The obituary for Alexander Wilson GILLESPIE, dated March 1925 in Schenectady, New York, states he was a life member of the Masonic Chapters of Masons in Ayr, Scotland. I would like to know whether other family members were Masons as well. Thanks - Joan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello Ayrshire List, I am new to this board. Recently finding connections to the Gemmell family from Muirkirk, this is my first link to Ayrshire, most of my family hailing from East Scotland. I was hoping to request a look up for Gemmells dying/interred in Muirkirk pre-1855 , more specifically John Gemmell and wife Agnes Wilson who married circa 1787 and had their last child in 1808. I checked and found out that the Muirkirk OPR deaths only go up until 1800, so while the couple would have died after that, there may have been children of them who died before. There could also be a grave that mentions the couple. I hope someone can help me, Cheers

I discovered that they belonged to a completely separate tree. These Barneses lived in the same areas as mine, and even did similar jobs, but I have never been able to make a connection. I am in contact with one of their descendants. Annie Gourlay is also a red herring. John Barnes was born in 1806 in County Down, Ireland. He married Elisabeth McCandlesh (various spellings) on 10th Jan 1825 in Ballantrae. In 1841, they were living in Lower Church Lane, Kilmarnock, with their 6 children, including your Joseph, but without my Samuel. In 1851, John is in Crompton Street Riccarton, but is now married to Janet (nee REID). Only their sons Robert & Joseph are with them.In 1861, John and Janet are in Sandbed Street, Kilmarnock. They had been married in Kilmarnock on 15th Aug 1845. I haven't been able to find any evidence of Elizabeth Candlishs' death, but have it logged as between 1841-1845. The other record I have is his Poor relief application from 1865. He has asthma, has "deserted his wife". He is admitted to the poorhouse at his own request and dies there on 8th July 1868. In this document, he states that his son John is "in America". I have had a look at some American records, but have not found a definitive John. You probably already know much of this. It will probably be easier if we contact each other directly. I saw a posting that you did maybe 10 years ago, and hoped that we could connect. I would love any information that you would have on John Barnes and Elizabeth Candlish. We always had a sneaky suspicion that we were headed in the wrong direction as we had Annie Gourlay as Joseph's mother and no other information on her. Being a relative of Samuel, are you still in Scotland than? We are in Utah, that is where John, Joseph's son immigrated to. In fact, my husband is named John Barnes, after his ggrandfather, John Barnes of 1870. We would love to make a trip to Scotland in the next year or so, however, it would be great to spend time seeing the countryside and meeting the relatives instead of keeping our noses in books looking for ancestors. Thank goodness for scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It has been worth the money to me to see the actual records, and especially to find out that Josephs mother was Elizabeth and not Annie Gourlay. ! Anyway, it is great to make contact, and I look forward to sharing information with you also. Rayleen Barnes Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He came to Utah in 1910. His father is Joseph Barnes. It was recorded in the family records some 30 years ago that Annie Gourlay and John Barnes were his parents. However, recently I discovered from Joseph's Death Certificate that his mother is Elizabeth Candlish, from Ireland. So now, it looks like we have been following the wrong family line because we thought that his father, John Barnes, b.1811, son of John Barnes and Elizabeth Tait, was his father. However, John Barnes of 1811 is married to Hellen Boyd. If you have any clues that would be great. Rayleen Barnes Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have been working on their history for a long time, and although I have never been able to go further back than John & Elizabeth, I have managed to fill in some of the detail. Your Joseph has always been interesting, as he married three times, and the records are very inconsistent about his place of birth. I would be very glad to share information, and look forward to hearing from you. Susan Sherman Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
