    3. Sorry I can no longer use the gateway but found this on freecen pages for 1851: Piece: SCT1851/608 Place: Ayr -Ayrshire Enumeration District: 1 Civil Parish: New Cumnock Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: New Cumnock Folio: 0 Page: 34 Schedule: 152 Address: Pathead BRODIE John Head M M 46 Hawker Dumfries-shire - Dumfries BRODIE Samuel Son U M 11 Hawker Ayrshire - New Cumnock BRODIE James Son U M 7 Ayrshire - New Cumnock So he probably told the enumerator that he was from Dumfries. Perhaps his parents were from Orkney. I notice the original place of birth was "Orkney Shetland" which is a contradiction in terms I think? If useful/possible could someone send this to the gateway? Cheers, Mary

Author: davidmcmillan99 Surnames: McMillan Johnston Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/14431/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My Great Grandfather's brother was Ezekiel McMillan, born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire c 1838/39. He appears in the 1841 census in Park St, Kilmarnock ( Esekiel) and 1851 ( Ezechial or Eziehial) and then disappears off the radar. No Scottish death record post 1855 under any variation of his name or a marriage record. Dilemma is wondering if he died between 1851 and 1855 (pre death records), or if he moved, possibly joined the forces as one of his brothers did, or emigrated as one of his sisters much later did. With such an unusual name he should be trackable, but have not found any lead. His parents were Alexander McMillan and Jean Johnston. Any help welcomed. His parents were 'Unknown'. His wife was Mary BRODIE, maiden name WALLACE, they had these children currently of noted ages : Peter 26y. Mary 24y. John 21y. Samuel 16y. James 13y and William 10y. His date of death was 13 January, time was 9:30pm at High Beig, New Cumnock. Cause of death was Suffocation from Drinking, certified by Thomas Hunter, M.D. who saw the body the same day. He was buried in the Burial Ground of New Cumnock, certified by Grave Digger James Wyllie. Informant was Janet BRODIE, Daughter in Law. 2 witnesses signed as Janet signed with an X. They were Thomas Hunter and John McMillan. I realize an Informant can certainly get information wrong, but its unusual for a man born in the Orkney Islands to be noted on a legal document as being born 'Dumfries'. This man's accent must have been different than that heard locally if he was Orcadian and BRODIE is a name found in Orkney though not commonly. Do you think the Informant was wrong about the birthplace ? A census would help to confirm birthplace. In honour of Remembrance Day, Ancestry is opening up millions of military records to give everyone the chance to journey back in time and discover the war heroes in their family http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-7281757-11582783 Between 08 and 12 November 2013, 3.6 million records will be freely available from four important military collections: WWI Service Records (1914 - 1920) WWII Army Roll of Honour (1939 - 1945) Navy Medal and Roll Awards (1793 - 1972) Victoria Cross Medals (1857 - 2007) Almost every family in the country will have relatives who once served their country, so these records are an excellent source of discovery. Travel back through 100 years of military history to find physical descriptions, next of kin, medals awarded, places served, disciplinary procedures, photos, dates and places of death ? and much more. New WWII collection Ancestry has added new Civilian War Dead records from WWII, which hold the names of 60,000 civilians who perished during the Second World War. People died in their homes, offices, factories, schools and public vehicles during the terrifying bombings and air raids. London was hardest hit so the London Boroughs have lengthy casualty lists, but the collection also covers many other cities, including Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham and York. http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-7281757-11582783 Michael www.mullfamilies.co.uk

HOWEVER, I have connected them to a Tree I have from Don Gemmell in Australia, as his ancestor James Gemmell, emigrated there from Fenwick, Ayrshire in 1858, and settled in the State of Victoria and established quite a prosperous farm. Don relates that there were many families from Fenwick that settled there around the same time. On his own Tree, he has entered your family of Youngs, because Elizabeth Young, the mother, was a sister if his own Great Grandfather James. It appears that she and her entire family emigrated there too sometime after the 1891 Census. The names he lists of the children who also moved to Australia include Tom Young, Andrew Young, Lizzie Young, Nellie Young, Christina Young, and also a Jean Young (I checked on ScotlandsPeople and there was a Jean Young b Fenwick in 1892 who could be her). Don says there was a lar! ge Fenwick settlement. This might explain why you know so litttle about the descendants of this branch of your family! I have an intriguing question that I would like to ask your advice on. These Arnot(t)s married to the Mortons and a Blackwood also had another sister called Agnes named after her mother, Agness McGilchrist. In 1976 my aunts (from New Zealand) visited our family in Scotland and were given a little family history. In Aunty Alisons travel diary she has written "one daughter Agnes married the poet Aliman". Well I have searched the census, looked on ScotlandsPeople for a marriage between them, searched "familysearch" googled Aliman poet and got Al Iman which is a Muslim name, googled Aleman and it's vairations all to no avail. Also no death certs found for her. Can you think of where else I could search for Agnes and Aliman. I initially thought with the name Aliman being quite unusual I would have no difficulty in locating Agnes but..... I have Agnes's OPR birth in April 1828 from Scotlands people and in the 1841 census she is listed as 13 living with her parents in the Parish of Campsie. I can't find her in the 1851 census when she would have been 23. Any thoughts on where I could go from here??? Thanks Jack Kind Regards, Chris in NZ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
