It is possible that he was born in 1882 (there has been a debate about the year, but the day & month are correct). Unfortunately, his birth certificate & other documentation were destroyed in a buglary a few years ago, so we are piecing things together why what family members can remember as well as a few newspaper clippings that were saved. Wow, the Andrews make sense & is interesting. His brother's name was Robert Reid. He was a prominent soccer player in the Junior International Team. He arrived in South Africa in 1909 and continued to play soccer. He lost a leg in the 1st World War. Are you a descendant from one of these Stewarts? You seem to have done the research. Don't get confused over purity of blood line. There's probably a lot less of that than we'd like to admit. It's family culture that counts. I got to this place searching Rootswebb for something on Fulton and Caldwell, preferably from either Ayrshire or Renfewshire. Your initial comment regarding a hand loom weaver caught my eye. Janet Fulton, a native of Fenwick, was my 4g-grandmother. She married Mathew Brown, a stone mason, my 4g-grandfather. Their son Robert Brown was a handloom (cottage) weaver. He married a Jean Caldwell in abt 1802. He had a shop with a number of looms in Lochwinnoch in the first couple of decades of the 19th cent. When the handloom trade fell into unrecoverable decline around 1820, he followed his son, John, my gg-grandfather to upper Canada. Sorry I don't have anything more on your (?) Fulton and Caldwell (quasi)ancestors. Cheers, John McDonnell Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: jonndean Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/14021.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There is no William Andrew Stewart, born 1884. Auchinleck, Ayr. There is however a William Andrew Stewart, born 1882. Auchinleck,Ayr. Its most likely he is the son of either of these four brothers, William, born 1844. George. born 1848. James. born 1850. John. born 1860. These four brothers were all sons of James Stewart, and Elizabeth Andrews, and thats where the middle name of Andrews, came from. All these sons were born in Auchenleck, Ayr. The big problem is that between 1880. and 1890 there were four William Stewart's, born in Auchinleck, Ayr. You say your William Andrew Stewart, came to South Africa, in 1904. along with his brother what was his brothers name and age this might help to narrow down their parents names. The only way to be certain of William Andrew Stewart's, parents names is to purchase his birth certificate which would provide his parents names. As i stated earlier in this post that there were four Wiliam Stewart's, born 1880. 1890. Auchinleck, Ayr, there is one 1884. but no middle name Andrew, its also possible this one added Andrew, as a middle name later in his life,or even baptised with this name. So you will need to be carefull you get the correct William's, birth. Regards, Jonn. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
