The Irvine Relief Church session minutes from 1777-1831 include a record of marriages and baptisms [CH3/409/1]. Those from 1831-1855 include baptisms [CH3/409/2]. If it was the Relief Church school it is possible the minutes include some mention of the school and also possible that the school master was the clerk to the session. The Relief Church was founded in 1761 and is associated with Thomas Gillespie's opposition to patronage (the right of lay patrons, usually landowners, to nominate the local established Church of Scotland parish minister). Take another look at your ancestor's writings. In what context does 'poor relief' appear? Poor relief before 1845/6 Acts (following the 1844 Royal Commission on the Scottish poor laws) was administered at parish church level as a form of 'collective support'(parish collections and donations from landowners). By the 1830s this had been put under pressure by the economic and social transformation from a rural to urban society and no longer worked. There is an Andrew Arnot born 02/12/1809 in Irvine to James Arnot and Barbara Reid. Their marriage is recorded twice - In Colyton parish on 2/7/1809 and in St Quivox on 1/7/1809. Given the closeness in dates between marriage and birth, the family may have adjusted Andrew's birth date. Hope that helps, Ian Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have been researching my Arnot family for a long time and have finally finished the Australian family history. My problem now is that I do not have the connections to Irvine in Scotland which is where they came from. I know a little bit about where they were and what they did, but I cannot find any information about their families. They are as follows. Andrew Arnot Born 1815 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. He married Agnes Parker Russell on July 2nd, 1844. Agnes Parker Russell, born approx 1821 is the daughter of Alexander Hamilton Russell, Master Shoemaker of Halfway St. He was born approx 1788 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. Her mother was Margaret Murdoch, born approx 1793, also at Irvine. They married in October 21st 1815. I believe they left Scotland around 1848, but really don't know how, or where to or on what ship, or if indeed they really did leave. Alexander is said to have had two brothers who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. other than that, i know nothing of either of their families. They arrived in Australia in 1849 in early April on the "Hydaspes" with two of their children. Margaret, born 1845 and David, born 1846. I do know, from family writings that Andrew was a teacher at the Poor Relief School, and that his children were baptised at the Poor Relief Church in Irvine. His father ws said to be a cooper and dancing teacher. I am really stuck with finding information and would appreciate it if someone could kindly help. At a few minuites before 2 pm Australian East time, Jessica Watson who will turn 17 years old next Tuesday, took some 210 days to sail around the world by herself, unassisted. When she returned to Sydney Harbour today, there were more boats than for a New Years fireworks display. Even our Prime Minister and the NSW Premier greated her at the Opera House Steps when she came ashore. She is said to be the youngest person to sail solo around the world. Joanne, I am researching the family of Archibald C. ROY. In the 1901 census he is shown as being born in 1900 at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. His parents are Alexander (1860) and Helen (1869) Roy are living at 6 Woodstock Place, Kilmarnock along with children James, Mary C, Alexander and Annie in addition to Archibald. Alexander and Helen were both born in Dalmelington, Ayrshire. I found Alexander and Helen in the 1891 census with James and Mary living at 159 Same House Coylton, Ayrshire. Archibald immigrated to the US in 1923. According to Archibald's daughter Helen's surname was Campbell as is Archibald's middle name. I was hoping to find birth and/or marriage record for Alexander and Helen. I would appreciate any help available. Thanks Bruce Heath, Ohio Bruce, Welcome to the list. I have a marriage record for William Shields and Elisabeth Wyllie, Stewarton, Ayr, Scotland 9/27/1824. I also have the birth record for their son William Shields b. Feb. 27, 1826. I am now trying to find the names of the parents of William Shields Sr. and Elisabeth Wyllie from Stewarton. I believe the parents died when the son was in his early years as other family members call him an orphaned child. Thank you. Elaine Sharp Sacramento CA
