> Hello Michael Helen Gemmell married James Wyl[l]ie 1778 not sure if it was Fenwick or Stewarton, James was one of the Wylies from Mosside, Helen and James are my 4 x g grandparents. I dont have any confirmed information about John Gemmell but they lived in the Kirktown part of Fenwick village. There are a lot of Gemmells of various spellings in the parish of Fenwick. James Wylie and Helen Gemmell had 13 children, the 7th child Alexander married Agnes Riddell I think in Stewarton, and their daughter Agnes Riddell Wylie married William White and set sail for Dunedin, New Zealand in 1849. The Wylies had a bonnet mill in Stewarton, Alexander died between 1834 and 1841, and Agnes took over the running of the mill. Hope this is of help Margaret NZ > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "michael paton" <voyager87@gmail.com> > To: <AYRSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Saturday, January 30, 2010 8:35 AM > Subject: [AYR] GEMMIL, GEMMEL, GEMMELL, PATON, CLARKSON > > >> JAMES GEMMELL attended the birth of one child of SAMUEL PATON and MARY >> CLARKSON (my family). >> MARY PATON b 27/12/1814 Witnesses were WILLIAM CLARKSON and JAMES >> GAMMELL. >> >> I felt that a witness to a birth should be some sort of relative and >> searched.I found JAMES GAMMEL b1763 in Fenwick, Ayr first and then "JOHN >> GEMMIL married JANET PATON in 22/03/1747 in Fenwick, Ayr". Hi John, Have just found out (along with two other people looking for Mushets) who Janet Adam was who married James Mushet. Her father was James Adam, bonnetmaker in Kilmarnock - she was the third child of his second marriage, to Margaret Houston, in 1742, though her birth (1747) shows her mother's name as Margaret Johnston! Janet had two elder siblings, John born 1744 and a first child for whom I haven't found a record. James Adam was born around 1684 - from his death record in 1756 aged 72 - and I'm pretty sure his father was John Adam, bonnetmaker in Kilmarnock. There were nine children from James's first marriage but few survived to adulthood. John Adam, bonnetmaker, died in 1731 aged 79, so was born around 1652. So - some more pieces of the puzzle! But alas I've no clues on Margaret Houston. All best, Jenny PS I've been doing some 'working forwards' as well so will keep an eye open for Boyles, and also check the Kilmarnock register entries I have in case there's anybody who fits in there.
JAMES GEMMELL attended the birth of one child of SAMUEL PATON and MARY CLARKSON (my family). MARY PATON b 27/12/1814 Witnesses were WILLIAM CLARKSON and JAMES GAMMELL. I felt that a witness to a birth should be some sort of relative and searched.I found JAMES GAMMEL b1763 in Fenwick, Ayr first and then "JOHN GEMMIL married JANET PATON in 22/03/1747 in Fenwick, Ayr". Samuel and Mary had also started in Kilmarnock or Fenwick area in 1805. . JOHN GEMMIL and JANET PATON had three daughters: MARGARET GEMMEL christened 06/04/1746 in Fenwick, Ayr HELEN GEMMEL christened 25/01/1756 in Fenwick, Ayr JEAN GEMMEL christened 10/02/1754 in Fenwick, Ayr . JOHN GEMMIL and JANET (Paton?) GEMMIL had a son James christened 23/01/1763 in Fenwick, Ayr . "JAMES GEMMELL Weaver in Glasgow Married EUPHEMIA CLARKSON residenter there 17/01/1814." James would be 51yrs old could have been married before too. . Does anyone know of these Gemmels? I have not been able to track EUPHEMIA CLARKSON's family yet.

I am reposting my interests. Some of my family from Morvern ended up in Ayrshire. Does anyone have any information on siblings of McLACHLANs and FERGUSONs who may have come from Morvern after 1851. My Peggy McLACHLAN nee CAMPBELL died as a pauper in 1890 at Upper Skelmorlie and her mother had been a FERGUSON. I know there are a lot of FERGUSONs in Scotland but not many in Morvern at that time. I wonder if the move to AYR was because there were relatives of some sort there.
