Hi Bill, I have that however my cousin felt that Agnes m. another Thomas Shields because of our Thomas m. Jean Gillies (1797-1855) first and then Jane Cairns second. The dates don't jive with that of Agnes and Jean. At first I thought that they might have been Mormons as some of my earlier Shields were. John Shields b. 1805 Renfrew was baptised as LDS in 1841 - at age 36 and then went to Ireland for two years as a missionary but ended up dying in Salt Lake city in 1887. However, this part of my tree has ALWAYS troubled me because Elizabeth Gillies (1760-1860) is supposed to be my 6th great grandmother but according to Ancestry she is my 4th great grandmother. My immediate cousins and I all have Gillies in our names and believe we were named after her as she is supposed to be first cousin to Robbie Burns. Hi Bill, I have been researching my Shields family for near on 15 years. I notice that you have an Agnes Blair m. to Thomas Shields b. abt 1798. Do you have a source for this Thomas marrying Agnes? Thomas is my 3rd great grandfather and a second great grandfather to my 3rd cousin in Renfrew. We had an email discussion just the other day about Agnes. We know that Thomas m. an Jean Gillies and also Jane Cairns. However, we concluded that there must be another Thomas Shields who m. Agnes. The Burns Centre has changed from years ago because of staff cuts and reduced hours. I think they may be closed on Mondays. Also, where before we could eat in the break room now that isn't allowed. However, they do have a huge collection of Burns material including Burns Chronicles. I believe there is an archivist at the Burns Museum in Alloway... I could call on your behalf to set up an appointment. I got there too late in the day when there two years ago. They also have a shop full of Burns stuff. If you can squeeze it in you might want to go to The Portal in Irvine which is the new home for documents formerly placed in South Ayrshire. Heather Mendizes? Is really helpful. I can put all of these in a word document later on this evening and include addresses, opening times, etc. If it would help? Murray Was one of the places that your tried to contact, was it the Local Studies Library at the Carnegie Library in Ayr (town).? That is the sort of details they should know? The other people too contact are the Ayrshire Archives - sorry do not know their Email address - but they are only opened limited days during the week. It would be best to contact them before you leave New Zealand. I am not sure if they would hold the ownership or if it had to be licenced etc. Mike Boyd -----Original Message----- From: Murray Reid Sent: Thursday, August 30, 2018 2:01 PM To: AYRSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [AYR] Craig Mill Alloway Listers will be aware that for some time I have been looking for this mill and attempting to find out if any sign of it exists today. The answer is that it does exist and is only a km or so upstream on the "Doon" from Alloway. The mill may date from before 1700 so I would have thought it would have some historic significance. By coincidence I was planning to make a trip to Scotland and will be in Alloway and Maybole for a few days from the 20th of September. Starting in early July I emailed various organisations seeking general history on "Waulking Mills" and "Craig Mill" in particular and am astonished that not one of the organisations has favoured me with a reply. I would have thought that if someone is prepared to travel around the world to visit a historic site the respectful, and professional, thing to do would at the very least be an acknowledgement. In a similar vein I have a strong belief that a 1st cousin, 5 times removed (Thomas Reid (b1744)) may have been the model for "Tam" in Robbie Burns famous poem. Seeking info I wrote to the "Burns Museum" in Alloway, but am yet to receive a reply. I have been doing genealogy research in many parts of the world for close on thirty years and have always had my queries treated seriously and acted on promptly. This lack of response has come as a real surprise to me, and wonder if others have had similar experiences. My website has been down since last May. I have activated it today and I’m presently uploading my database. It will probably fully operational late this evening (Wednesday). Names of interest in Ayrshire are: Davidson, Allison, Bryden, Piper, Clark, McClearie, Craid, Dougall, Mckelvie, McMillan, Manson, Smith, Stewart and many more. You can reach the website at: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.williamhdavidson.com&d=DwIFaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=s5xK7ELKNd7KGtt7vYMJnRxn4W6Uq6VFZPGtQ70kG2w&m=Mff-GTnCikgWIQAWUmQVTYDOS7woCYDQhbd1PVuR9i8&s=MiTumU9tQujo8QZrCbqus0knj7bxuWXOL833qqkBT2g&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.williamhdavidson.com_&d=DwIFaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=s5xK7ELKNd7KGtt7vYMJnRxn4W6Uq6VFZPGtQ70kG2w&m=Mff-GTnCikgWIQAWUmQVTYDOS7woCYDQhbd1PVuR9i8&s=wnpr39tncVSA6hUCys-ORpx_ZQhjCzx10JbhQ0Qbh8c&e=> For those of you who had visited it before, note there is the letter “h” between the names. From: Mike Boyd Sent: Sunday, August 19, 2018 12:43 PM To: boyd@rootsweb.com Subject: Is "Boyard" the French spelling of BOYD? I am just going through a website that shows “BOYARD” as the French version for spelling Boyd. Does anyone know if that is correct or not? I do know that there were BOYD at Le Rochelle, SW France and some of those sons went to South Carolina in the 1680’s. Then early 1700’s went to Dublin and a little later went to London, where John Boyd became involved with the East India Company and Slavary in Africa and in the 1760’s he became a Baronet of Danson Hall, Kent. So it appear that this Boyd family, whom I think is a part of the Boyds of Portincross, Ayrshire, but have not yet been able to prove that. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
This area of research might be useful for those Boyd not on the Boyd@rootsweb.com net list Mike Boyd From: Mike Boyd Sent: Wednesday, August 15, 2018 3:56 PM To: boyd@rootsweb.com Subject: DNA of Boyds form the Scottish Borders Given my previous email on the location of Caverton/Cavertoun, Roxburghshire – I estimate that while this location is first mentioned in April 1467, it may come form the Estate of through the marriage of Alice Gifford, the second daughter and co-heir of Hugh Gifford of Yester, who married Sir Thomas Boyd, third Feudal Baron of Kilmarnock. Scots Peerage, does not provide any date of this marriage, but it would appear to be about 1350 to 1370. I am assuming that “a” Boyd family run this Estate for the Head of the Clan or it may have been a series of over the generations until this Estate would have been lost to the Boyds in 1469. While we know that there a quite a number of Boyd families that are recorded in the Scottish Border in the last 2 hundred years, but we do not know their origins or linkages. So while I was writing up the family Chapter on Caverton, Roxburghshire, the thought occurred to me as if these Boyd’s DNA maybe linked. So has anyone compared the DNA for these Scottish Border Boyd families? Thank you Mike Boyd # 423
