    3. Dear Fellow Listers I've been fighting prostate cancer for the past two years, and now my wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Therefore, please bear with me as I outline why I hopefully can enlist your investigative talents, and also use of Ancestry. I have successfully confirmed my direct line back as far as 1731 in Dailly, Ayrshire, but have been unable to track my 2x greatgrandfather after recording him on the 1861 census with his second wife, and son. James Ferguson born 2 Jun 1814 Dailly parents - Robert Fergusson born 27 Jan 1787 Dailly, coal miner Mary McLellan born 1 Apr 1787 Kirkmichael James married Rosina McHarrie (McHarvie) Wasson 11 Aug 1837 Dailly children - Robert Ferguson born 1840 Dailly Elizabeth Craig Ferguson born 27 Dec 1842 Paisley, Renfrewshire Wife Rosina died 28 May 1850 Dailly Daughter Elizabeth later emigrated to Australia alone married Thomas Webster 18 Apr 1862 Rockhampton, Queensland 1841 Census Dailly James 25 coal miner Rosina 25 wife Robert 1 son James then had a son with Agnes Aitken (no marriage certificate) Anthony McClelland Ferguson born 10 Aug 1846 Colmonell 1851 Census Dalmellington James 36 ironstone miner Dailly Robert 11 son Dailly Elizabeth 8 daughter Abbey, Renfrew Mary McClelland mother 62 Kirkmichael I now believe that James married Eliabeth Murray 13 Jul 1851 Dalmellington 1861 Census Dalmellington James 47 ironstone miner Dailly Elizabeth 46 wife Kirkoswald Robert 20 son ironstone miner Dailly After this James, Elizabeth and Robert have dissapeared. 3. Nyle, Using the site you gave me I found in 1841 census Irvine, Ayrshire, a William Shields 15, so he was probably born 1826, journeyman shoemaker, b. Ayrshire living with a Harley family. Maybe this is him. Is Irvine close to Stewarton? Elaine

    3. Nyle, Thank you for the information. The only problem I have with this one is our William is listed as a fatherless and motherless child in an 1851 family letter and an orphan which makes me believe he had no living siblings? 1. [AYR] 1841 Census Question - William Shields
    2. "E" Sharp
    3. I am trying to find a William Shields b. 1826 Stewarton, Ayrshire - I think he is the one b. 3/27/1826, to William Shields and Elisabeth Wyllie.  William came to the US ca 1849, he is in the 1850 census in IL.  I am trying to find him in the 1841 Scotland census.  So far only parents I can match to this William is William Shields, teacher, and Elisabeth Wyllie married 9/27/1824 in Stewarton. I believe the father William died in 1835 buried Upper Fenwick.  I think Margaret Shields d. Dec. 28, 1826, about 18 months old, buried Fenwick, may be his sister. The only William Shields I find in the 1841 census that seems close his birth year is a William Sheilds(sp) 12 years old, b. Renfewshire. His mother is listed as Mary Sheilds and there is also a James Reid living with them.  I know in 1850, William b. 1826 was an orphan having lost both his parents per family letter. Anyone have any other ideas I can try for this 1841 census?  Is there an 1831 census I am not aware of? Thank you. Elaine Sharp

    1. [AYR] Cholera in Stevenston
    2. Linda Nordby
    3. Dear List Members, I am wondering if anyone has any further information in regards to the plaque that took many of our ancestors in Stevenston. Possibly a list of those that died being held at the library or the Parochial Board records? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Best regards, Linda Nordby About 1845, Stevenston was visited by a plague in the form of Asiatic cholera or, as it was sometimes called, pestilential cholera. As has been previously stated, and in all, over six hundred people died in Stevenston from the disease over a period of years. Cholera was visited to the United Kingdom in 1832 being brought it is believed, by soldiers who had served in India. The disease was ushered in by an attack of enteritis, retching, deafness and blindness, which lasted from six to seven hours before the patient succumbed. Sanitary arrangements in Stevenston village at this period were non-existent. It is to the credit of the Parochial Board that certain of their number took it upon themselves to visit the various wells in the town from which the townspeople drew their drinking water and took the necessary steps to ensure that they were not contaminated with either decayed vegetables or animal matter. In some instances they found byres and stables contiguous to the drinking wells and ordered their removal. One party was prosecuted for throwing into the burn a chaff bed on which a member of the family had died of cholera. The burn at this period was open at 'Coorouden' or New Street as we know it today. A young doctor was brought from Glasgow to help combat the epidemic, but with the lack of proper sanitary arrangements it was rather difficult. However, the best was done and in some instances tenants were forbidden to keep cattle at the front or the back of dwellings. Nearly all the people, and they comprised weavers, colliers and labourers, who succumbed to the cholera were interred together in the common ground in the Coorouden cemetery. In 1871, the workmen at Ardeer Ironworks erected a memorial to the memory to all who had to be interred in common ground up till that time. The monument takes the form of an obelisk and is situated at the top of the main drive in the Coorouden or cemetery. The inscription reads: In this Plot Rest Six Hundred and Six of the Inhabitants of Stevenston Who died between 5th Aug. 1845 and April 1871 To Their Memory The Workers of Ardeer Ironworks Dedicate this Monument
