Ruth I am not quite sure how many McCredie families there might be in Ayrshire - but this is one who married a Jean Boyd of Pitcon, Ayrshire in t the early 1700's 7/358 BOYD OF MACREDIE FAMILY OF PERCETON, AYRSHIRE (FOL. E, # 14) This is part of the Boyds of Pitcon. See version three of chapter 15 which is based on History of the Counties of Ayr and Wigton, Vol. III - Cunninghame, Part 1, James Paterson, 1866, p 188-189 Perceton, Ayrshire, now seems to be an eastern suburb of Irvine to its NE and between the B 769 Road and the Annick Water - about 3kms from Irvine. With Perceton House also marked in this suburban area. While Drummuir is about 7 1/2 kms to the SE of Perceton and would appear to still be an farm. In 1720 Sir Robert Barclay sold the nine pound land of old extent of Perceton, the fourty-six shilling lands of Drummuir, and the twenty shilling land of Righouse to Andrew Macredie, Provost of Stranraer. (Jean Boyd's father-in-law.) MacCreadie could or might be spelt as McCreadie. P1 Thomas Boyd, b / /165x ( ), d / /170x ( ), bu , m / /167x (church, town, county, etc), Agnes Scott, dau of and (nee ) Scott, b / /165x ( ), d / /17xx ( ), bu , and had issue:- [Lived: ] Q2? Jean Boyd, b / /170x ( ), d 27?/2/1770 ( ), bu , m / /172x (church, town county, etc), Andrew Macredie, son of Andrew Macredie of Perceton, b / /170x ( ), d /9/1764, ( ), bu , and had issue:- [Lived: ] - See Chapter 15, It does not state when Andrew succeeded his father Andrew Macredie. But I have no McKissock marriage in their descendants. But that may mean that Branch was not recorded in this family or it come from a separate McCredie family. This is to thank the many people on this list who have provided me with good advice, leads, etc., in my search.. I have not given up but what I found so far in searching OPRs on ScotlandsPeople is not encouraging. I have, however, put my case to the family history centre in Kilmarnock and hope to have my answer after the week end. What did surprise me was finding that I had put pretty much the same question to RootsChat fifteen years ago when I first started my search. I had completely forgotten probably because my query had led nowhere. Again my thanks, and good hunting, Nick
Kay and other list members The books that I have seen at each of the three Ayrshire Local Studies Libraries are A4 page size, so appear to be separate set of publications. Hopefully through these sites that Kay has supplied and those held by the Local Studies Libraries can help to supply some of the data that Nick is searching for. [And be of benefit to others as well.] And do not forget to check f the Council may have a listing as well, or visit the Council office during your trip Mike Boyd -----Original Message----- From: Kay Williams Sent: Sunday, September 16, 2018 8:13 AM To: ayrshire@rootsweb.com Subject: [AYR] Monumental Inscriptions Hi folks, I notice there has been some discussion of projects which have transcribed Monumental Inscriptions (MIs). Debbie and Nick All three Local Studies Libraries in Ayrshire have these books and the MI's then available to record. They also have a map of where each of those grave are in that Cemetery. If you are still in Ayrshire and have not gone home, you should be able to find them on the shelves. In about 2009 or 2010, I was in Irvine and found a Boyd Hunter grave, but when I went to Parish Church to find it, I could not. So the staff, in this case, actually rang the Council and they had some other maps and found the grave site. It had an inch or two of grass over this flat gravestone. The two workers cleared the grass of it. So I got my photo of it. You may also need to check if Churchyard is now "controlled" by the Council or not as well. Nick If these sources do not work, try the Local Studies Library at Ayr (Town) - South Ayrshire Council website - in the 1980's as a make work program, the Ayrshire Councils (ad I assume other Scottish Counties) got the unemployed to record the grave inscriptions and map all the Churchyards and Cemeteries. So they should have what records are available for "Crosbie Kirkyard near Troon" to tell you if this is where he is buried - especially now that his date of death is "known". Another said he died in 1840 and a third gave this said this John Wilson died on 17 April 1840 at Kilmarnock (This might allow to you see if there is any OPR records or death certificate or Newspaper story of that date or during the week after.) Nick It got the better of me and I have just googled "John Wilson , surveyor, Kilmarnock to Troon Railway" One site said "the surveyor John Wilson (who eventually came to manage both the railway and Troon Harbour, and is buried at Crosbie Kirkyard near Troon)" But did not give a date, but this would mean that you will have to contact the South Ayrshire Library at Ayr Town for details. Another said he died in 1840 and a third gave this said this John Wilson died on 17 April 1840 at Kilmarnock (This might allow to you see if there is any OPR records or death certificate or Newspaper story of that date or during the week after.) So it looks like there more information on him. Nick, I'm sure that you have looked at enough.Wikipedia.org/wiki/kilmsrnock_and-Troon-Railway#The_first_locomotive_in_Scotland. While I know that we shouldn't rely on Wikipedia the author does give a lot of references. One talks about the Kilmarnock & Troon Railway minutes - which has something to do with the Scottish Records. I have found my own Shields family originally from Stewarton in Cumnock, Ayrshire. This was a surprise. Some Shields also came from Troon and are also found in Cumnock. During the early 20th century mining continued to play an important part in the economic growth of the district with Baird & Dalmellington Ltd. being the main employers. Following on with this you would need coal for the trains and iron for the tracks. I will probably go the Burns Centre at some point as am here from England as I do every year. I will see if I can find something for you. Could you try to go thru the Kilmarnock & Troon RR files? ( even if the company changed their name ) I see several pictures on GOOGLE of this train. Surely there must be more information in the Ayrshire Research place you have been communicating with. . Perhaps you can get in the back door! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ruth
Nick First task is to get one of your children to work for Air Canada. Do they fly from Vancouver to Glasgow, Scotland? That will get you cheap flights a few times a year. Before you contact the Burns Centre at Kilmarnock - they will only now do 30 minutes of research free, as I understand it - I am sure that the list can narrow down your John Wilson's from 615 to s much smaller number. So you know that - 1) he dies about 1820; 2) he was a Surveyor on the building of the Kilmarnock & Troon Railway (so that "should" mean that the Burns Centre have some information on him in either one of their Folders or in one of the published histories of Kilmarnock. So ask then this question first to see what data that might bring.) 3) Do you know his wife and her details? 4) You will know one of their children - your ancestor - so what details do you have on this son - birth and death and there location, where buried, wife etc 5) Do you know any of the other siblings names and details? While your John Wilson was not of the landed class, being a Surveyor, I assume he is in the upper middle class and would have left some foot prints. Although he could have had his own home, so that may mean that he could vote. Certainly much more than a farm labourer would have. Your other area of information is to go to rootsweb.com named site and look for the name Wilson and also join that site to parallel post information, so that you can find 4th, 5th or 6th cousins reserching another child of John Wilson or even his father's family. So by Christmas, I am sure that both net lists can get this list of 615 down to a number that can be looked at more closely. Sadly I seem to have ended up generally speaking as a receiver rather then giver of valuable information. I have scads to share but have found very few people on line who are in need of what I have to share. I take this opportunity to thank those who guided me towards the Burns Historical Centre (sic). I see they offer wonderful research facilities to visitors but I am a long, long way away on the west coast of Canada. I shall write instead in the hope I can link up with a local researcher. With 615 John Wilsons born during that 20 year period I am not too optimistic about my chances of success. "If thou never ask a question, you will not find a connection" In my local area I am involved with two Genealogical Societies - one being the parent of the other - and I never stop being amassed that people do not know about the rootsweb.com system and the very large number of people that think that people can read minds to answer their unspoken questions. If you have a brick wall, "It is you that needs to ask the question/s" and not wait for someone that might post something about your family. I assume that there are several hundreds of people (or thousands) on this list. So when you post you are taking out a 'ad" in the "London Times" or "New york times" and telling others "I have a problem" or "I need some help to find some information" as Nick is currently doing with his family. I am on several net list, but this one is one of the better lists in people helping others to build their "onion" or Family Tree. I assume Debbie's Mr Wilson did not go to India!! I hope that Kilmarnock has had some rain, it would be a great pity to see if brown like Australia. At present we have some 60% of Queensland that is in drought and the whole of New South Wales. With western parts of Queensland not having seen any rain for about 6 or so years.
