    3. Hello Stuart, >From my knowledge a relay worker and scholar as noted by you would be a child who is working in the coal mine and exactly as it states is a relay worker. That is the moving of coal or ore from one child to another in small quarters where only children were able to access. They also were given shifts called "relays" as many attended school as much as they were able. Even though distressing to read this thought provoking article from The National Archives on children in the Mines, it is educational for all of us that come from coal mining families in Scotland and England and I am sure of great interest to those who have not. "where work of the same kind is carried out by two or more sets of persons working during different periods of the day each of such sets is called a “relay” (and each of such periods is called a “shift”,) http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/education/children-in-the-mines-pack.pdf With best wishes to all during this holiday season, Linda Nordby ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stuart Adam" <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 10, 2013 10:16:39 PM Subject: [AYR] Relay Worker Hi - new to this list - most of my relatives were in Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire. 3. I had a grandfather in Daziel that was listed as relay work and it was on a rail line. One thought Stuart, if his father was a miner, I think I saw that, the mines typically had short rails and that might be the answer. The rail in Dalmellington where another set of grandparents worked had a purpose built "line" Just a thought. If you search a surname you can see where the majority of people with that name lived in 1881 and 1998. In Britain that is - I don't think it includes Ireland. > http://gbnames.publicprofiler.org Best wishes, Mary

    3. Thanks Mary Will certainly keep him in mind. To my understanding, there were quite a few emigrated from Scotland to Ireland in the 1840s, as well as vice versa during the Irish potato famine. George is said to be 70/72 at his death depending on what item I read. I think it is FamilySearch have him as 70 and 72 on RootsIreland. So I am searching anything from 1805, although, as I said, I had only been searching in Ayrshire. It is possible that George may not have been the only member of the family to have emigrated. I will have to spend some time on ancestry on Tuesday, I think. So far I have only found two of George’s children to have emigrated to New Zealand, William Livingstone CHRYSTAL, who has quite a history in Richmond, Christchurch, New Zealand. His descendants had no idea any other CHRYSTAL family came here, until they were informed about my g-grandmother, Louisa Margaret CHRYSTAL. >From Irish Times Ancestry Search Louisa Chrystal , daughter of George Chrystal and Anne Chrystal, was born in Gort, Kiltartan civil parish, Galway around 1849. She didn't marry in Ireland. [the family bible gives Louisa Margaret ROSS ms CHRYSTAL as b. 1850] And from her death certificate Louisa's death certificate gives the following information: d. Oct 1923, aged 73 - years in New Zealand were 45, which means she may have emigrated to New Zealand 1878 aged 28. Her marriage certificate says she married 07 August 1880 aged 30 years. Thank you. 3. Mary Thank you. I am aware there are many spellings of the name, most common found being CRYSTAL/CHRISTALL, and I try to search using either wildcard or soundex. This information is great and I will certainly check them out. I hadn't thought that 'from Ayrshire' might not mean George was born in Ayrshire, I just expected him to have been :) Might have to broaden my searches. I have noted anomalies in the death notices of two sons;: Adam John Charles was youngest son of the late George Chrystal, of 'Ayrshire, Scotland'; and brother of G. L. Chrystal, Roma, Queensland; George Livingstone, Roma, Queensland, was second son of George Chrystal of 'Gort (Co. Galway)'. The sons will have both been born in Galway. James was born in the same decade as your George. It is possible he was born in an adjoining county but came from Ayrshire and therefore was considered born Ayrshire. There's only one other Chrystal in Ayrshire freecen 1851 but he is called George - may be a clue. Agnes McColm may have been a Chrystal - she was born in Maybole. 3. Hi Thanks for this information. I have both George and Robert David, and didn’t have Anne. The eldest child was named William Livingstone CHRYSTAL and the second son was George Livingstone CHRYSTAL. We believe Anne was probably a LIVINGSTONE. We know Robert David belonged to this family, he is on the MI. The children for George and Anne were: William Livingstone b c1845 Gort, Galway Elizabeth b 1846 Ahascragh, Galway George Livngstone b 1848 Ahascragh, Galway Louisa Margaret [sometimes Margaret Louisa and sometimes Margaret] b 1849 Ahascragh, Galway Robert David b 1852 Ahascragh, Galway and one I recently found in the death notices of the NZ Herald Adam John Charles d 1892 in Jerilderie, NSW, Australia DEATHS. New Zealand Herald, Volume XXXIX, Issue 12038, 7 August 1902, Page 4 CHRYSTAL.—On . June 24, at Jerilderie, Adam John Charles, youngest son of the late George Chrystal, of Ayrshire, Scotland; and brother of G. L. Chrystal, Roma, Queensland. I have quite a bit of information about George Livingstone CHRYSTAL and his sons in Roma, Lewis William b 1893 and Robert Livingstone b 1895 Irish Times, December 25, 1915 CHRYSTAL - December 14, 1915 at Roma, Queensland, George Livingstone, second son of George Chrystal of Gort (Co. Galway). I found a tree on mundia with Margaret McColm as wife. She doesn’t mention where George snr was born. I am unsure where to begin to search in Ayrshire for information on George, his date and place of birth, parents and anything else that may be hiding away somewhere. I have checked Scotland’s People to no avail, yet. So I think someone has their George's mixed up.

    3. The memorial inscription, below, is all the information I have that informs me George CHRYSTAL was born in Ayrshire. I know nothing else. George is buried in Gort, Galway, Ireland. First I know of him, was his marriage to Anne LIVINGSTON/E, and further to his marriage [1844] followed by the birth of his children in Ahascragh, Gort, Galway, Ireland. "In memoriam George Chrystal. A native of Ayrshire Scotland. Died 30th May 1881 Aged 72. And Anne his beloved wife Died 12th February 1872 aged 54. Also their son Robert David died 24th April 1872 Aged 20. "Until the Day Dawn" George was manager of Lough Cutra Estate south of Gort around 1846. If anyone has any suggestions of where I can begin to search for George in Ayrshire, I’d very much appreciate it. I have searched many places online including RootsIreland and FamilySearch. The 1841 census didn’t seem to include CHRYSTAL at all. His marriage in 1844 suggests he was living in Ireland prior to that date. Whether his wife, Anne LIVINGSTONE, was Scottish or Irish, I do not know. >From RootsIreland Civil Death Record Name: George Chrystal Date of Death: 29-May-1881 Age: 70 Parish / District: GORT Address: The Square County: Co. 3. Hi Jeni, Here's a possible for you - born 1808! 111/04/1808 CHRYSTAL GEORGE ROBERT CHRYSTAL/HELEN WATSON FR1182 CHILD 4 (FR1182) M BARONY GLASGOW CITY CITY/LANARK 622/00 0050 0030 I don't know whether he'll prove to be a brother of James the minister in Auchinleck. The latter celebrated the marriage my gg-grandparents and was still there in Auchinleck for their Golden Wedding in 1884 so he didn't go to Ireland or NZ! Hope this helps. Cheers, Mary
