Author: kiwibird56 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/14380.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Jack, Firstly, many thanks for all the research you have done for Agnes Arnot born 1828, Campsie. I was gobsmacked at all you had done when I read your post. I am wondering if perhaps Agnes brought shame upon the Donald family by running off with poet Aliman, hence there is no death record for her between the birth of her son in 1857 and the Census in 1861 when husband William put down being a Widower. I have googled Agnes Donald but found no one relevant. I have posted this new info from you on my post on TS as you suggested and on the Dunbartonshire message board which was Agnes's last known location. My Dads cousin Ramsay Arnott lived in Lenzie back in 1976 but he would be near or over 100 now and I have no records of any children for him. Unfortunately I have not been able to trace any living relations in Scotland, so do not have the possibility of getting them interested in family research. Agnes is funnily enough tied to Ayrshire with her Dad John Arnot being born in Beith in 1797 and another family I have in Ayrshire is the Kerr one which came from the New Cummock area of Aryshire, so not sure if connected with your Kerrs. I hope you are enjoying some sunshine in Paisley today Jack. Kind regards, Chris nee Arnott in NZ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [AYR] MUSHET, HAMILTON, ADAM and WALLACE around Kilmarnock
    2. Jenny Blain
    3. Hi all, It's been a while since I last posted here, due to moving to my new house (back in Scotland!), garden work and so forth, though I've been pursuing some other family history lines too. So thought I'd post a bit, particularly as the name WALLACE has been coming up in posts I'm now catching up on. Here's a short summary of my Ayrshire story: Henry MUSHET and Janet DENOVAN (Deniveen etc) came to Ayrshire from Perthshire around 1735. They were briefly in Ochiltree (daughter Janet b. 1735), then Tarbolton (Agnes b. 1738) then from around 1742 in Kilmarnock, where wee Agnes died and there were three further births registered (Agnes 1744, William 1747, James 1750) with one other child born somewhere before the second Agnes. William, ashoemaker, married Jean MURDOCH around 1771 and had various childrenfor whom I've some details, if anybody would like these. James, anailer, married Janet ADAM, also around 1771, and they had 11 children, Henry, Jannet, James, Isobel, William, Archibald, John, Helen, Agnes, Henrietta and Jean. Again, details on request. James son of James the nailer, b. 1776 and also a nailer, married Isabel PRIMROSE in 1798, and I've found seven children born in Kilmarnock. John sonof James, b. 1784 and also a nailer, married Jean HAMILTON in 1802, and their son born in 1804 was baptised James Wallace Mushet. This is where the name 'Wallace' enters the line, and I've no idea where it comes from - or who Jean Hamilton was for that matter. This James Wallace also became an iron-worker and moved to Paisley, then Glasgow, Greenock, back to Glasgow, married twice - he's my g-g-g-grandfatherand I've various things on the family from then on. Various other Mushets from Kilmarnock also moved to Glasgow, and some stayed put. Sorting them out in the censuses is tricky as there are so many Jameses, Johns, and Henries. Sometimes the name becomes 'Musket', and earlier in Perthshire it was sometimes 'Muschet', there being other spellings too. So, posting this in case these names connect with anybody else - if so there may be knowledge we can share. Best, Jenny

    3. I am not on the Ancestry board list, so can someone pass this on please. Would the Kilmarnock Newspapers of the period have any reports of these death (and are they Indexed - somewhere, or would you need the specific Church Session book entry about the person who died before 1855? Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] Sent: Friday, November 15, 2013 5:26 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [AYR] Ezekiel McMillan born Kilmarnock / Ayrshire c 1838/39 This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: davidmcmillan99 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/14431.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi 51738, thanks for that. yes the info you give on "Ezekiel" is correct. In 1851 he was a Carpet Trader and he disappears thereafter, though interestingly an Ezekiel McMillan, Watchmaker, was named as father on the 1881 marriage record of a Peter McMillan to a Flora McGilvray in Bunessan Mull. This Peter McMillan was born, illegitimately to Jane McMillan, Washer, of 174 Gallowgate, Glasgow on 3rd Sept 1860. No father details given. Jane or Janet's actual surname was McCaffer or McCaffray. My Ezekiel's parents were Alexander McMillan, Carpet Weaver, and Jean Johnston who married in Kilmarnock on 7 Oct 1825. His surname was shown then as Mullen. Alexander McMillan died before 1851 so most frustratingly I cannot establish his parents. George McMillan, a Cartel Weaver, Woollen Weaver was Ezekiel's older brother. He married Catherine Marquise in Kilmarnock in 1857, though was widowed by 1881 and appears in Aberdeen, though goes off the radar thereafter. I had noted Mary Blair who was married to an earlier Ezekiel McMillan, who as you note may have been a brother of my Alexander. Mary McMillan, widow of Ezekiel McMillan, Weaver, died aged 75 at 164 High Street, Ayr, on 25 May 1866. It seems this Ezekiel must have died pre 1855, as again no death record. Appreciated your digging on my behalf. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Scotland's People is a great site and you can visit the Burns Centre in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire to access it. The cost is £15 for whole day on the site and I am sure you will get loads of information. Alternatively you can go to the Heritage Centre, Saltcoats, North Ayrshire and access burial record and census information free, however this might take longer to go through the books and reels, etc. You might be able to access Scotlands People there too, not sure of cost. Another web site is freecen which as name infers is free there you can access census records. Drawback here is information on site is put in by volunteers and as you can imagine this will take some time to update, so far I have only been able to get information on Dalry for 1841 Census on this site. Hope this information is useful, if we can help in any other way let us know. Ilene & Jamie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: paisleyjack1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/14380.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Chris, A rather elusive young lady is Agnes Arnot. As on your TalkingScot post I could only find the same possible Agnes in 1851 that Rodeo found, and that is the Campsie born 21yr old at Faifley. Looks like this Agnes married her employer in November 1854 - pity not 1855 or later. So we don't have a MC with her parents' names. This couple had a son William Donald b. Jan 1857 - sadly the wee soul only lived 2 days. He was buried in the Old Kilpatrick Churchyard. But alas, no Lair records to see if there was anyone else buried in the same plot. West Dunbartonshire Cemetery Dept. records only start at 1871. I also asked the OK Church itself but they say no earlier lair records either. Nor the Clydebank Reference library - I tried there too. So seems, at present anyway, there are no lair records for OK cemetery prior to 1871. We can now only hope there's a headstone for wee William with parents' names on it too. I was hoping to at least find the the year of his mother's death. I don't know when I'll be able to visit the graveyard to check - some dry days needed! And as I've no idea of where he is buried it may take a while to search. Also that, if there is a stone, it is still legible after 150 years. As the 1861 census shows his father as a Widower we can only presume this is true. Nothing to point to it not being as such - except difficulty finding a wife's DC! Father William's 1862 DC also says widower - of Agnes Arnott. So if father William truly was a widower in 1861 then Agnes should've died 1857-1861. And you'd expect it to be in the Old Kilpatrick area too. But there is no DC in OK in these five years for his wife Agnes at all. I checked the original OK handwritten index pages for these years. (the Agnes Donald who d.1860 was 81yrs and the widow of a Mr Park, a slater) And no other suitable Agnes Arnot / Donald DC in all of Scotland either. So it's a bit of a mystery just now as to what happened to this Agnes. ------------------ 1851 census. 501. ED 11. p 19. Faifley & C: Old Kilpatrick: Dunbartonshire. Address: Auchinleck House.
