    3. Greetings Listers I have the following information, from the Dunlop PRs, regarding a couple of my ANDREW ancestors. Thomas Andrew in the parish of Dunlop, son lawful to Robert Andrew in Waterland and Agnes Smith, daughter lawful to Robert Smith in Easter Caldwell in this parish, deceased, gave in their names for Proclamation in order to Marriage July 28th having given 18 pence to ye poor which was held in ye Clerk's hand. Two places are mentioned - Waterland and Easter Caldwell, the latter of which seems definitely to be in Dunlop Parish. I've tried googling for these places, but to no avail. Can anyone tell me anything about either or both please? 3. Hello, Try googling Lugton. Lugton Water seems to form the boundary between the parishes of Dunlop and Beith. Waterlands and Waterland Mill appear on old maps along Lugton Water in the very northern part of Dunlop parish. Here is a link to an old map (1832) in the National Library of Scotland http://maps.nls.uk/atlas/thomson/547.html Waterlands can be found on the upper left section and Caldwell on the upper right. 3. Margaret Thanks for your reply. I was on Mull myself in Sep last year. According to the Ancestry link I gave, John who died in NZ is s/o James/Janet Lyon born 1836 Fenwick, but he's not the one i'm looking for. John who married Margaret Wallace died 1922 Islay, if the TribalPages link is correct (he was in Kilninian parish 1911 Census). I'm hoping someone on the Ayr list will recognise this John (and wife Margaret), and provide the necessary parental information. They also had a daughter Henrietta Carruthers Dunlop 1880-1911. Freecen gives two Johns below, and he's likely to be one of these (both to parents James/Janet). 1841. 3. I'm always on the lookout for Isle of Mull "strays", and the two following "imports" from Ayrshire (Dunlop siblings) died 1904 Mull (both on same death record). John George Dunlop 1885 and Mary Goodall Dunlop 1877 were born to parents John / Margaret Wallace. John / Margaret married 29 Oct 1862 Stewarton, Ayrshire, and i'm hoping a lister can let me know their respective parents. Margaret I suspect is d/o James/Mary Stevenson but this needs confirming (she died prior to 1904). John Dunlop I had deduced as s/o John / Janet Lyon, but according to an Ancestry entry, that John died 1909 NZ http://www.ancestry.co.uk/genealogy/records/john-dunlop_90243022 The John i'm looking for is probably the one who died 1922 Kilarrow, Islay http://www.tribalpages.com/tribe/familytree?uid=sandersonbreeze&surname=DUNLOP It would be greatly appreciated if I could be informed of John Dunlop / Margaret Wallace's respective parents per their 1862 marriage (or BDM sent to me offlist). As a pensioner, I simply cannot afford to purchase every record. Michael (webmaster) http://www.mullfamilies.co.uk/

    1. [AYR] "Remission under the great seal, in favour of Robert, Lord Boyd, Thomas, Master of Boyd, and others for Their participation in the Battle of Langside." [Battle of Langside 13 May 1568],
    2. Mike Boyd via
    3. The following Remission of 1571 – as a result of the Battle of Langside – is the fist line I have seen a list of CADET BRANCHES OF THE BOYDS. Boyd Family History says that the Boyd (and I assume the other families listed) were Mary Queen of Scots bodyguard. Members of the Ayrshire list will notice that a number of other Families are listed in this Remission. I have yet to see if any of these “other” families married into any of these Cadets of Clan Boyd. For the Boyd list, we need to identify these locations. - Baddinhaith is Badenheath in East Dumbartonshire - Pinkill is Penkill just outside of Girvan, South Ayrshire - Trochrig was part of the Estate Penkill and given to Adam Boyd’s second son who became the first Laird of Trochrig - Portincross is Portincross Castle west of West Kilbride - Petcon is Pitcon just norht of Dalry, North Ayrshire - Boyneschaw is Bonshaw just west of Stewarton, North Ayrshire - Kipps is about 6 kms south of Linlithgow and this family are said to be a Branch from the Badenheath Cadet Branch - the other Boyd locations I am not too sure about and I will need assistance to find their location and modern spelling. The document below might be regarded as a “historic” document and not the place you might THINK TO LOOK FOR YOUR FAMILY, so I hope that people cam make connections to earlier branches of their family. Thank you Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust. "Remission under the great seal, in favour of Robert, Lord Boyd, Thomas, Master of Boyd, and others for Their participation in the Battle of Langside." 3. The above are my gt gt grandparents and according to civil records both were interred "interred in the Maybole Churchyard, as certified by William Cunningham, sexton" As far as I can ascertain they have no headstone, which I find a little surprising. At the time of his death James was the "Ruling Church Elder of the West church in Maybole", which from memory has/had no graveyard. During my brief visit to Maybole in 2010 the only cemetery I recall seeing seemed not attached to a church and had very few standing headstones. Are there other churchyards in Maybole that eluded me? Would records exist of where sexton Cunningham operated and if so would burial records, by plot, exist? Murray Reid New Zealand

    3. A few days ago I made an inquiry about this mill but mispelt as Craigie. I have now discovered there is a "Craig Mill" on Caaf Water near Dalry, which is some distance from Alloway. Apparently there is a water fall there known as "Lynns Spout" and there are the remains of a mill there. Is that what I am looking for? I have also learnt that "Dyesters" mills did in fact grind dye materials much like grain mills did. I have a lot to learn and would appreciate help. Murray NZ

It is interesting that two of the their sons migrated to Pittsburgh, PA and Johnstown, PA. I do not know when this migration took place – but assume in the later half of the 1800’s. (So this migration path mihgt have bene followed by other Glasgow, Renfreshire and Ayrshire families into the Steel Industry in PA.) If you belong to any of these children, I would like to hear form you please. Thank you Mike Boyd

    1. [AYR] Occupation Dyster. Thomas Reid 1667 - 1733

    3. My ancestors, Thomas Reid and Sarah Findlay, are buried in the "Old Kirk" graveyard at Alloway with a prominent and unusual headstone that has on its obverse side the symbol of the "Dysters". Thomas is described as "Dyster of Craigie Mill". It would appear that his son William inherited the mill. I would appreciate advice on the Dyeing industry of that era and any possible info on the mill please. Location, how it worked, what fabrics etc I equate a mill as a place to grind grain, often powered by a water wheel. For dyeing would I be right to assume there was a water wheel but its use would have been to lift water from a stream for the dyeing process. Thanks Murray Reid New Zealand
