    1. [AYR] John Mackay Death Fordyce Banff Scotland
    2. Jo Mackay
    3. HI all-Happy New Year As the start of a new year begins I am tackling my brick wall. I am unable to find his death. I do have a time frame of between 1841-1851. He had a daughter born 24/10/1841 so presuming he is the father he would've been alive in January 1841. Information on the census of 1851 his wife Margaret (nee Russel) is a widow. At the time of death he was a farmer at Auchmithie, Fordyce, Banff, Scotland, this information was listed in his wife's will. John married Margaret on 27/06/1918 at Deskford, Banff, Scotland. I am asking for some kind soul to help me try & find this elusive information. Thank you Jo in Australia

    3. Joy Have you contact both the Burns Centre in Kilmarnock - the East Ayrshire Councils Local Studies Library - and the Local Studies Library at the Carnegie Library in Ayr (town) for the South Ayrshire Council area. You should be able to get their Email address from the Council's website. Did David get any "land grant" when he came to NSW? From his medals he appears to have fought in Spain. My Ancestor, Thomas Boyd of County Kerry, Ireland, fought with the South Gloucestershire Regiment - 61st Regt of Foot - in Spain. In 1826, he came to Sydney with the Royal NSW Veterans Corps and after 7 years service was given a grant of land. However, I am not sure if this system might have applied to individuals who came by themselves or not. Author: annlynn9 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/14445.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The variances in spelling of the surname is no sign that they were illiterate. Especially in the English-speaking world, there was a general lack of consistency in the spelling of names (both personal and place names) even among the educated and even during the 19th century. I have (from the National Archives of Scotland) extracts of documents for a landed Ayrshire family in which the surname was written different ways even for the same individual. Also, you can look at Scottish maps drawn by various 16th-19th century cartographers and often see different spellings for the same place. If you ever get back another couple of generations, I have two 17th-18th century generations of Fergusons in Craig and Millanerdaill [Millenderdale], Ayrshire: First, an Ayrshire sasine [deed] was registered on 1 May 1648 for John Fergussoune/Fergusson of Craig, Ayrshire and his spouse, Janet Lin/Lyne, daughter of Fergus Lin/Lyne of Larg, Wigtownshire. John died 1 October 1667 aged 55; Janet, on 1 October 1689. They left at least two sons: (1) James Ferguson of Craig held lands of Myllanderdill [Millenderdale] in 1698 (presumably since his father's passing in 1667). James married Marion Gemmel and died 1 September 1701 aged 49. (2) Robert Fergusson survived his older brother by at least 13 years, but I'm sorry to say I do not know who, if anyone, he married. In 1714, he was described in a discharge as "Robert Fergusson, brother of deceased James Fergusson of Craig". Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am trying to trace my father's family back to Scotland, and have so far done well, but now I am utterly stuck. I figured that my ancestors were probably an illiterate bunch and so the name Ferguson changed per generation. I know for certain that my ancestors did not go to America, but may have made a trip to Ireland at some time. This is what I have so far; John Ferguson 1781-?, Stewarton, Ayrshire Nancy Miller, 1791, Scotland > John Fergusson 1815 - 1892, Ayr, Ayrshire Cecilia Coleman, 1832 - 1928, Brede, Sussex >> James Ferguson Kathleen B Melville >>> Hubert Ferguson Elsie M Batty >>>> Theo M Ferguson Eileen M Foley (my grandparents) >>>>> Ian G Ferguson Jillian M Fuller (my parents) I'm not including dates and places for James & Kathleen down, because that's not what I need help with. I know that John Ferguson and Nancy Miller had three sons; John, Donald and Neil Fergusson. Any info at all would be fantastic!
