I can take a better photo of it if you like. My husband obtained this portrait as well as one of a David Dunlop at a Sotheby Parke Bernet auction held in April of 1977 onsite at the old Dunlop home, Ellerslie Farm, in or near Petersburg, Virginia. The auction was of the estate of Nannette F. Dunlop. I recently found a note passed on to my late husband by the auction house. The note was from a Mrs. William Steele Gray of Greenwich, CN, who identified herself as Margaret Dunlop. My internet research seems to indicate this was Mrs. W.S. Gray the 2nd. Mrs. Gray was inquiring after the painting of David Dunlop. I can also send you a photo of David Dunlop's painting. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I believe John's parents were William Wilson b.1830? and Margaret Allan(b.1832?) of Dreghorn Scotland. I cannot verify this through cross reference with censuses of that time. My dad had died suddenly back in 2006. Anyway I had looked up many certificates back then and I am only now resisiting this part of the family. I had been renovating a house in Riccarton back in 2006-2007 then I have been writing a book about Irvine which is nearly done. At present I am writing an article for a family history magazine about the part of Coylton where our ancestors lived hence I am revisiting my Wilson and Lindsay lines. Mary is the daughter to John's first wife Janet Wilson (not from my Wilson line) her father was Alexander Wilson and mother Abigail Stewart. She and her brother were illegitimate. I have tracked her father as he is living with his father in the census of 1851. I don't yet know about Abigail as I have not got her birth. When Janet Wilson dies in the late 1857 around Ayr her father Alexander was still alive. Alexander's father was from Stewarton. John Lindsay then went on to marry Annie Hay Dunlop in Dreghorn. I will probably have a photo of the gravestone somewhere. I will out the exact details for you. Another lady years ago contacted me and told me she was descended from Mary also - her name was Barbara Tuck?? Is she related to Steven? I am still adding more info to this family and am not certain about John Wilson's parents as yet, as to who they were. My father was James Wilson(b 1927), his father was James Wilson(b-1890), his parents were John Wilson and Mary Lindsay. I am also very confused about just who John Wilson's parents were. I thought it was William and Margaret Allen, but I cannot find this family on census searches in Scotland in 1861. Some of the 1871 censuses list John Wilsons born around 1855, but some list him as an adopted son, others have different parent names. Do you have any information on who John's siblings were. I'd love to hear from you. Thanks- John D Wilson- Ottumwa, Iowa Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
