    1. [AYR] Occupation Dyster. Thomas Reid 1667 - 1733

    3. My ancestors, Thomas Reid and Sarah Findlay, are buried in the "Old Kirk" graveyard at Alloway with a prominent and unusual headstone that has on its obverse side the symbol of the "Dysters". Thomas is described as "Dyster of Craigie Mill". It would appear that his son William inherited the mill. I would appreciate advice on the Dyeing industry of that era and any possible info on the mill please. Location, how it worked, what fabrics etc I equate a mill as a place to grind grain, often powered by a water wheel. For dyeing would I be right to assume there was a water wheel but its use would have been to lift water from a stream for the dyeing process. Thanks Murray Reid New Zealand
