Hi Listers, The following was one of the most difficult to decipher that I've encountered, especially the long phrase in brackets. I hope that can better sense of it than I, and I would be happy to share a scan of that page to anyone who would like to view it. The note seems to be related to giving permission for a house/small business to be erected up to and on the kirk yard dyke (wall). It would help I suppose if I could understand 17th century candle making. I have a problem where my GG grandfather's burial location is unknown. He lived, worked, and died in Glasgow in February 1919, but there is NO record of his burial in the City. Thinking laterally, I wonder whether his wife, who was from Largs, had his remains transported to Largs for burial in a family lair. [Although I have my doubts about this, his wife died in Largs, and so maybe she had bought the lair for them both]. His wife was Janet Aitken, born 17 Dec 1847 Died 5 Feb 1940 at 132 Main Street, Largs. Her parents were John Aitken and Susan Hill, both born in 1817 in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire and Largs respectively. Would anyone have any access to Largs burials in either 1919 or 1940, or MI's for Largs cemeteries? TIA edward Edward R Paxton
Hello Listers I'm beginning to write my paternal grandmother's story - nothing extensive, just a page or two - and have a couple of questions. She was born in Newton-on-Ayr on 17th December 1876 and migrated to Australia in 1900 (June to August) when she was described as a cook. As she died in 1911, not even my father knew much about her (he was 4 at the time), but she had obviously been to school as her mother wrote to her during her few short years of life in Australia. Addresses I have: Jock Street Lane, Newton-on-Ayr - where Kate was born. 17 Elba Street, St Quivox - 1881 Census (aged 4) 26 Nelson Street, Elba - 1891 Census (aged 14) 70 Taylor Street, Ayr - for her mother in the 1901 Census 21 McCalls Avenue - from where her mother wrote to her in Australia. Her school years would probaby have been between the 2 Census takings of 1881 and 1891. Are the addresses for those years far apart? Does anyone know what schools there might have been within walking distance of either in the 1880s please? Could someone point me in the right direction for finding out. Is there a Mailing List for Ayr itself as distinct from the county? Is there a site for Ayrshire history - maybe a particular library? Does anyone know if the above streets (Elba, Nelson and Taylor) are still in existence please? I have photos, kindly sent by a local Lister, of 21 McCalls Avenue, but it is possible that she never lived at there, or if so, then in her teen years. Many thanks Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
Janet Petttigrew was born on the 10th August 1798 in Old Monkland, Lanark. Died Bythswood, Lanark 19th February 1879. I take it that this is the one you are writing about? You didn't say if Lightbody was Janet Pettigrews uncle or the grandsons? Ken Brown

This is a geneology chart sent to me many years ago. Only recently did I find that the person who sent the list and I had the same ggg-grandparents. I have tried to contact him but no luck. If any one is interested in any of these names or knows Mr. Arnott from Victoria, I would love to get back to him or any other researcher. Thank you, Kate A. chris-kate

Jill, google 'cotton factory images'... that may help answer your question about the need for a wood sawyer. I imagine presses, sorting tables, tubs etc etc were all made of wood. Nyle NZ
Has anyone heard of Finlay & Sons in Catrine? My ancestor James Hepburn worked for them for 31 years and was presented with a gold watch when he left. From looking it up on Google it was a cotton works. My ancestor in census 1841-71 was always referred to as a wood sawyer. When he emigrated to New Zealand his occupation was still a wood sawyer. Why would a cotton factory employ a wood sawyer? Any suggestions? Regards from Jill in New Zealand
