    3. Hello Tunji, I see from the 1861 census that Lorraine found for you that Andrew was a 'drainer'. I have a Samuel Barrie from Kirkconnel DFS who was a drainer - and he never seems to be at home on census night either. By luck I found him in Dalmellington in 1851, along with one of his sons, also a drainer. His wife appears in Kirkconnel censuses but Samuel is obviously always away working elsewhere. I presume that most of the work was fairly temporary and so it was not worthwhile for the whole family to move house. Janet
