In light of Bill's response of being a freestone cutter...upon closer inspection, do the words actually say FREE STONE in stead of FREE STOW ??? There are enough parts in the last letter for it. There were two McCormick families having children, either of which might have been Jane's parents (posting says Jane was born in Troon circa 1901). The Herald points to one of these families moving to New York, viz: McCormack Thomas 16 12 1966 Woodside, New York. D 92yrs. born in Troon, husband of Catherine Daniel, father of Elizabeth, George, Thomas, Cathy McCormack & Anne Breslin, grandchilden & great granchildren You say you found a birth on Scottish people for Francis Beattie. (can't enter the whole middle name) An image of the birth certificate is available to download which would give you the names of his parents. Alternatively you could search SP for the marriage which should be outside the 75 year limit. Irene Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Could you, Jim, or anyone else tell me what "Delations" mean, in regard to the Kirk Sessions? Meg
My 2nd grt grandfather's occupation is listed in the 1841 Scotland census, residing in Galston, Ayrshire, as "Free Stow". Try as I might, I am unable to locate the meaning of this profession. The only description I have found is for a "Stowyer", which refers to someone packing away fishing nets. Can anyone shed any light? Thank you for any suggestions.
Hi Meg, I believe that "delations" were formal charges or accusations of wrongdoing against a parishioner that were laid before the elders, based on information provided by witnesses. The "delated" sinner was expected to appear and answer the charge, and if found guilty by the kirksession, pay a fine, perform a public penance of some kind, and/or acknowledge its truth. What threw me off was the death cert of my 2x G Grandmother. It was a red herring, to cut a long story short I assumed the woman named on her death cert was her natural mother. Her natural mother was called Catherine and not Margaret. So her cert shows both women her stepmother (Margaret McLean nee Blyth) and her natural mother's surname (m.s Sutherland). I do have distant relatives living in Ayrshire though, maybe have to dig out info on them at a later date. Thanks though for replying. I am using 2010 and love the searches. I have over 1600 names I am managing. Much better I think than 2008 version. The cutting was seen by his nieces in Kilmarnock (daughters of his brother James). My mother Mary was his sister. William was married to Agnes and had a daughter Janette. I do not know what happened to them. I knew that he received an MC and I also have the photo of him receiving it from Montgomery. I can give you the New Zealand information on the descendents of Dugald Blew/Blue and Elizabeth Blew/Blue of West Kilbride. They had 7 children, one of whom was Hugh, who had a son Robert Wilson BLUE who went to the USA (your relation). The also had a son Daniel Blue, who is my direct descendent. He had four children, one of whom was John Blue, my great great grandfather who came to NZ in 1863 aged 20. Wilson features very strongly in both our families, as the two brothers Daniel and Hugh married a Wilson. Daniel Blue married Janet Wilson (29.22.1839), and Hugh Blue married Elizabeth Wilson (circa 1835). Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
