Hi Listers, One of our kind and sharp fellow listers provided this to me, making sense of my transcription of that difficult first page. I'll be using this in future as a template to help decode the earlier writing style of this era. First, my attempt: ? man heath forsyt Latrday ? wallbeth not or stray in councell of ungodllie men Nor otans in sinoes way Let pleaseth his dellyt Upon gods Law & modifats Then, the real wording: Did you recognize that this was the first Psalm (metric version)? That man hath perfect blessedness Who walketh not astray In counsel of ungodly men Nor stands in sinner's way. Nor sitteth in the scorner's chair But placeth his delight Upon God's law, and meditates On his law day and night. Jim Bundy

I was searching for a death record for our Matthew Wyllie who was married to Janet Wyllie on Scotlandspeople using Ayr and I came up with 21 Andrew Wyllie's (various spellings of last name), most living in Stewarton which is where our Matthew lived. I know he was alive to 1754 by children's birth records and a family member listed 1791 as his death date, none of the 21 died in 1791. How does one determine which Andrew is the right one? Elaine

Author: farwellwalter Surnames: Graham, Kennedy of Knockdaw, Adair, Classification: deed Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/14020/mb.ashx Message Board Post: "swresearch" posted the following record on the County Down, Ireland, site: "5 June 1591. Precept from chancery for infefting John Graham of Knockdolian as heir of the deceased Robert Graham of Knockdolian his father STATING his having purchased a Precept from Chancery directed to Katharine Kennedy eldest of two daughters and heirs of deceased David Kennedy of Knockdaw -- immediate superior to Fergus Kennedy now of Knockdaw, immediate superior to William Adair of Kinhilt (son of Ninian Adair), immediate superior to John Graham of Knockdolian - and - REQUIRING Katharine Kennedy to infeft him as heir aforesaid, in respect Fergus Kennedy and William Adair had both delayed so to do. "And she did not. THEN "Another Precept from chancery would be directed to the bailie of Carrick to give infeftment, and the said Katharine Kennedy having delayed to obey the said Precept, THEREFORE "And for such contumacy COMMANDING the bailie of Carrick to give Seisin to him the said John Graham or his attorney, in the said penny and half penny land of Nether Conray and Straid. "To be holden of the King." N.B.: This instrument -- if correctly given -- outlines how land was acquired in medieval Scotland: FIRST: The King (all the country was his). SECOND: His tenant David Kennedy was deceased, leaving two daughters as co-heirs to the one and a half penny land of Nether Conray and Straid. This puts the King as the immediate superior to the two sisters. THIRD: Fergus Kennedy "now of Knockdaw" had been the under-tenant of David Kennedy, but now was the under - tenant of the two sisters for whom the King was responsible as their immediate superior! Fergus Kennedy was doing nothing until the problem was settled with the one sister. FOURTH: William Adair of Kinhilt (son of Ninian Adair) was the under-tenant of Fergus Kennedy. Adair was also doing nothing until the matter was resolved. Adair's under-tenant - FIFTH: John Graham of Knockdolian, heir of his father Robert Graham of Knockdolian who had been the fifth subtenant in Nether Conray and Straid, now was hoping to be the man to hold directly of the King (as far as this 1 1/2 penny land was concerned). However, the heiress of David Kennedy of Knockdaw wasn't acting. Evidently, John Graham of Knockdolian had appealed to the heiress's immediate superior for help, and the King had responded by placing the matter before Chancery. If there were no movement on the matter, then the bailie of Carrick was to step in and give infeftment to John Graham as son and heir. In any case, the 1 1/2 penny land was to be held by him -- as the tennant-in-chief. QUESTION: Was Knockdow, itself, divided between David Kennedy OF Knockdaw (father of the two co-heiresses), and, Fergus Kennedy also OF Knockdaw, but the under tennant of David in this 1 1/2 penny land? -- Walter Farwell Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The OPRs are records of the Baptism and not of the birth itself. Some records may state when the child was actually born, but to many of the men recording these records that was actually of no interest - what was of interest was entering the event which the church was paid for. The amount of information varies wildly - some don't even record the name of the mother. I couldn't even take a guess at the word you don't understand without seeing the record itself. Notes for David Thomas RUSK: Notes for DAVID THOMAS RUSK: David Rusk, a jeweler at Charleston, was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1848, and is a son of John and Johanna (Jones) Rusk, natives of Scotland. the former was a cabinet-maker, which trade he followed the most of his life. His wife died in Scotland, and he afterward immigrated to America in 1851. He located in Maryland, and remained a few years, when he removed to Sparta, Ill., where he died. He was the father of six children. David was but three years of age when his mother died, and he was left with his relatives in Scotland, when his father came to America. He received a liberal education in Ayshire, and in 1864 took passage on a steamer at Liverpool, for New York, where he landed after a seven days' voyage. He went from there to St. Louis, and from thence to Sparta, Ill., where he finished learning the watchmaker's trade, which he had previously undertaken. He remained in Sparta until 1875, when he came to Charleston and engaged in business on his own account. Although ! he began on a small scale, he has built up a good trade and now has a large stock of jewelry, etc. In 1874 he was united in marriage with Nora Knox, a native of Illinois, of German descent. Four children have been born to them: Eddie, Minnie, Maggie and an infant daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Rusk are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He is a member of the I. O. O. F. and the K. of P. In politics he is a Democrat, and has served as city councilman two terms. I am trying to decipher a record for Matthew Wylie b. Oct. 9, 1728, OPR Births 592/0010 0212 Fenwick. Since it says baptism at the end of the record, I assume this is the day he was baptized. Were the children usually baptized the same day they were born or how does one figure out the birthdate? Nonetheless this record says something that looks like " in Groo or Grod was baptized". What is the Groo or Grod? An area - and which one is correct, if either? Thank you. Elaine Sharp
hoping that someone may be researching the descendants of Thomas WALKER and Margaret WALLACE who were married in Stewarton in 1796 kind regards Brian Johnson
Jim, you may have inadvertently answered a different question for me. Do you think that, in the case of twins where one was frail and the other not, baptism for the frail child would be done quickly and the other done after a month's time? I have a case elsewhere in Scotland where what appears to be one man had two children baptized one month apart. I don't think it's a case where one record was wrongly transcribed because the two records differ in both the month and the day. My experience is that most babies were baptized at around 1 month old, but that if they were frail, they may have been baptized much sooner. It was a fear that if the child died unbaptized, they couldn't receive salvation, a horrible prospect for people in those times. Jim Bundy
