I recently asked someone if they knew which Clans had helped Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314? It was suggested that I should read Robert Bruce & The Community of the Realm of Scotland, Geoffrey Barrow, 1988, or one of the many works on the king (which titles were not given). Has anyone member read the above book and does it list or name those Clans that supported Bruce at Bannockburn? I have been trying to about eight years to find this list. I have visited the Tourist Office at Bannockburn twice, and their answer is only to give the three other Division Commanders besides Bruce. I have also visited the Stirling Library twice in this time and they did not have any publication that might tell who the 15,000 were that supported The Bruce. It would be good to have this list of other Clans and to see if in later generations if there were any marriages between these Clans and the Boyds. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS 62
Murray, I love hearing old family legends. There've been a few in my own family, which were intriguing and fun to chase down. However, surnames began coming into use in Scotland not many years after the Norman Conquest, which was in 1066 A.D. One has only to look at the Ragman Roll to see countless surnames in Scotland in 1296. Some examples are: Robert Boyt [Boyd], Thomas Cambel [Campbell], Mac Gilcrist, Michel Lardiner, Gilcrist More and Renaud More [Moore], Phelipp Stiward [Philip Stewart], Aleyn Waleys [Allen Wallace], Richard Wer [Weir]. Countless other signatories to the roll were still using the "de". Some examples of those are: Johan de Crauford, Huwe de Kelshou [Hugh de Kelso], Wautier [Walter] de Lynne, Thomas de Wynton, etc. Concerning Lynnes, four successive generations of that family in Peeblesshire are proven by peerage accounts and other sources to begin with Robert de Lyne who held lands of Lyne, Hopprew, and Locherworth before 1165 A.D. Legend has it that the clan chief, Duncan, asked The Bruce whether he could name his son after him and the family name Robertson became the earliest surname in Scotland. Another legend suggests that the clan was late to arrive at Bannockburn, and although few in number they arrived with lots of noise and were instrumental in the English troops losing heart and thus the battle. I am trying to locate the birth, marriage and death of a Mary Kerr probably from Ayrshire, although the marriage and death may have taken place in India or elsewhere. She was apparently the wife of James Innes Fullarton, a son of Stewart Murray Fullarton of Bartonholm. Marriage and death documents in Australia state that Robert Russell Fullarton was the son of Mary Kerr and James Fullarton; these documents also state that Robert was born in Irvine in 1828. James was an officer in the army of the East India Company in Madras. Mary Anne Fullarton, wife of Major James Fullarton is recorded as dying in Madras on 4th June 1841 "in her 23rd year". This may be the Mary, mother of Robert although if so perhaps the age stated was mistranscribed. In the 1841 Census [1841 595/00 005/00 031] a 13 year old Robert Fullarton is recorded on High Street with Jean Kerr 50, Elizabeth Kerr 35 and Jean Kerr 15. Can anyone verify or deny a connection between Robert and Mary in this case? Cheers Peter Melbourne

In my trip to Scotland in October 2012, I stayed at Woodlea Hotel, 23 York Place, Perth (Email [email protected]) pho (01738) 621744 It is directly opposite the Perth City Library – which has a very good local studies section. It is also quite central to go to Dundee, St Andrews, Stirling, Scone. (I assume that buses go from Perth to these place, but I only took the bus to Glasgow. While Dundee and Stirling are on the rail lines) And you can spend a good day walking around Perth itself. >From this hotel, go about 50 yard left and then turn right and go about 300 yards to the bus station or a further 200 yards and you get the rail station. The one draw back is that there is only about 4 car parking space out the front. So it is good for those that wish to drive and those that do not and it is a good central place to see this historic part of Scotland for a few days Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS Brisbane, Aust.

Good morning Wonder if anybody knows a Leslie KIRK (distant cousin) who used to reside at 14 High Street Kilbirnie and would be willing/able to give me a contact e-mail address for him. He was married to a Marion FINDLAY in Largs in 1983 and that was their address then (she lived, at that time i.e. prior to marriage at 14 Blairlands Drive Dalry). Do not, as yet, have any children for them. Many thanks. Ewan

Hi do you have Jeans 1881 birth certificate ? if there is a note in the left hand column it usually means there is more information in the Register of Corrected Entries that may give further information about the father. You could also check the Kirk Session records to see if Jane Herron had been told off by the kirk.
