Author: davidmcmillan99 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/14431.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi 51738, thanks for that. yes the info you give on "Ezekiel" is correct. In 1851 he was a Carpet Trader and he disappears thereafter, though interestingly an Ezekiel McMillan, Watchmaker, was named as father on the 1881 marriage record of a Peter McMillan to a Flora McGilvray in Bunessan Mull. This Peter McMillan was born, illegitimately to Jane McMillan, Washer, of 174 Gallowgate, Glasgow on 3rd Sept 1860. No father details given. Jane or Janet's actual surname was McCaffer or McCaffray. My Ezekiel's parents were Alexander McMillan, Carpet Weaver, and Jean Johnston who married in Kilmarnock on 7 Oct 1825. His surname was shown then as Mullen. Alexander McMillan died before 1851 so most frustratingly I cannot establish his parents. George McMillan, a Cartel Weaver, Woollen Weaver was Ezekiel's older brother. He married Catherine Marquise in Kilmarnock in 1857, though was widowed by 1881 and appears in Aberdeen, though goes off the radar thereafter. I had noted Mary Blair who was married to an earlier Ezekiel McMillan, who as you note may have been a brother of my Alexander. Mary McMillan, widow of Ezekiel McMillan, Weaver, died aged 75 at 164 High Street, Ayr, on 25 May 1866. It seems this Ezekiel must have died pre 1855, as again no death record. Appreciated your digging on my behalf. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This Ezekial was a carpet salesman in 1851. See Freecen for Ayrshire 1851 his name on it is EZICHIAL. On the 1841 Freecen Census it is ESEKIEL. Looks like he emigrated after 1860 as no sign of him later and no death in Scotland. He had 10 siblings b 1827-1846 at Park Street, Kilmarnock, where father Alex was a carpet weaver ( b abt 1808 ,died before Apr 1851) .Ezekiel's mother Jean was born about 1806 in Kilmarnock. Alex may be the brother of another Ezekiel born about 1810 who maried Mary BLAIR at Ayr 6th June 1835. On of Ezekiel's brothers George looks like the one in Aberdeen in 1881 a Woollen Weaver born Kilmarnock and a widower. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The surname was sometimes given as Mullen on early (pre 1841) records. The Ezekial Killen / McKillen was a good possibility, but he was born in Ireland. I have tried searching all sorts of variations of both surname and forename. Ezekiel itself may point to a Northern Irish descent, as they were given to using such biblical names.
