Hello Nuala, Thanks for all this. I don't think Christiana's father was part of my family but I did fall across her yesterday. There were haberdashers in this large family but later and in Yorkshire I think. I'll certainly do some newspaper searching. In the 1841 'my' James is described as a smith and I know he had one brother in Scotland who was a blacksmith. One of his sons was a clock maker and another an apprentice blacksmith. I'll follow up the newspapers and see what I can find. Best wishes, Mary

Mike Boyd Brisbane, aust. -----Original Message----- From: Mary Paton Sent: Tuesday, February 18, 2014 5:01 AM To: [email protected] ; [email protected] Subject: [AYR] MORRISON question Hello Meg, I don't know whether you'll be able to help me but do you have anything on my Morrison family? James Morrison was born 1778 to James Morrison and Anne Brown. From a letter written (undated) to someone in my family in Ayrshire (probably my gg-grandfather Ronald Morrison) whom he called "Uncle". The writer, William Morrison who was living in London, described himself as the son of James Morrison of Bristol. In consequence of this I eventually found a James Morrison on the 1841 in Bristol, aged 80 (which would be OK rounded for the 1841). He died 1848: Deaths Dec 1848 Morrison James Clifton 11 223 Unfortunately even if I got his English death certificate it wouldn't tell me who his parents were (which of course a Scottish one would). Do you have access to anything that would tell me more about him? On the 1841 he has a son William aged 12 which fits with the letter being written in the 1860s-1880s. He also mentioned 'Aunt Margaret' who had two daughters of Uncle Matthew living with her. It is not clear when or what their surname was by this time. James and Ronald had a sister Margaret born 1790 but I have never found an Uncle Matthew. Don't worry if you have nothing but I thought it worth a try. Many thanks, Mary

Her maiden name was her legal name throughout her life. Usually in the census records, she would be listed with her husband's surname, but it was not unknown to find a woman listed under her maiden name. That said, by the time of the 1861 census, it was a very rare occurrence outside of the court, birth, marriage, and death records. Bridget is identified as the daughter-in-law of the head of the house, so is married to Michael. Jo-Ann Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Thank you Loretta I found Gowanlea, Landside and Hawhill in my current Ordnance map. These are now marked as farms, so I would assume that they part of the Boyd of Pitcon lands. I think from George Robertson's book, it might have even been called the Barony of Boyd. I can only conclude that these 6 families are part of the Boyds of Pitcon. So this be an interesting project to be able to trace them back the known Boyds of Pitcon. Does this page show who the rent was paid to?
