Five Hunter brothers and their widowed mother immigrated from just outside Londonderry during the 1750s(where their father had been a well-known drapery merchant on the "Bleach-Green Farm." Their paternal grandfather had immigrated to Ulster from the Glasgow area during the plantation. I have worked with genealogists in Londonderry without results. Can you recommend a resource or professional that could help me in Scotlant to help link the family to Ireland and complete the lineage. I would assume that the paternal grandfather would have been in the linen trade as well. 3. Hi Alana, Thanks for your message. That is exciting - so you and I must be either 4th or 5th cousins once removed! Probably 4th. We have to go out shortly but I'll search out more Goldie info later. That solves one problem as someone (in Australia I think) said Ann married Arthur Devlin whereas I had a different husband - so she had two. But it is going to take me a while to find the correspondence. I think James Morton was Ann's first husband? Where did you find Eliza attached to Douglas' name? She appears on all censuses as Douglas and had a sister Elizabeth - my gg-grandmother? I have often puzzled about Douglas name. Did you manage to find any brothers for these four daughters? Ann Andrew's sister Elisabeth married Robert Stewart and their son Robert Reid Stewart married my gg-aunt Janet Templeton. More later. Best wishes, Mary

    3. My Goldies just have to fit in somewhere. Hugh Goldie married Elizabeth Kay 1786 Auchinleck. They had 4 daughters: Douglas (b 1787) married William Andrew about 1814 Jean (b 1789) - I cannot discover what happened to her as there were two or more Jean Goldies. Margaret (b 1804) married William McKie in 1830 Elizabeth (b 1809) married Mungo McKie in 1833 (my gg-grandparents) The last two were brothers marrying sisters. There was also a George Goldie who married Hannah Kay in 1859 and she may have been Elizabeth Kay's sister and he Hugh's brother. With those four girls born 1787, 1789, 1804, 1809 - surely there must have been some boys in between to carry on the name? Still hoping! Mary

    3. Thanks to all who replied on line and off line to this query. Yes It was on my map, but I only looked at Great Cumbrae Island and around - mile or two around Largs. Constablewood was over the page on the next fold. It is between two "old" Boyd estates of Tourgill and Noddsdale, but on the west side of Brisbane Waters. So I assume it was part of the Brisbane family estates. Can anyone confirm this please? Does anyone have access to a copy of Pont, to see if it is an entry there, to see if it gives any family tree data. 3. Hi Mary, Hugh Goldie and Elizabeth Kay are my 4x great grandparents. Their daughter Douglas (actually it is Eliza Douglas) and her husband are my 3x great grandparents. They had at least 2 children that I know of so far, Thomas Andrew b. about 1822 in Auchinleck and Ann Andrew (my 2x great grandmother) b. Feb. 28, 1829 in Auchinleck. Douglas died on April 21, 1861 in Auchinleck and William Andrew died on April 5, 1888 in Auchinleck (he was born in Mauchline about 1794). Their daughter Ann's second husband was Arthur Devlin who she married on Nov. 12, 1858 in Auchinleck. I am descended from Ann and her husband Arthur. Would love to compare more. 3. Mike, I have access to Pont and am sorry to say he does not mention Constablewood or Constable Wood. In George Robertson's "Topographical Description of Ayrshire: More Particularly of Cunninghame" (1820) is a chart entitled "Valued Rents Scots of the Parish of Largs," which includes Nodesdale and, immediately preceding that, Constable Ward, & West Grass Yards. At the time, unfortunately, the proprietors of Constable Ward were the heirs of James Wilson. There is no date attached to the chart, so I assume it is from the period in which the book was published. Going back to Pont, he does say this ... "... 'Yard' appears to be a measure, or quantity of land, in law phrase. It varied however, in different parts of the country, from 15 acres up to as much as 30 or 40. It is of very frequent occurrence in topography in various quarters- in the neighbourhood of Largs, besides this [Annat-Zaird of the Skelmorly Estate], there is 'Grass-yards, Constableyards,' &c." I've checked several similar volumes and found nothing, but there is this tombstone inscription from a rootsweb message: John FINNIE, b 1692, d Apr 1778; Proprietor of Constablewood, Largs Erected by his son, James I know this doesn't exactly answer your questions about Constablewood and the Boyds but thought you might want it anyway. 2. Mike Boyd
    3. I have been given these two statement about the marraige of Ann Boyd and William Finnie:- "William Finnie, Hammerman in Kilmarnock his 2nd marriage and Ann Boyd in the parish of Ardrossan were booked on Saturday April 13th 1745 and consigned eight marks of penalty and after orderly proclamation three several Sabbath days were married at Ardrossan on Tuesday April 30 - 1745 by Mr. Dow Minister there. (Kilmarnock entry) - Frame No 1320 "William Finnie in the Parish of Kilmarnock and Ann Boyd in this parish had given in their names for proclamation in order for marriage this 18th day of April" (Ardrossan entry) - Frame No 267 This would suggest that William and Ann were married in a church in Ardrosson, but does not tell us anything about Ann's parents or where they were living in 1745. While it is known that William was married previously to Mary Wilson on 3 November 1736 and they had three known children. Would anyone have any details on which Boyd family that Ann Boyd of "Ardrossan" might have come from. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
