    3. I just returned from a week in Scotland for our retirement trip. My son and I spent one day at the records search room and were each charged 15 pounds for a seat at a computer. I saved records to a flash drive rather than try to get printed records back home and was charged for each download. But to find those pre 1855 parish records was priceless! I also have spend time/money on the Scotland website from my home in VA to get records. Being in the search room was certainly more expensive but it takes money to maintain the procedure and premises. I also have to say that taking a train to Girvan & finding the very street (Cauldshore Rd) where my 3rd Greatgrandparents lived as weavers in 1841 was emotional as was walking in Maybole where they lived at Dunduff Cothouses in 1851. Walking the shoreline in Girvan with the faint outline of the Ailsa Craig in the background and breathing that fresh air gave me a sense of gratitude for all those who lived before me and more determination to find out all I can about them before they all emigrated to the US in the 1870s. The train ride was a great overview of my history as it passed so many places my ancestors were born & lived; Kilwinning, Ayr, Newton on Ayr, Dalry etc. Next time I need to visit Kirkmichael, Stranraer, Wigtownshire & New Cumnock. 3. Bill Which of the three Ayrshire Council areas is John's grave in? About 20 years ago, as a make work program, some had people write down the inscriptions of their cemeteries. So each of the three Councils Local Studies Library will have these books by cemetery. So have you contacted the correct library for the area where his grave is? Peter Gemmell was the previous farmer at High Todhill, but I don't know if he was related to Andrew Gemmill, Christina's father. He was married to Janet Dunlop (nee Orr), a widow, who was older than he and already had children. They had no children between them. I have written down somewhere that Peter is a brother of Alexander Gemmell of East Tannacrief Farm, who married a Janet YOUNG. All these Fenwick families are so interconnected! I don't know anything about Christina Young's siblings, but maybe I will try to follow up and see if I can learn something about them. The youngest son, John, age 29, seems to have taken over at High Gainford after Andrew died. He had two older brothers, James and Andrew, but they appear to have left home. There are also a number of sisters as they were a family of 9 children. The Margaret Hopkin Gemmill (or Gemmell), who is related to me, was actually married to John CURDIE, and it was her daughter Elizabeth who married Robert Lambie and had two daughters in Penninghame, Wigton (Newton Stewart), Margaret who m Peter Bryson, and Agnes who m Thomas Edgar. I know nothing further about either one. Margaret Hopkin Gemmell d 1912 in Newton Stewart. Please check with your friend about William John Gemmill and we'll see if he fits in anywhere. He is shown as a boarder & widower, retired farmer who was born Fenwick. He isn't on the 1891 census with them. I thought at first that he was probably Elizabeths father, but I have Elizabeth's father Andrew Gemmill (High Gainford). I thought there were a lot of Youngs in Ayrshire but I think the Gemmill name seems to be just as complicated! Another connection we have with the Gemmill family is a William John Gemmill who married Helen Grace Gibson (daughter of my grandfathers brother William Service Young) in 1955 in Minnigaff Parish. I still occasionally see one of their daughters, I must as if her dad came from Ayrshire. Do you have any marriage details of Christina Young's siblings? I go to Newton Stewart quite regularly to visit family, so next time I will visit the library there and see if I can find the death of Margaret Hopkin Gemmill. I have lived in Wigtownshire all my life (and that's quite a few years now). I don't know anything about High Gainford I'm afraid but lots of these farms get split up over the years, or the land gets bought for housing or roads. 3. Terese I would suggest that you do "several" Emails about the various families and places that you mentioned. You will also have to send these messages to each of the named rootsweb.com net lists. With regard to "I would love to find out more on Dorothy's family. There are many Wylies by the Harrises as they moved across the United States but we do not have her direct line. " You will need to supply dates and location and any other data that you may have on her and Robert Harris. With regard to "Our Harrises which are Group 3 are know to have emigrated about 1730 with the Pickens, Calhouns, and McCalls to Lancaster, PA and migrated outwards." Do you know in which County in PA these families settled? It would sound like Lancaster County, PA or even the Cumberland Valley area which was then part of Lancaster but are now, York Adams and Franklin counties. You will need to look at the early County Histories to see if you can find where these families were coming from in Ireland and then join that County's rootsweb.com net list I will close this an write to you privately Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust. -----Original Message----- From: Terese Mitchell Sent: Sunday, October 13, 2013 7:44 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [AYR] Harris/Herries of Ayrshire, Scotland with Wiley, Douglas, Hamilton, Stewart, Armstrong, Alexander, Steel, Pickens, Calhoun, McCalls, McBay, BUchanan, Crawford, Cunningham, etal Hi Mike, I wonder if there are any Harrises there with you in Australia that have roots in Ayrshire? Or McCalls? We have a DNA Harris group that goes back there very early and on tow of the lines go to Australia I think directly from Ireland, but we don't know who the submitters were so impossible to use the lines. I am keeping an eye out for Boyds. I have not found as many as expected but do see then in the early PA lines and some mention in the Harris Valentine Dunlop book on the PA Harrises that also tie in to Boggs very early. The Harris/Herries line is connected to the border Douglases and others like the Hamiltons, Stewarts, Calhouns, Alexanders, Glens, Scotts, Caldwells, Wallaces, Armstrongs, Cunninghams etc. The Harris line is discussed in a book that is available online as a free google ebook is Colonel George Stuart and Margaret Harris by Robert Stewart. In it is the Mifflintown Document written in 1801 which outlines the descendants of Edward Herries and Flora Douglas of Ayrshire. Especially son Robert Harris who married Dorothy Wylie/Wiley and had seven sons and one daughter. I would love to find out more on Dorothy's family. There are many Wylies by the Harrises as they moved across the United States but we do not have her direct line. The name Gemmil also caught my attention as that surname is also mentioned in the Stewart book. Buchanans are also close and one of the grandchildren of Robert and Dorothy Margaret Harris daughter of John Harris and Grizzel Steel stayed behind and married Andrew Buchanan if that sounds familiar to anyone. Our Harrises which are Group 3 are know to have emigrated about 1730 with the Pickens, Calhouns, and McCalls to Lancaster, PA and migrated outwards. There is a James Harris in Wythe, VA that is connected some way and lived until about 1790 and died at age 110 and was the grandfather of Lt Col James McCall who served inn Abbeville, SC during the Revolution. Would love to exchange info with anyone researching this very interesting group of immigrants. The families stayed as a pack for centuries so I would love to hear from anyone researching any of these lines as I have learned a lot about my own family by looking in their alliance with these families. Or is anyone has suggestions on finding McBays which might be McBee or McBath. Or if anyone else has ancestors in Abbeville, South Carolina or Mecklneburg, North Carolina during the American RevolutionÅ  I also wonder if there is an Ayrshire DNA group that anyone knows about? We have several Group 3 DNA lines now but several unplaces and I hoped maybe the wives' families might help to place the Harrises. Thanks Mike for all the work you do to keep the board active and informational! Terese Mitchell
