    1. [AYR] Estate records - Barskimming Estate, Mauchline
    2. Kay Williams
    3. Dear Alistair Donald and Friends, Estate papers are likely to be in private hands. However, the National Register of Archives aims to locate such records and 'encourage their care' Last time I checked it, which was some time ago, the register was a series of bound volumes and I see not everything is included in the online catalogue. While still privately owned, some items may be held as gift deposits at Edinburgh or can be got as a temporary deposit on loan. Owners may also refuse requests. The full catalogue can only be consulted in the National Archives of Scotland, the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh and The National Archives in London. NRA Scot http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineRegister/ The NAS has a collection of plans which are catalogued under RHP, which can include estates or farms. Not all are available (eg the estates of Stair and Ballantrae are closed). http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/ I checked this for Barskimming and found an OS-based plan with sale particulars dating from 1914 with open access [NAS RHP5571]. This might answer your question. Apparently there is related material in the Northumberland Record Office (!). Tip: Put RHP in the reference box and make sure you click 'starts' (green spot); in 'search for' put Barskimming and click 'all words'. You can also check the following: Scottish Archive Network http://www.scan.org.uk/catalogue/ Scotland's Places http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/content/index.php?action=view&id=1 National Archives http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ Archives Hub http://archiveshub.ac.uk/ Other useful sites: Gazetteer (general) http://www.scottish-places.info/ NLS online historical maps http://maps.nls.uk/index.html (including a very small number of estate plans). It might be that if you contact the local library for the area directly, or the local authority archives, they will know where the papers or records for an estate are. Best wishes, Kay in Edinburgh

    3. Hello Alastair. Yesterday I went to Ayrshire Archives and as Margaret said you may find information on the site re your inquiry as to Barskimming. That was my intent yesterday but was side tracked by the information in regards to Burgesses and Guild members which can be searched through the link below. For those of us looking for early ancestors who may had reason for association in Irvine I was pleased to find two early Jamphra/Jamphray (later Jeffrey and variants) surnames as well as two Frew surnames along with others valuable to my research. Easy search with just the surname needed Good luck Alastair, Linda Nordby Royal Burgh of Irvine List of Burgesses and Guild Brethren 1715-1920 http://www.ayrshirearchives.org.uk/search.asp -----Original Message----- From: ayrshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ayrshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of The Pools Sent: Friday, September 17, 2010 6:28 PM To: ALASTAIR DONALD; AYRSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AYR] Barskimming Estate, Mauchline Hi Alistair you could try the Ayrshire Archives in Kilmarnock, they do have a website but cant remember the address, put that in Google. 2. Irene Macleod
    3. Hi Elaine The 1750s is a little on the early side for a bible ...but not impossible ...they're more common in the 1800s ....more people could read and write. If you think there was one then it's worth making an effort to find out who in the family has it....and would photograph it for you. The original baptisms for Thomas and Margaret's children ...do they give you an occupation for Thomas and is the place more than just the parish? If all the baptisms took place in the same parish I would be tempted to hire the film from the LDS and trawl through it noting all the Wylies ...of whatever spelling! You might be able to arrange them into families. Then I'd look for memorial inscriptions and burial records (if you are lucky) As for your question ...how do you know if you've got the right one? Well, you can never be absolutely sure. You've got more chance if they were something other than farm labourers or if they had an unusual name. If they had property then they might have left a will. 1. [AYR] How do you add to family tree further
    2. I have a simple question but I am sure a difficult answer. How do you add to the family tree further. Case in point - I have Andrew Wyllie b. abt. 1726-1728 according to a family member who did research years ago. I have, thus far, not found his marriage record about 1745-1750? to Janet Wylie. There was a family bible and maybe he got the information from this bible. I have found a birth record for a Matthew Wylie s/o Thomas Wylie and Margaret Stevenson b. 1728. How do I know this is the right Matthew as I do not know who his parents were. Plus this couple did not name any of their children Thomas or Margaret. Children I have been able to find birth/baptism records for are John bapt. 1749, Mary b. 1749, I do not think they were twins, Robert b. 1750 and Robert b. 1754 (I am assuming the first one died and they named the next Robert?). The family researcher also lists a James but I have not found a birth/baptism record for him and he is listed as married to Mary Wilson. I did find such a marriage but it took place in 1764 and I am wondering if he was too young to be the right one. The only one that I have been able to find further info on is the son John, from whom my niece is descended. So, back to my original question, who do you know if you have the right person when doing research? This family name was also spelled Wyllie and any other variation thereof. A puzzlement? 2. Hi Elaine.  Am including 2 registers i have. Perhaps it will help you, as they seemed to be registered w/th same words, depending on who wrote them. "John ARMOUR and Margaret CRAIG both in this parish after lawful proclamation were married 28th April 1794"   "John ARMOUR in High Street and Margaret LORIMER in Waterloo Street, were proclaimed on the three preceding Sabbaths and the extract called for in order to marriage" 4/7 JAN 1844

    3. My ancestor, Hugh Donald, was born in 1789 in the parish of Mauchline at Mosshead Farm to Hugh Donald & Margaret Andrew. I'd like to find out if the farm was part of the Barskimming Estate and if there are any estate papers where I might find more information about the family. Hugh was later toll-keeper at the Loans Toll in the parish of Dundonald. Many thanks Alastair Donald

    3. Also, there are two parishes in Ayrshire that begin "Co" - Colmonell and Coylton. Perhaps the bride and groom both lived in one of those parishes.
