Go to Scotland's People search marriages 1855-2006, you can then download the marriage certificate for 5 credits. It should show you both sets of parents & whether deceased, also fathers occupation. This has been a family mystery for years and despite my attempts I can't get any further with my family. Something fishy going on for sure! I am looking for more information on my grandfather and his family. I have found his birth certificate on Scotlands People and it reads as follows: Benjamin Davidson Lived 8 Fore Street Kilmarnock Born Jan 2, 1903 Father Benjamin Davidson- Engine Fitter Mother Catherine Davidson nee McLenighan Married Nov 14, 1890 - Glasgow. I have tried searching the parents marriage certifcate but I come up with nothing. I have tried googling, searching census records, but I am unable to come up with anything. We believe the father of Benjamin Davidson Sr is James Davison and mother is Anna Barton, but that is just word of mouth and isn't necessarily true. Can anyone help or does anyone have any information on either of these people that would be helpful? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have looked at them. His son James Dean and Marion banks are there in 1836 I think, but no sign of James Dean and Elizabeth Wyllie. They were certainly there during the 1841 census at Townhead, and there is a death line for a James Dean in 1842 or 1843, (there is some confusion about the date)which may be him, but it gives no clue to the previous generation. The minister of Stevenston, Dr Landsborough, conducted his own Census of his parish in 1819, 1822 and 1836. These are available on the Three Towners website: http://www.threetowners.com/1819 Landsborough Census/1819_census.htm "There would be no point in veiwing the record, it would be unlikely to give any more information. Those OPR birth records were pretty thin on detail unfortunately." In practice I have found it useful to look at the OPRs for Stevenston. Otherwise I would not have been able to distinguish between the various John Youngs. The Stevenston session clerk used occupations, addresses and even nicknames to distinguish between them (John Young, cartier cf. John Young in Townhead cf. John Young in Castlehill cf. alias Fair John cf. alias Black John). As for middle names, these really came into vogue in the Victorian period and don't seem to have been used most for ordinary folk before then. James Deans and Marion Banks as well as James Deans and Elizabeth Wylie. Two different families that may or may not be connected. Your James Dean born in approximate terms abt 1788 Ayrshire and James Deans born abt 1815 Kilbirnie as I have it, or 1812 as the researcher has stated on line. James Deans married to Marion Banks was still alive in Stevenston in 1877 when he applied for Poor Relief, your James died before 1851. 1861 Census Dreghorn James Deans age 45yrs b. Kilbirnie Marion Deans age 45yrs b. Stevenston David age 17yrs b. Stevenston Charles age 13yrs b. Beith Helen age 8yrs b. Beith Record No. 238. Applied on 15 Oct 1877 at 9 am. Residence 5 Southhook Rows; born in Kilbirnie, Scotland; married aged 65; occupation coalminer; partially disabled. My family connect to the Marion Banks and James Deans line. Andy, can you contact me directly at searchinguk@shaw.ca and I can send you a couple of files that may help. One very good way to try to find further information is to search through the Poor Relief records that are indexed on line at ayrshire-roots.com Elizabeth Murphy Deans applied many times and one can find a wealth of info on these records. I do have one in the file for Elizabeth, wife of Matthew. Poor Relief Record Stevenston June 1880 till Dec 1881 Elizabeth Murphy or Dean age 64, a hawker, widow of Mathew Dean who died 16 years ago. She has two daughters Elizabeth m. to James Burns a labourer, and Mary m. John McKinley a miner in Linwood. She has been in Stevenston 8 years. Lyn's suggestion as to "Matthew" is where I was going next. As to Elizabeth Wylie as I have her parents as Matthew Wylie and Elizabeth Calderwood although this is not sourced only an "approximate fit" Also, Matthew as a Christian name is important as there were many, many more Matthew Wylies than there were Matthew Deans. Many researchers can not go back beyond what recorded records exist with any certainty. Second names are important as they can often use surnames of ancestors or family members. The naming pattern is important. Cheers Andy, Hope to hear from you soon, Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There would be no point in veiwing the record, it would be unlikely to give any more information. Those OPR birth records were pretty thin on detail unfortunately. It could be him, but I don't know. The 1841 census for Stevenston where he appears, "suggests" a birth year around 1788, but that census supposedly rounded ages to the nearest 5, plus people in that era were often vague about their ages anyway. There's no evidence of him having any middle names, but there's no evidence he didn't have middle names. I doubt if I'll ever find out. He lived for over 30 years in the Stevenston/Kilbirnie area, does anyone have any idea about any other records, of any kind, for that era, where he might appear, that would give a clue as to his origins?? Hi. I am interested in this family as my grandfather stayed with them as an apprentice Draper in 1891. [Census] His mother was a Brown and came from a long line of Ayrshire Browns. However I have often wondered if your Browns and mine were connected. Do you know the parents for your George Brown [marr. to Mgt. Peden}? perhaps I can connect if I can go back a further generation. Any info would be appreciated. kind regards Merrylee
