Bruce and all The Old Keep has a Chapel in it. Third or fourth flour, with the living quarters and above the great hall. I assume that this was used in Catholic time before Knox or about 1560’s or 1570’s. I know that in the Leigh Church is a plaque to the fifth Lord Boyd form the 1590’s – I think. So at some time they must have gone to Church within Kilmarnock itself. There were also pews in the High Church, but I can’t recall if that was for Lord Boyd or the Earl of Kilmarnock. That is probably just coincidence, and even if inspired by Kirkdyke, it wasn't necessarily at the same location. Nonetheless, I figured I should share this, just in case you can make something from it. https://geographic.org/streetview/view.php?place=Kirkwall%20Place,%20Kilmarnock,%20Scotland I see that its not a long way from Dean (Kilmarnock) Castle, and have to wonder if there was a kirk associated with the castle. I guess that the BOYD land at the time extended somewhat beyond the castle? In that case, we have to hope that the location we are looking for has kept its name and shows up on later maps. I did look at a few of the older maps, and the 6 in OS of abt 1850, but no luck. I began looking at the 1850s town maps, but this is a bit tedious. (I am a map freak.) http://maps.nls.uk/townplans/kilmarnock.html I did persist for long enough to note the huge number of churches in the town - mind-boggling. With a name like that, I wondered if was close to a church (kirk), perhaps abutting the stone wall around the kirkyard. Of course, this location may not have been in the town. Its hard to be sure when the same name applies to a parish. My main focus is Wigtownshire, and there is often confusion with the word Wigtown - not only the town (Burgh in this case), and the parish, but lots of documents shorten the county name to Wigtown, and the context is not always obvious. Often, property names change when the land is acquired by a different estate. Spelling, (presumably also pronunciation), of some place names change enormously over time. Thus, you need to know in which time period to be looking at maps. Feel free to ask me any questions... I'm not sure all my Frews are in the right place.... however, that's the beauty of getting together with other family historians! Linda - do you live in OZ? Catherine - where do you live? I live in Leicestershire, England and do research every year in Scotland. My loveable rotwiller cousin originally from Stewarton and now Kilmarnock is a Frew. She and another cousin (living in Dalry) share a great grandmother. Re last message - it's one place not two! I checked the postcode for 23 Main Street and though the address is Kilmarnock it's actually in Craigie. So I think that's the answer. Mike - I though it may be not in Kilmarnock itself but quite nearby, in Craigie parish. The mentions of Kirkdyke suggest it's a house or an estate. Also it seems to be the older name for Craigie parish itself. However I do see references to "Kirkdyke in Kilmarnock" and "Kirkdyk of Kilmarnock" - these having different implications. And maybe - see below - there are actually two places named Kirkdyke that have an association with Kilmarnock (read right to the end of the message). I've come across various references to Kirkdyke, and an entry in Ordnance Survey books for the placename, available at Scotland's Places: https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/ordnance-survey-name-books/ayrshire-os-name-books-1855-1857/ayrshire-volume-18/6 "RED LION INN [Craigie] Red Lion Inn Red Lion Inn Red Lion Inn Kirkdyke Kirkdyke Robert Inglis James Watson David Brown Johnston's Co. [County] Map County Voters List 023 A two storey thatched building in bad repair. Porperty of Major Charles Hamilton Campbell of Netherplace Originally called Kirkdyke" Other references show the Kilmarnock Bonnetmakers having a meeting (possibly) there, and - interestingly - Burns giving a recitation, of his newly-composed 'Address to the Haggis' in the house of a Kilmarnock lawyer at 'Craigie Kirkdyke'. This at https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=THBzBAAAQBAJ&pg=PA49&lpg=PA49&dq=kirkdike+kilmarnock&source=bl&ots=WI6Mc-xzQV&sig=HeT0qv3dPK1UnAo3O8PJwDpT7Dc&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjOzc3wpcPYAhWpJMAKHSRsB4AQ6AEIRTAF#v=onepage&q=kirkdike%20kilmarnock&f=false And - AHA! - just found in an estate agent's page: There is a house at 232 Main Street, Kilmarnock, named Kirkdyke today. I've kept all the above about Craigie Kirkdyke in the post, though, as it seems interesting. Hello Catherine, Thank you so much for taking the time to type these Frew members that you are researching. I will take time in the next few days to go over the names and dates. At first glance, it appears many of these members are from the William Frew/Elizabeth Irvine married Irvine m. 1847 With sons Francis Frew/ Margaret Hannah m 1774 and family members as well as John Frew/Janet Galt m 1772 Irvine and family. I think I recall that you had made mention of A Galt member in a previous post. Helen Frew of this line married John Galt 1812 in Kilwinning, he was the son of Gabriel Galt and Margaret Cunningham. In any event, if this is Frew line you are researching possibly we can share information we have been able to gather. Thank you Kay. I will add this to the beginning of the Family Chapter for the material form Burke’s Commoners. I had ASSUMED that Kikdyk was an Estate under the tradition of naming Estates, but what you are saying it could be an house name within Kilmarnock village. (Although it might have been a small Estate within the Boyd lands around Kilmarnock. These run, according to a 1604 Clan Map from SW of Kilmarnock to the NE and were some 2000 acres. But I have yet to learn where it might have fitted on a modern map. These Boyd lands – since 1306, 1308 or 1316 depending on what source your have – in the late 1700’s were owned by the Duke of Portland. Another task to ask the Burns Centre when I go in 2019.) Place names are often descriptive and a useful means of distinguishing something or someone from another. On town maps you will find names like Town Head or Town End, Brae Head or Brae Side and Craig/Crag Head or Crag Side. The brae being a steep slope and the crag or craig being a rocky outcrop that sticks out (as in Salisbury Crags in Edinburgh). I grew up in a village that had a Dykeside and a Back Dykes. A dyke in Scots is a stone wall. So I would look for where the stone wall boundary around the kirk/church was at that time. According to the congregation’s own history of the Laigh Kirk: “Around the 13th century a church was erected on or near the site of the present building. It was known as the Low (or Laigh) Church, a reference to its geographical position in that it stood in the low part of the town or hamlet as Kilmarnock then was. ... This then was the first church in Kilmarnock, and following the reformation in 1560, the Laigh was the first and only Church of Scotland in the town. By 1731, as Kilmarnock flourished and the population increased, Laigh Kirk became too small to accommodate all the worshippers and in that year another Church (the Old High) was born.” http://www.nlk.church/about/history.php?p=80 So, I am suggesting it is a strong possibility Kirkdyke is the boundary of the Laigh Kirk. I have had a look at some of the town maps of Kilmarnock available from the National Library of Scotland (links below). I am proposing that Kirk Lane (1819 map) or Low Church Lane (1857 map) may have been previously known as Kirkdyke. An alternative candidate is College Wynd (1857) which is unnamed on the 1819 map. (The 1832 Great Reform Act of Kilmarnock only has a few main street names on it.) The John Wood map of 1819 is the earliest town plan of Kilmarnock in the NLS’s digitised collection. http://maps.nls.uk/view/74400042 It is a really interesting one for family history researchers because it has proprietors names on it (presumably the map making was funded by sales to these proprietors). A feature of this map is the number of fashionable street names and streets named after people (e.g. Regent Street, Nelson Street, Portland Street and Waterloo Street). These are likely to have had other names previously and the map may have had the purpose of popularising the new names. There’s also a nice bit of Georgian town planning around Glencairn Square. I’m intrigued that Mr Thomas Morton had an observatory (see link listed below for who he was). All of these reflect that Kilmarnock grew rapidly and its urban form changed markedly from 1700 onwards (see Strawhorn’s history below). A new thoroughfare was carved right through the town as part of improvements made in 1800-1810 (presumably for the benefit of coach and horses). The Ordnance Survey map sheet with the Low Church/Laigh Kirk on is Kilmarnock 1857 - XVIII.13.9 http://maps.nls.uk/view/74416040 (The map makers tended to anglicise Scots.) The whole map covers 15 sheets and is a fabulously detailed picture of town life at that time. According to "The Calendar with the Table of Lessons" in a copy of the "Book of Common Prayer" St Andrew's day is the 30th of November. This date would be the same anywhere in the world where the Church of England was the main/established religion, and I also suspect within the Roman Catholic church's sphere. I'm not sure what the original poster meant; was he asking if it's a public holiday in Australia? Obviously St Andrew's Day is the same date everywhere, but it's only a public holiday in Scotland (and that only by a recent act of the Scottish Parliament) and, apparently, a province holiday in Labrador and Newfoundland. England doesn't even have St George's Day as a public holiday, nor Wales St David's, although there is a movement to change that, and Labour have suggested having four new public holidays for each of the British patron saints (the Republic of Ireland already has St Patrick's as a public holiday). St Andrew's Day is not celebrated in Australia. It is shown on our calendars just as St Andrews Day (SCT) ie celebrated in Scotland. Same as St Georges, St Davids, St Patricks Days - may be celebrated in local communities ie the Irish but not on any official basis.
