I am working on this family tree for my husband's first cousin - Diane Murray. She is married to Guy Murry. We all live in a small community near Ishpeming, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. I am working on four different family trees right now so I haven't been able to get any further than Gordon Murray married to Ann Dempster. Guy is related to Gordon through his son John. Originally I was given a hand written sheet by some family member that listed Ann MacCrae as the wife but Guy remembered someone talking about Ann Dempster. I never did find out where the MacCrae name came from. Please email me directly at gwing@chartermi.net with any specific questions and I will try to help. The majority of my knowledge is from John's line however. I will talk to Guy. I am sure he would love to hear from you! My ggg grandmother Jean Morton daughter of George Morton and possibly Jean Wotherspoon/Wedderspoon/Witherspoon was married to Thomas Wyllie in April 1806 at Craigie by Kilmarncok. I was browsing the IGI batch numbers (M115842)and see there are 20 or 30 Mortons who married there. I'd be interested in making connections with anybody with Morton connections who married at Criagie by Kilmarnock. We share relatives. My gg grandparents were Thomas Wyllie and Jean Morton. Their daughter Jean Wyllie born Stewarton 1821??? married James Whiteford and emigrated to Australia in 1852. I have Thomas's inventory which I sourced from ScotslandsPeople and found the first mention of George as the oldest son. I had just started researching this family and got stuck on Gordon Murray, used a new search engine and found this thread! My husband's ancestors are Gordon Murray and Ann Dempster through their daughter Janet who married John McClain. I had found a Gordon in the 1851 census, but wasn't sure it was the right one since Janet was not in the household. I did find a Janet Murray of the approximate age working as a servant and also one as a scholar in the home of her grandparents, but have not established if one of these is the correct Janet. Also didn't find anything in 1841, but now I know why. Is the information you posted from your family or someone else's database? I would love to find out more about this family. I haven't entered what I have found yet in my database so what I can give you is in a more informal form. Janet (sometimes called Jane)Murray married John McLean in Dalmellington Parish, Ayr 21 Jan 1855. He was 25, a miner, born in Longhill? (his subsequent records say Ireland), residence Craigmark, Dalmellington. His parents Francis McLean, farmer, deceased and Mary McGarry McLean. Janet was 19, residence Dalmellington and a servant. Her parents listed as Gordon Murray, miner and Ann Dempster Murray. They were married by a Roman Catholic clergyman. Janet and John McLean's daughter Grace was born 18 May 1875 in Clippens Square, Parish of Kilbarchen, Renfrew. I found this family in the 1861 and 1881 census records, but not in the 1871 census. In 1861 the family is in Whitburn, West Lothian and John is an ironstone miner. In 1881 they are back in Kilbarchen where John is a coal miner. In 1882 John McLean, Janet, children Ann, John, Jennie, May and Grace emigrated to Westmoreland County Pennsylvania. Older children Alexander and Francis emigrated on a different ship the same year. Grace McLean, whose name had become McClain, married John J. McDonald, also an emigrant, from Shotts Iron Works, Lanarkshire, Scotland, in Westmoreland County PA. These two people are my husband's great-grandparents. Hope to hear from you as I would like to know more about his family. Thanks for posting all that information. Hi Listers... In my NIVEN branch, Baillie William Niven 1762-1844, a first cousin 5 times removed to me, was said to be a close friend of Burns...follows is an exerpt from an ASAFHS Journal - Spring 1999 write up: "William Niven was a close friend of Burns while they attended Hugh Rodger's School in Kirkoswald in 1776. In fact the three earliest recorded letters of Burns were written to him ..." I have found my notes from the Dailly OPR film and agree that it does refer to Carsfairn but I have assumed that meant the Parish she then resided in. Jacobina's birth is there too, daughter lawful to John Riggs born March 11th baptised 13th 1764. There are some references to Hazle children in my transcriptions so if you are interested just say and I will get them to you. (I see there is provision for attachments on this list; have you ever tried it? I have the information in a Word file.) It's a pity I didn't take the extra time to get a few photocopies whilst I had the film, but I was in a hurry. Jacobina's death in 1807 is also there. It certainly looks like a match, can't be too many people with the name Jacobina Riggs. I have downloaded the OPR record from Scotland's People Ref:585/0010 0499 and it states "William Hazle in this parish and Jacobina Riggs in parish of Carsfairn gave in their names in order to marriage Feb 28th were thrice proclaimed and married March 18th." However the page is headed up Marriages 1789, but the Scotland's People header is for 13.03.1789. As for the birth, the info I had was from a match on Genes reunited and it is unconfirmed, so I would say that your's would be correct. I have also been given details from a Death Certificate, but I don't have the original ref no. " Jacobina Riggs, wife of William Hazle died May 6th, aged about 50 years. Dropsy" Regards, Jeni. I have Jacobina as the sister of Jean Riggs (b1753-d1838)and daughter of John Riggs and Sara McTire. And I also have her as marrying William Hazle on 18 March 1789. (I will check my sources about the day. It could be a typo.) The big difference I have is my records show her as being born in Dailly in 1764, not Carsfairn 1757. I am sure we are talking about the same Jacobina but I will have to do a lot of checking; it's quite a while since I worked on that line. Somewhere there is a pair of wires crossed. Jean Riggs married Andrew McCrindle then my line descends through Wallace, Withers and Gray. Regards Jim Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
