Hi all - I am writing with puzzlement. How can these two five-year-olds be living here by themselves? Any thoughts? I have to think if you looked at the end of page 8 [this being page 9] you'll find the rest of this family in the 1841 Census. Most families were listed in descending order of age for the children, so these 5 year old twins should be the youngest children in the family. If you don't find them on page 8, then an Enumerator or a Transcriber wasn't doing their job well. Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA ---------------------------
Kay I brought my daughter, her husband and 2 year old granddaughter to Scotland for 3 weeks for this event from Australia. Although we only stayed in Edinburgh for 5 days for the Glans Gathering. If that had not been on, we would not have gone. Nor would I have seen my granddaughter learn her numbers as she went up and down the lift in the hotels. I heard some of the debate on BBC radio when I was driving around in early September in Scotland. If I recall the radio, people were talking about the benefit for Edinburgh rather than the benefit for the whole of Scotland. It certainly brought more people into Scotland than would have normally come at that time of year. Whoever will form the New Scottish Government in May 2011, still need have a Home Coming in 2014 for Bannockburn. While it would appear from the websites that you have provided that the financial planning and other issues will need to be better managed in future. I was told in Ireland that there are some 36 million Ulster Scots living in the USA; while about 25% of the population of Canada would be of Scottish origins, the same with Australia and perhaps even more in New Zealand. With may of these people having never seen Scotland or their Clans homelands. This is a very big market to help lift Scotland out of the economic down turn. I know one Clan group will also like to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Flodden Fields. Certainly, I was involved with marketing Scottish Tourism I would have something going from 2013 to late 2014 to bring people to Scotland to help provide employment. As you may know, we currently have Oparh in Australia for a week. Our various State and Federal Governments have contributed 3.5 million dollars to her visit and the 302 guest she brought from the USA - according to last night TV News.. While the same could well apply to the families of those overseas servicemen, who may wish to see where they ancestor was stationed, trained, etc in Scotland. I will certainly, I will be saving my pennies to make sure that I go in 2014 to learn more about Scottish History and the part my clan played in it. Some of the records on the Boyd are in conflict with the dates and event and to which person was involved in events or part of Scotland Independence. For the 3rd and 4th chiefs of the Clan we are told:- C1 Sir Robert Boyd, b / /12xx ( ), before 1,270, d / /1300 ( ), bu , m / /126x, wife unknown, dau of and (nee ) ????, b / /12xx ( ), d / /13xx ( ), bu , and had issue:- [Lived: ] - The Scots Peerage, ed Sir James Balfour Paul, Volume V, 1908, pp 137-138, says:- "Robert Boyd occurs in the Ragman Roll as taking the oath of the allegiance to Edward I. at Berwick-on-Tweed 28 August 1296. (Cal. Doc. Scot, ii. 202.) He is said to have afterwards joined Sir William Wallace in his gallant attempt to assert the independence of his country. *3(Douglas.)" D1 Sir Robert Boyd, first Feudal Baron of Kilmarnock, bc / /1270 ( ), d not long after July 1333 ( ), bu , m / /129x (church, town, county, etc), wife unknown, dau of and (nee ) ????, b / /127x ( ), d / /13xx ( ), bu , and had issue:- However, the chart The Boyd Family 1205-1748 by Dick Institute, Kilmarnock, said the first of these tow Sir Robert Boyd was hanged at Ayr in 1296. While the History of the Boyd from East Ayrshire Council says:- - "The Boyds first came to importance during the Wars of independence against Edward I and Edward II, forming part of the hard core of resistance to the occupation by the English King. Sir Robert's father was hanged at Ayr in 1296 along with many lords from the West of Scotland. Sir Robert himself is said to have taken a leading part in the Burning of the Barns of Ayr when the English force in Ayr was destroyed in revenge by Wallace. In fact Boyd generally acted as Wallace's second in command." This above information may explain by the younger Sir Robert Boyd took such an active part with Wallace and Bruce. However, the question to both lists is "What other Chiefs of Families where hung at 'Ayr' "? And where might his hanging have taken place. Might this have been at Ayr Castle or the Citadel on the south side of the River Ayr? Geoff Crolley 05/25/2010 11:59 AM This time I'm taking no chances of people not hearing of this: Homecoming Scotland 2014 According to a press release on the 25th of May there will be a second "Homecoming Scotland" in 2014. Building on the success of the Year of Homecoming the Scottish Government will be staging the second formal celebration in 4 years.
When I went to the website to the Press Release, it came up with Error 404 page could not be found. So would anyone have a copy of the Press Release of May 2010? Secondly, when I was at all 3 Local Studies Libraries in September 2010, their staff did not know of any Home Coming in 2014? While Ayrshire did not become involved in Bannockburn, it was very much involved with Bruce from 1306 and various Battles like Loudon Hill took place in 1306 (I think). And Bruce returned to Ayrshire from Rathlin Island to start this march to Independence. So are there any members of the various Family History Societies in Ayrshire on this list? Do they know if one or all three Ayrshire Councils are planning anything for Ayrshire. I know that Sir Robert Boyd, the 4th known Head of the Boyd Clan was a "commander" at Bannockburn. But I do not know what he commanded. He is certainly not one of the three Divisional Commanders. The details I currently have for him is:- D1 Sir Robert Boyd, first Feudal Baron of Kilmanock, bc / /1270 ( ), d not long after July 1333 ( ), bu , m / /129x (church, town, county, etc), wife unknown, dau of and (nee ) ????, b / /127x ( ), d / /13xx ( ), bu , and had issue:- [Lived: ] - The Scots Peerage, ed Sir James Balfour Paul, Volume V, 1908, pp 138-139, says:- "Sir Robert Boyd, the faithful companion of Robert the Bruce in the War of Independence. (Dalrymple's Annals, ii. 2) A Robert Boyd attended the King's escheators from Dumbarton to Renfrew with Sir John Walleys and their men at arms, October 1304, (Cal. Doc. Scot, ii. 443.) and Sir Robert de Boyt was taken prisoner by the English in the Castle of Kildrummie shortly before 13 September 1306, (Ibid, ii. 490.) a Duncan Boyd having been captured and hanged 4 August previously. (Ibid, ii. 486.) Robert Boyd joined in a letter to the King of France, 16 November 1308, (Acta Parl. Scot, i.459.) and he was one of the Scottish commanders at the battle of Bannockburn 24 June 1314. For his faithful adherence to his cause, he had a grant from King Robert to 'Roberto Boyd, militi, dilecto et fideli nostro,' of the lands of Kilmarnock, Bondington, and Hertschaw, which were John de Baliol's; the lands of Kilbryd and Ardnel (Portincross), which were Godfrey de Ross's son to the deceased Reginald de Ross; all the land which was William de Mora's, in the tenement of Dalry; with seven acres of land, which were Robert de Ross's in the tenement of Ardnel; all erected into an entire and free barony to be held of the King. Among the missing charters of King Robert I. are five to Robert Boyd, of Duncoll and Clark's lands in Dalswinton (p. 13, No. 77), to Robert Boyd, son of William Boyd, of the lands of Duncoll and the barony of Dunswinton and lands of Dalgarthe (p. 13, No. 86), to Robert Boyd, of the lands of Glenkin (p. 13, No. 87), of the five-pound land of Trabeache, in Kyle regis (p. 14, No. 104), and of the five-penny lands of Trabreche, in Kill (p. 22, No. 58). He had three sons:-" When I visited Stirling in 2008 and 2009, I asked the question at the various Offices as to whom where the 24 or so clans that supported Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn. However, no one could answer me or give me any lists. I would still be interested in who else besides the Boyds were at Bannockburn. Hi Obituaries of 'ordinary folk' are not common in Scotland ...nothing like the informative columns found in many US papers. The most likely would merely be an intimation of the death ...date of death, widow if any and the date and time of the funeral. Unless he was a big fish in a small pond ...eg the local headmaster; the minister; biggest employer in the district. The Burns Monument Centre in Kilmarnock has got a collection of historical newspapers ...I should think that you can pay for a search of these to see if there is any obit. http://www.burnsmonumentcentre.co.uk/20/archives_family_and_local_history/ Irene On 10 December 2010 18:57, Georgia <flashquarter@gmail.com> wrote: > Hello, > > I would like to know if anyone could point me in the right direction to > find > the obituary of Thomas FINDLAY, who died in Jan of 1971 in Stewarton, > Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. > > Many thanks, > > Georgia > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > AYRSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
Thanks to everyone who helped out with my obituary question. Happy Holidays to all! Georgia
During my 3 weeks in Scotland, I asked the question of a number of people if they knew if a decision had been made about to "hold any celebration" for the 700th Anniversary of Bannockburn. No one could give me an answer. So if you are a member of a Family History Society could I suggest that you bring this up at your first meeting in 2011 and have the Society to write to "the powers that be in Scotland". I assume that these "powers to be" would be:- i) Tourism Scotland ii) The Standing Council of Chiefs iii) The Scottish Tourism Minister and perhaps even iv) The First Minister of Scotland. I am sorry that I do not have any Emails addresses that I can give you but I am sure that you will find these quickly by googling. As an individual, you may even wish to write to various Scottish Newspapers to ask this question. I attended the 2009 Homecoming in Edinburgh (and although I spent the 2 days at Edinburgh at the Clan Boyd tent talking to people about Boyd families and history), I found it quite enjoyable. I have since been able to follow up with people that I meet there So please bring this issue up at your next Family History Society meeting, so that letters are written to Authorities in Scotland, saying that it we do not want to wait another 89 years before another Clans Gathering is held. Hopefully WHEN the next Clans Gathering is held, more than 140 Clans will have tents and can pass on their own history. Thank you Mike Boyd Chairman Historical Committee House of Boyd Society
When I meet with the Hays in London in September this year we got around to talking about Robert the Bruce and the question was asked:- "Why did those at Bruce's coronation follow Bruce when it would have been much easier to stay at home out of trouble" I could not answer this question and during my 9 week trip I tried to work out an answer but without any success. Thank you Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust.
Dear Friends, I'm glad Mike Boyd and others enjoyed the Homecoming Gathering event held in Edinburgh. In my humble opinion, the economic nightmare here in the U.S. and elsewhere was a huge factor in the disappointing turn-out in Edinburgh.
