    3. I think that there are still many of us that have been with list from the get go and there was a time when we posted "Roll Call" that gave us a chance to post our surname interests. This may be the ideal opportunity to bring back a old favourite. With the advent of Ancestry.com etc we have stepped back from posting as much as we once did. It has taken away a lot of the "thrill of the hunt" that is used to be and the ability to find new cousins here on the Ayrshire List as well as the communication element, so here I go... to follow.............. 3. All- Can someone please enlighten me of the name variants of Marjory? I have a Marjory ROBERTSON in my family tree that does not show up on the 1841 census. I am feeling that she must have died since she is not in Scotlands' people OPRs. She was putatively born Oct 26, 1817 in Coylton, Ayrshire to William ROBERTSON and Mary DRENNAN. Are there any connections out there? Many thanks, Bob

    2. MARC ARCHER
    3. I'm searching for evidence of John McQueen & Mary Davidson who would have married before 1812 for the b. of James McQueen in Kilmarnock who died in 1898 in Dalmellington, lising his parents as John McQueen & Mary Davidson.  Nothing more known of John & Mary. James McQueen m. in 1839 in Ochiltree to Mary Thom, and bef 1842 to Margaret Templeton. James McQueen may have had a close relative, William McQueen who lived next to him on 1861 census in Dalmellington, b. abt. 1810 in Colmonel.  On the 1861 census he is listed as James also, but on other census he is named William.  I believe the census-taker was confused.  Can find a death record, but William m. Margaret McFadzean in 1842 in St. Quivox & Newton, and later m. Marion Stevenson. Does anyone know how to find out if John McQueen & Mary Davidson had other children who died after 1854 on scotlandspeople, particularly, daus?   Thanks, Marc Archer

Hello! What a perfect invitation and opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Jeanne and I just joined the list yesterday. I wandered over from the Lanark list when I found that I had ancestors in Ayrshire as well. I'm researching the names MCILWRICK and CAMPBELL, specifically: Jean MCILWRICK married George CAMPBELL on 13 March 1759 in Barr, Ayrshire. They are my 5th great grandparents. Children I'm sure of are Gilbert (1759) George (1761) and John (1764) and were born in Barr. Gilbert is my direct line and he married Sarah MCHARG about 1787, their son, my 3rd great grandfather John CAMPBELL, was born April 1788 Ballantrae. Is anyone else researching these names or does anyone have more information about them? Thanks so much. Jeanne

My GGG GF Robert Good appears "out of the air" in Maryland sometime around 1770 then moves to South Carolina where he dies in 1799.. 1. [AYR] Constablewood, Largs.
    2. Lynne Hadley
    3. Hi All, Since I first enquired about Constablewood in Largs, I have been researching still further re: my Finnie family. William Finnie was married to Mary Wilson of Largs in 1736. Mary's father is recorded as James Wilson. William was living in Stevenston at the time. Given that my William is said to have moved to Kilmarnock from Constablewood, sometime prior to 1745, it would seem to me that he must have come from the family mentioned in the following inscription: John FINNIE, b 1692, d Apr 1778; Proprietor of Constablewood, Largs Erected by his son, James The following reference to "Constable Ward" & James Wilson sort of reinforces my thoughts re: this. Mary Wilson died in 1744, I believe. I'm trying to track down Mary's family, and would love to hear from anybody who is researching the Wilson family in and around Largs..or who may be able to point me in the right direction regarding this. Thanks, guys. Kind regards, Lynne. From: "Loretta" < lynneage@h-o-l.com> Subject: Re: [AYR] Constablewood near Largs Date: Fri, 8 Jan 2010 20:56:46 -0500 In-Reply-To: <E5ECCA8C0B804A6BA0598BE34CB074EA@DD4KCF1S> Mike, I have access to Pont and am sorry to say he does not mention Constablewood or Constable Wood. In George Robertson's "Topographical Description of Ayrshire: More Particularly of Cunninghame" (1820) is a chart entitled "Valued Rents Scots of the Parish of Largs," which includes Nodesdale and, immediately preceding that, Constable Ward, & West Grass Yards. At the time, unfortunately, the proprietors of Constable Ward were the heirs of James Wilson. There is no date attached to the chart, so I assume it is from the period in which the book was published. Going back to Pont, he does say this ... "... 'Yard' appears to be a measure, or quantity of land, in law phrase. It varied however, in different parts of the country, from 15 acres up to as much as 30 or 40. It is of very frequent occurrence in topography in various quarters- in the neighbourhood of Largs, besides this [Annat-Zaird of the Skelmorly Estate], there is 'Grass-yards, Constableyards,' &c." I've checked several similar volumes and found nothing, but there is this tombstone inscription from a rootsweb message:
