Was the position of a Member of Parliament a paid position c1830? If so would they also enjoys expenses? I imagine it would be quite onerous for a Scottish politician to both tavel and accomodate himself while the house was sitting in London. Murray Reid NZ
Murray MY UNDERSTANDING, is that they were not paid to be a member or for the travel, etc I know of a Dr John Boyd in Antrim in the 1840's - I think - who got into financial trouble because he a member of Parliament in London. However, I could not say when they did get paid - suspect the early 1900's - but look up Dr google under something like "When did House of Common Members get paid" and see what you get. It might even have it on the Common's website.
