    3. I am not a member of Ancestry so can't sen this back to that group However in the Fenwich Churchyard book there are two Howatt graves - # 116, MIGHT BE THE FATHER but more likely the grandfather of this couple and in grave #114,it would appear to be the father of grave # 116 FROM THE AGES ON THE GRAVES. However, this will not prove the link but only give you some other possible avenues of research. 3. Hello Tunji, I see from the 1861 census that Lorraine found for you that Andrew was a 'drainer'. I have a Samuel Barrie from Kirkconnel DFS who was a drainer - and he never seems to be at home on census night either. By luck I found him in Dalmellington in 1851, along with one of his sons, also a drainer. His wife appears in Kirkconnel censuses but Samuel is obviously always away working elsewhere. I presume that most of the work was fairly temporary and so it was not worthwhile for the whole family to move house. Janet

    3. Tunji What spell variation have you looked under in the Census? You may have to either know or find out from a latter census what occupation that Andrew Gemmell was. For Example, if he was a farm worker, he may have been working out of area or if he was a servant to the estate owner, have been in Glasgow or Edinburgh with him when the Census taker came by. Or a 1000 other reasons. 3. Thanks for the 1861 transcription Lorraine, and thanks Mike for your suggestions. I took your advice about considering his occupation, and searched FreeCen for an Andrew Gemmell with the occupation of Drainer/Land Drainer in the 1841 census. There was only one match, an Andrew Gemmell in a house full of Drainers in Ross & Cromarty. He is born out of the county, and his age matches, I'm quite confident he's my man. Unfortunately, I couldn't find him in 1851 in the same way. Then again, the 1851 FreeCen census is much less complete. Cheers, Tunji Belgium

    3. Hi Shanna formal adoptions in Scotland wernt legalised until about 1930. There maybe something recorded in the Kirk session minutes of the Dunoon church, these may have been filmed by the LDS and you can order in the film at the nearest Family History centre and go and look at it. In the census what was Alexanders relationship to the head of house ? maybe the Graingers were distant relatives. Have you looked on Scotlands People for any of this information ? 3. Hello, I am looking into a family and would like to request a census look up for 1841, 1851 and 1861. The family is: Andrew Gemmell m. Marion Broatfoot 1814 Muirkirk. To help find the family, here are their children, all born in Muirkirk: -John b. 1814 -Christian b. 1817 -Robert b. 1819 -Andrew b. 1822 -Alison b. 1824 -David b. 1827 -William b. 1829 -Thomas b. 1832 -Margaret Gibson b. 1834 Father Andrew died in Muirkirk in 1866 so I suspect he'll be in Muirkirk on all three censues. Thanks and regards, Tunji Lees
