Still after 11 years of going to the Northern Hemisphere, I still get the direction wrong as to which way the shadows fall to work out which is North and South. Will have to do better this year. This is to advise Ayrshire list members that these Games will be held this weekend. So if you are in Northern California - or a little further away - and would like to see some Scottish Culture and sports go along. It is in a "rural" area just south of Sacramento. I visited these Games a few years ago and there were about 40-50 Clan tents, but I can't recall if there were any other Ayrshire Clans represented at these Games or not. If your Clan does not have a tent, I am sure the folk at the Boyd tent will welcome you and give you a chance to rest your feet and talk about Ayrshire history. The Boyds married into many of the other Ayrshire families - such as marrying the First Lord Montgomery, the First Lord Boyd granddaughter married the third Earl of Glencairn of the Cunningham family, while another granddaughter married John Muir of Rowallan in 1494 to name three connections I also know that we had connections to the Kerrs, Blairs, Crawfords, Campbells, Wallance, Fullarton and Kennedy's to name some other Clan linkages in Ayrshire Our President hosts this tent, and is quite knowledgeable about most thinks Scottish and she went to the Clans Gathering in 2009 at Edinburgh. Have an enjoyable weekend Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust. -----Original Message----- From: Lauren Boyd McLachlan via Sent: Monday, April 20, 2015 12:00 PM To: Boyd List ; Clan Boyd (Scottish Clan list) Subject: [BOYD] House of Boyd to host tent at Sacramento Valley Caledonia Club Games in Woodland, CA this weekend -- Apro; 25th & 26th 2015 Confido! Dear Cousins: Come and join us at the games this next weekend, April 25th and 26th (Saturday and Sunday)! The first big one of the year, we will be getting back in the swing of things. You will find us in spaces 33 & 34 next to Clan MacLachlan, Clan Bell, SAMS and Mother Lode Scots. This is my 20th consecutive year (yes my Anniversary games!) hosting the tent at the Sacramento Valley Caledonian Club's Scottish Games and Festival In 1996 at my very first event, they were held in Roseville, California. Little did I realize that by 2009, I would be living in that same City. These games have been held in Woodland at the Yolo County Fairgrounds for so many years that they are referred to as "the Woodland Games" by those familiar with them.. Saturday night, the event has a ceilidh which is one of my favorites.GREAT music! You will also find some things going on in the campground. I'll not be camping as I live close enough to drive back and forth each night. oh...before I forget... I also wear another volunteer hat. I must run the Scottish Information Society meeting on Sunday morning at 10 at our tent. ( We are comprised of all the volunteers for the games. There is a delegate for each clan/society.) Read more about this 139th year event at http://sacramentoscotgames.org/ Great Entertainment: http://sacramentoscotgames.org/entertainers/entertainers/ http://sacramentoscotgames.org/schedule/fairgrounds-map/ I am looking forward to seeing all who can attend! I was recently advised that the above Games are being help over the weekend of 2-3 May 2015. I was not given the venue or the times, but as this is a “small” town, I expect it is not too hard to find where the venue is in Glen Innes. So are there any Boyds on this list living in the New England or Southern Queensland that have been to these Games? For the Ayrshire list – do any of the Ayrshire clans/Families have a tent at this event? Thank you Mike Boyd

This was the first time that I have been to these Games.. They had about 15 or so pipe bands from what I could hear on the Clan row. Despite a little Scottish mist, it was quite a good day. This area of NSW did not open up until about the early 1840’s when timber getters first discovered the River that Captain Cook and other early explorers had missed. In the town they have pained their electric poles in various Clan Tartans, but it was a little bit hard to both read and remember which clans were represented to see if any came from Ayrshire. Unfortunately, I did not have any Ayrshire Clans come past my tent, but I am sure that I will find some next year when I go. (I assume that this will held on Easter Saturday in 2016). Thank you. This is to advise any members of these lists who might live in the Grafton to Lismore area of NSW, that on Saturday 4 April 2015, at the Maclean Showgrounds, will be held the annual Highland Games. Clan Boyd will have a tent and I will be quite happy to take any Boyd or Boyd descendant family trees to add to the other 750 Boyd Family Chapters in “Clan Boyd of Scotland”. Since, I have been going to Northern Ireland nearly every year since 2004 and to Scotland since 2005 to do research in various Libraries for known Boyd families, I can provide advice and contacts that people might be able to use to further their own family tree research. I can also provide some tourist advise on Northern Ireland and the Lowlands of Scotland, especially, Ayrshire, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, etc I will also try to make a list of those from other Clans in Ayrshire, so these names can be sent to their Clan Society. So come along to the Boyd tent and make yourself known. I know that there are several other Clan tents including Campbell but I am not sure if this is the Argyllshire part or the Ayrshire part of the Campbells. Thank you Mike Boyd Chairman Historical Committee House of Boyd Society Brisbane, Aust.
This coming Saturday, 4 April 2015, I will be hosting a Boyd tent at the Maclean, Clarence River, NSW Highland Games. I would like to be able to hand out a contact list of other Ayrshire Clan/Families I know that the following list have connections with various Branches of the Boyds - Montgomery; - Blair; - Kerr; - Crawford; - Cunningham; - Muir; - Wallace; - Kennedy; I think that most of these have their own “Named” net list at Rootsweb.com but I will also like to include a column for contacting these AND ANY OTHER AYRSHIRE BASED FAMILY SOCIETIES, so I can put them onto a page and had them out to any visitors, so that they know whom to contact when they find any of these names marrying into their own family tree. I would like a name, Society name, postal address and Email address please. I would be quite happy to include any Ayrshire family even if they have no current Boyd connections. I will also send this to the House of Boyd convenors, mainly in the USA, so they can hand them out at Games they might have tents at Scottish Games. Mike Boyd Chairman Historical Committee House of Boyd Society
G'day. There were many people of Scot's ancestry in Northern Island who moved back to Scotland as a result of the famine, thus putting pressure on the population. I recall being amazed at the number of "Irish" showing on the census of 1851 for Maybole, Ayrshire. My FOX family moved from Guilford to Glasgow c1853, and one of their children on to NZ in 1876. I can also recall reading that potato exports from Ireland to England were maintained despite those growing them starving to death. I think that most of us have heard about the Irish Potato famine if the late 1840’s. However, in my “grey cell’s” I think I have heard that Scotland was also affected but do not know which areas were affected. So does anyone know which Scottish Counties were affected by the Potato famine and over what period? I have a Boyd family from opposite Fort William arrive in Australia in 1852 – and had the thought this may have been due to a famine. I also know form a friend in Fenwick that a great number of people form that village moved to a town in Victoria. But I do not know recall when this migration started. Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust.

Hello Mike, Potato crops failed in Scotland but it didn't cause the same devastating famine as in Ireland where dependance on the potato was total in about 1/3 of the population. I think the surrounding areas in Scotland were able to assist in a way they couldn't or didn't in Ireland. Have a look at this - I've only skimmed through it. http://www.history.com/news/after-168-years-potato-famine-mystery-solved So it is possible your ancestors were affected by it but of course there was gold drawing folks to Australia at a great rate at the same time. Ian thinks those most severely affected by the famine went to America. Cheers, Mary
