I'll contact these FHS and see if they know about my ancestor, or if I can become a member and learn more.  Hopefully they'll accept air mail, as I've had trouble with online transactions and would like to try paying with international coupons.  Regards Richard

    3. Dear listers I am researching a close friends' ancestry and have got back as far as Arbuckle LAWSON and have found the following information on ancestry, which I am very unsure of, as there is no source given, plus I cannot find the parish either. I have looked on Scotlandspeople and some otehr sites but without much success so far, although I have been able to verify a lot of the other data. I would also appreciate comments on the possible origin of the forename, and the parish, as detailed below. Thanks, in advance for any assistance with this. I would be glad of any help or advice regarding this, as I don't like including information that I cannot verify. Arbuckle LAWSON Birth 1788 in Rilmamock, Ayrshire, Scotland I am wondering if the parish is actually Kilmarnock but I am sure you will know much better than I. I do know that Arbuckle (also given as Arbucle and even Archibald) married Helen (aka Ellen and Eleanor), probable surname DOIG. He was in the Royal Artillery and there is reference to his father being in the same regiment, in a book about the history of the R.A. Band. Arbuckle's son, James, was a very famous musician in the R.A. Band and I found lots of information about him, from reliable sources. I am thinking that 'Arbuckle' is likely to have been the surname of an ancestor and have found this sort of naming before, in my husband's Scottish ancestry. Does that seem a reasonable hypothesis? I won't add more here, except to mention that I have been helped greatly already by some other researchers, on ancestry, to whom I am greatly indebted, as they amassed a wealth of information - there are always more quetions though aren't there? That's one of the things I love about genealogy and hsitorical research. Helen

I didn't give it a lot of thought, and it didn't ring any bells. This evening, however, I came across the following in my files on the Linns/Lynns of Scotland: On 1 April 1814, banns were proclaimed or a marriage performed for Helen Linn and William Rennie in Currie Parish, Midlothian. I have an Annie McCann in my tree - my great Grandmother born in 1860 in Derry. She was the daughter of Hugh McCann and Nancy McNaught. She did have a sister who went to the States because my mother (who was only 5 when Annie died in 1937) remembers her telling her that she went to the States to meet her sister and only recognised her because of her tiny hands and feet. Anyway Annie must have returned to Scotland because she was married to William McLeod at Greenock in November 1885. I have more information and some photos if you are interested. The pages are in poor shape, darkening to quite black in places, and missing the edges on many, but much useful information is still readable, albeit in that old style of writing, "secretary hand" with some old Scottish terms and occasionally in Latin. Don't have much at all on the Wylies I'm afraid. I have 2 or 3 who at the moment are unconnected but like everyone else in Ayrshire farms at the time are probably connected on way or another! I have: Andrew W m Jean Donald and have 3 children so far for them, William about 1805, Mary 28/7/1833 and Jean about 1809. Andrew farmed at Munnoch, Dalry. I don't have anything further on William Jean married John Kerr who was son of either John K and Jean Boyle or John K and Jean Chalmers. Jean Wylie died on 5th July 1835. Mary married James Spier, a son of my GGGG Grandparents Robert Spier and Martha Dunlop. She died at Dalry in Feb 1885. I also have a John Wylie who m Martha Kirkwood in 1838, she was the widow of Robert Robertson. Robert's elder brother Hugh was my GGG grandfather and his wife Jean was another child of Robert Spier and Martha Dunlop. John Wylie and Martha Kirkwood were farming at Holehouse, Dunlop in 1841 with her Robertson children from her first marraige and their I year old twins Martha and John. At the moment I don't have any connection between 1. Andrew Wylie and Jean Donald and the three children I have for them. 2. Margaret Wylie who m Robert Kerr 3. John Wylie who m Martha Kirkwood but maybe there is one...... Also re your original posting at the top of the page: Jean and Jane are totally interchangeable in Scotland right up to the early 1900s, as were Janet/Jessie and sometimes even Jenny (I had an Aunty Jenny who was actually Janet but I never ever heard her called that). Re info on the parishes you are interested in for the late 1700s and early 1800s, if you go to this site http://edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/ you can read the Old and New Statistical accounts of scotland. These are parish by parish reports, written by the local minister, of the conditions, lifestyle etc etc in the parish at the time and some of them are very detailed. The old one is from the late 1700s and the new one from the 1830s, more or less. It gives you the date in the report for each parish. You don't need to be a subscriber, click on the bit that says for non subscribers "browse scanned pages" and then choose the parish you want and the old or new account. Also don't knnow if you know but the horse tax records for Scotland are now available online. You will find them here: http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital_volumes/dv.php?dv_id=62 They don't give a lot of info, the name of farmer, name of farm and number of horses, but I've foound it very useful to establish that people were at a certain farm before 1841. Got my Kerr's sorted out by the way,and he two wives of my G Grandfather WERE related!
