    1. [AYR] The family of James Boyd and Jonet Bankhead of Busbie, in Kilmaurs Parish, Ayrshire in 1666.

    3. The family of James Boyd and Jonet Bankhead of Busbie, in Kilmaurs Parish, Ayrshire in 1666. In the website www.electricscotland.com/history/records/scottishrecordso07scotuoft.pdf, it outlines the book Scottish Record Society, The Commissariot Record of Glasgow. Register of Testaments, 1547 – 1800, ed Francis J. Grant, 1901, page 31 “Bankhead, Jonet, spouse to James Boyd, in Busbie, par. of Kilmaris* 18 May 1666” (*) I assume Kilmaris is the modern parish of Kilmaurs. This is the first time, that I can recall, of seeing a Boyd family given at this location of Busbie. This would place, Busbie about four kms west of Kilmarnock, but in what I estimate would have been the Cunningham Lands. And it is about one km NW of Crosshouse. By the term “in” normally means that this James Boyd was living on this Estate of Busbie but did not own or lease it. It would also suggest that as his wife – Jonet Bankhead – has had a Testament before the Court on 18 May 1666, that she and James had “some wealth”. But this record does not indicate how much wealth they had. You will need to go to the Court records to find this out. This record tells us that Jonet Bankhead has died prior to 18 May 1666 and that James was still living at that time. Unfortunately, it does not tell us anything more about their family. If this is your family, I would like to hear from you please to find out their migration path and their known descendants. Mike Boyd Chairman Historical Committee, HBS

    1. [AYR] Re: Testaments and SRO publications
    2. Louise Gibson
    3. Further to Mike's question, it is well worth noting that the Indexes on ScotlandsPeople, and their associated documents, are not complete for either Testament Testamentars (TT) or Testament Datives (TD). ScotlandsPeople does not tell you which registers, and for which years, are missing/lost. An Example: Robert Purves had married Margaret Dowglas in 1616 in Edinburgh. We have baptisms for 8 of their 9 children, all in Edinburgh, and Robert was made burgess and guild brethren of Edinburgh on the 3rd of May 1626. In searching for the deaths of both Robert and Margaret, many moons ago, and before Scotlands People was available, I accessed the Scottish Record Society (SRS) publication, Old Series (OS) No.2 "Commissariot Record of Edinburgh, Register of Testaments 1601-1700". Using ScotlandsPeople to search for evidence of a testament for either or both Robert and Margaret, there are no results, using all variations I could possibly use for their names. HOWEVER Searching the SRS book of Edinburgh Testaments, p 328 (available in PDF format online at the Internet Archive) it records both Robert Purves and Margaret Douglas, together, (as opposed to referencing the other spouse). There is a date of the 23 September 1629 recorded against their names, BUT the date is in italics, meaning there is no surviving TT or TD, but there is an entry in the Minute Book for the Commissariot of Edinburgh in relation to this TT or TD, with this date, thus giving us a date the TT or TD was proved. What is unusual for this TT or TD is that it refers to the deaths of both Robert and Margaret. Also, a search of the Retours revealed William, their 4th child, was served heir to his father 15 July 1630, at the age of 6 years. The SRS publications adds the qualification of the missing registers, and that they used information in the Minute Books when compiling their publication, and in the case of Edinburgh Testaments 1601-1700, the registers for 12 August 1607 -1 June 1608 and 10 January 1629 - 30 November 1630 are the two registers missing for those 99 years. The entry for Robert and Margaret is ONLY recorded in the Minute book, and thus ONLY appears in the SRS publication, as ScotlandsPeople do not have the records from the Minute Book. THE SRS publications lists can be perused at: <http://www.scottishrecordsociety.org.uk> Scottish Record Society is still "publishing calendars, indexes and texts of historical records". Their 1st volume was published in 1897, and this year, 2018, they have published an electronic edition of the book "The Heads of Religious Houses in Scotland from Twelfth to Sixteenth Centuries". I had to borrow that tome on Inter Library loan last year. ScotlandsPeople is the best place to start for all TT and TD, and remember to search for the women, single and married with their maiden surnames as well as with their husband's surname. 2. Jenny Blain
    3. OK, as my 'test' message got through - here's the one I sent earlier, again :) Loretta and others - I find Testaments Dative are often quite useful. Indeed they don't include a 'latterwill', because there wasn't one, but they will name the executors and the person who drew up the Inventar, and state who the Cautioner is. Also, often the lists of debts owing to and by the deceased person will give a kind of social network within the area. The writing and language of 16th, 17th and 18th century testaments can be tricky - you may need to use both the Scottish Handwriting help available via Scotland's People 'help', and the Dictionary of the Scottish Language (dsl.ac.uk). Also if you drop me a line I can help, time permitting. I've developed a bit of skill in this and enjoy the challenge! Jenny On 25/06/2018 01:22, LORETTA LAYMAN wrote: > ... > The SRS published register of testaments lists Adam Auld with the date 27 May 1686. I went to the scotlandspeople website and searched for it using just the first and last names and the year. The result matches the name and date exactly, the date being I believe the date the document or documents were registered. In this case, there is a testament dative and an inventory. The testament dative of course does not include a will and probably isn't worth paying to see. At the same time, though, the site does include some potentially helpful information. In this case, the description included as part of the free search says that Adam Auld was "in Parkhill" and also mentions "Jonet Mitchell, his spouse, parish of Tarbolton". >

    3. Hi all - this is just to see if posts are getting through. I earlier posted in reply to Loretta's on 'Testaments', but it hasn't shown up... So, just a check here. ( I find Testaments Dative can be quite useful, even though there is no 'will'.) Jenny

    1. [AYR] Re: ROBERT WALLACE
    2. Bruce McDowall
    3. Hi Carol, Three sources I would recommend that you pursue: 1. The Mauchline parish registers - LDS film no 1041395. It used to be that you could order such films into an LDS family history centre. Now access is digital images online, but you you need to be at a FHC or agency to get access. What I would do is to trawl through the film to see what other mentions there may be of the relevant people and locations. (I've done that in my own research.) 2. Kirk Session records. I just had a look at the NRS catalogue and it seems they don't hold these records for Mauchline, but the Burns Centre in Kilmarnoch do. That's difficult for us in Oz, but it depends on how important it is to you, as there is always the option of engaging a professional researcher to look up such records. (I've done that also, but not for Mauchline parish.) In cases of illegitimate births, the parties were called before the Kirk Session (on 3 occasions) and grilled. Sometimes the Session Clerk kept detailed minutes relating to this grilling, and these can give information you would not get from any other source. This may not give you the names of parents of your Robert WALLACE, but it may give some good leads. 3. Monumental Inscriptions sometimes contain information not recorded elsewhere, but you have to be lucky, especially going back prior to 1800. Lots of families couldn't afford headstones, and lots of old ones have suffered the effects of weather and vandals. You also need to narrow down where to look for them, but you may be able to establish that from birth and marriage records in the OPRs. 3. Carol You will need to provide more details on what you know. Did Sara die after 1855, so what does her death certificate say, etc 2ndly, have you joined the Wallace@rootsweb.com net list? And it may also be worth contact the Wallace Society in both North America and Scotland to see if your query can't be put into the magazine. 3. A very interesting article and very nice examples, than you. I think Fancy Box Maker likely covered many styles of boxes including MauchlineWare and MauchlineWare cover many goods as well as boxes. I have a Fancy Box Maker in Argyll Street, Glasgow in the 1860s / 70s who employed just four people so quite small. I have wondered if he might have been upstairs in The Argyll Arcade, Glasgow but hard to be sure by the street number. > On 25 Jun 2018, at 3:38 am, Kay Williams <williams_kay@outlook.com> wrote: > > Hi folks, > > There's an article on specialist box making in Ayrshire on this NTS web page: > http://www.ntsayrshire.org.uk/Meet-MauchlineWare.html > > Kay > Edinburgh > ________________________________ > From: ayrshire-request@rootsweb.com <ayrshire-request@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, June 24, 2018 6:22:53 PM > To: ayrshire@rootsweb.com > Subject: AYRSHIRE Digest, Vol 13, Issue 70 > > Send AYRSHIRE mailing list submissions to > ayrshire@rootsweb.com > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via email, send a message with subject or > body 'help' to > ayrshire-request@rootsweb.com > > You can reach the person managing the list at > ayrshire-owner@rootsweb.com > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of AYRSHIRE digest..." > > Today's Topics: > > 1. 3. You're welcome Mike. Unfortunately, registers of testaments published by the Scottish Record Society do not tell you which type of testament (dative or testamentary) and thus does not tell you if there's a will. However, you can take an entry from the book and search for the testament free of charge at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and their entries do tell you exactly what type of documents were registered. That will tell you whether or not it's worth paying to see an image of the document(s). Here's an example ... You do have to register to use the site, but it's well worth it as the free searches often turn up some very helpful info. 3. Thank you Kay and Loretta. So, if I have got this right,it is the Court case after the person has died and those records of the Court case are in another document. This list does not seem to tell us if they left a will or not. I found this under the website - [PDF]Scottish Record Society. [Publications] - Electric Scotland www.electricscotland.com/history/records/scottishrecordso07scotuoft.pdf And for me it tells me many more places that Boyds lived in in Ayrshire and areas around Glasgow – including their occupation and Estate location. (So I will now have more work to do to process this book into queries.)
