Did you see my email to the group showing what I have in my CUTHBERTSON family so far? There is a gap in my CUTHBERTSON family between John's marriage to Anne GRAHAM in 1811 and the Janet b. between 1814 and 1818, then the next child Margaret is b. 1824, so other children were b. between 1811 and 1824. There may be an Elizabeth among them. John and Anne were m. in Irvine, Ardrossan but the children from Margaret on down were b. in Renton, Cardross, Dunbartonshire. Janet CUTHBERTSON m. James STRACHAN and lived mostly in Renton, Cardross, Dunbartonshire, although two of their children were b. in Paisley, Renfrew and one in Denny, Sterlingshire. He was a Calico Printer and a Paisley Printer so I imagine he went where the work was to be found. Janet's b. is recorded in 1841 as not being in Renton, but simply in the British Isles, although all the other census record her a being b. in Renton as her younger siblings were and most of her children were. I feel she probably was b. in Ayr as were the other children down to Margaret but I have not been able to find them. Janet and the STRACHAN family came to America in 1872 and John CUTHBERTSON died before then but his wife Ann continued to live in Renton until at least 1871 but I do not know what happened to them after that. Walter COLQUHOUN m. Margaret CUTHBERTSON and their son Walter, Jr. came to America with the STRACHANS. Janet In a message dated 10/31/2010 3:57:15 A.M. 3. Hi Marc, Is there a Gaelic rendering of McQueen - I feel sure there is - and that may be the key. Or of Davidson for that matter? And all the many spellings and variations of all names? For years I was sure I couldn't find a marriage for my Sarah Mcneill to Andrew McEwan/McEwing until someone mentioned the name McEown and there it was - Andrew McEown and Mayzie McNeill 1824. Thanks Mike. I've never heard of the center or the books. Can you tell me a little bit about them? Jeanne

    1. [AYR] Roll Call CONWAY and FISHER
    2. Pat Carson
    3. Well, maybe I should have included my folk too! So here they are James CONWAY (1837-1923) born Ireland, probably Co Down, arrived in Ayrshire about 1845 - a little 8 year old boy, fleeing the potato famine and certain disease and probable death, he wore only a petticoat and had no shoes. His father John CONWAY was in his middle 40s, his mother - Jane WAUGH - ten years younger. Their other four children ranged from 12-year-old Jane to toddler Agnes. James' auntie Janet had already arrived in Ayrshire a couple of years previously with her husband James McCLENAGHAN and their 3 sons. They lived much of their life in Monkton, as did John and Jane until Jane died in 1873 at one of their elder sons' home at Beith Railway station. Young James married his love Agnes McKenzie FISHER (1842-1938) in 1861 at Troon, where James had been living with his elder brother Hugh and his wife, Marion RALSTON(E). Shortly before she married, Agnes was working as a kitchen maid for the collector of taxes, George Oswald, in Prestwick at Orangefield House (which, in 1943, became the control tower for the fledgling Prestwick airport). James and Agnes lived long lives, producing 5 sons, 3 of whom became churchmen, and six daughters. Seven of their children married and they produced 24 known grandchildren for the couple. James and Agnes moved to Dundee about 1870 and celebrated their Golden (50 years) and Diamond (60) wedding anniversaries there before retiring to Blebo Craigs near Cupar in Fife. James died in 1923 at the age of 86; Agnes lived until she was nearly 97. Today, their family (many of whom are equally long-lived) is spread across the world and embraces many different vocations and professions. Agnes was of Irish stock too, but her folks had returned to Scotland some 40 or so years earlier than James'. Agnes' brother, although he worked as a shipwright or joiner, was a published poet in the latter part of the 19th century. Anyone with an interest can probably find (Robert) MacKenzie FISHER (1840-1910) and his work 'Poetical Sparks' via one of the many search engines. Do you connect to this line? Several cousins have been discovered, but I'm sure there are more of you out there! Pat "Here's tae us! Wha's like us? Damn few! - an' they're a' deid!" Hi Jeanne, I think it is probably because there are such a LOT of Campbells but really I'm not sure. I suppose that as long as you know which line you are going along they may be fairly easy - but connecting one line to another is, as far as I have found, difficult. My ggg-grandfather John Campbell married Hannah Sloan in 1795. Her siblings were Janet 1795, William 1798, Andrew 1800 and Margaret 1806. Their daughter Hannah was born in Ochiltree 1802 married gg-grandfather John Templeton in 1834 in Cumnock and Auchinleck. I think my ggg-grandfather John Campbell's parents were William Campbell (born 1727) and Janet Hannah who were not married. I also think he did marry someone else. I really don't know how to go any further with this line. Best regards, Mary
