Sometimes surnames from previous generations are used as middle names down the line just as first names are passed down through the generations. For example Elizabeth Blythe Loggie, a.k.a. Elizabeth Allison Blythe, where Blythe is her maiden name and father's surname and Allison if I recall correctly was her mother's maiden name. Also, Jean Goldie Loggie, a.k.a. just plain Jean Loggie, and then later Jean Stewart sometimes has her first name spelled Jane instead. I have been doing a bit more research into the Colmans, but I've got a bit of a problem at the moment. You see I am 100% sure these Colmans, Peter and Agnes and family are my ancestors, but I'm having trouble finding the parents of both Peter and Agnes. I think he may have parents from Ireland, or perhaps he was born in Kilmarnock. And Agnes, I've managed to check up a bit on the LDS web-site, but that Agnes ( Cassiday) was born in Kirkcudbrightshire, the other side of Scotland, so I'm not sure if that's her. Would any of the Scotish censuses between 1841 and 188i mention the names of the parents of Peter Colman and Agnes Colman ( nee Cassiday) ? or at the very least where they were born and the dates? I believe Peter was born about 1848 and Agnes about 1847. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. >From Ancestry When the attempt is made to initiate a direct contact with a submitter. A paid Ancestry.com membership is required in order to initiate contact with Ancestry members using this feature. "This I appreciate, as I believe that the information should be relayed through the Rootsweb sites to vaious mailing lists as this is the reason we are researchers at all, not through private converstaions between parties and we therefore chance losing the ability to learn of the individuals findings." A recent post from the Frew-L to this list is a prime example. The writer stated that she wanted direct contact regarding the findings of the other researcher regarding Lily Frew. I follow that line being a Frew descendant, and it just annoys the heck out of me when I see something like that. We all lose, so I believe that the policy taken by Ancestry and Rootsweb is the right one." 3. Hello, Ayrshire researchers: After posting my earlier message about not being able to respond to a message at Ancestry, I have made a discovery. As I said in my earlier posting, if you get an e-mail from the Message Board Administration Team and follow the link provided, if you aren't a member of Ancestry you are unable to reply to the posting. HOWEVER, once the message is gatewayed to AYRSHIRE-L by way of the gc-gateway@rootsweb.com, it appears it is then possible to follow the link in that message and post a reply. I do not understand why this should be the case, but it works! Irene in B.C.

    3. This morning, I am fuming at Ancestry, which has somehow acquired rights to postings I made to rootsweb message boards from 2001 onwards. They have 21 of my postings listed, the majority of which are AYRSHIRE postings. Today, I received a message from the MESSAGE BOARD ADMINISTRATION TEAM that a reply had been made to 'my' posting, viz: A reply has been posted to your message, "Re: Colman family from Kilmarnock" on "2/29/2004 2:16:06 PM GMT" Author: ringofab41 Date: 2/4/2010 2:48:15 PM GMT http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/5874.1.1/mb.ashx I've spent a lot of time this morning collecting information for a reply to this posting. Now I find that I am unable to respond to the Colman researcher UNLESS I agree to a Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions set out by Ancestry, which include, "Whether in the free section or in the subscription section of the Service, all Content is owned and/or copyrighted by Ancestry." How is Ancestry able to take ownership of my postings without my consent? Surely the postings are copyright to me? Anyway, if the COLMAN researcher sees this e-mail message, he or she may contact me directly by responding to this message. Irene, British Columbia

There was a LOT of cousins marrying cousins in that family and I wonder who Hugh Stewart's parents were? I don't know anything about Agnes Fulton - yet? I have Hugh Goldie marrying Elisabeth Kay 1786. Her father was James Kay but I don't know who Hugh's father was. That's interesting about them all going to USA. Are you in touch with George Gray - he is descended from the Goldie-Logie line. I don't know if he is still on the list. When I was speaking with him way back I think we decided it likely that George Goldie and Hanna Kay's daughter Jean married Wm Logie. But no proof. I have some info in regards to a Jean goldie but to which of these two I am not sure. But this info does not fit either becaue the info you have shows Jean as a daughter of a Hugh Goldie anyways this is what i have from another source.... "Jean "Goldie" Loggie and her husband Hugh Stewart from Auchinleck next to Muirkirk parish and their children first immigrated to Chicago USA in...I think early 1880's after the 1881 census. In the early 1870's coal reserves were discovered in Illinois southwest of Chicago and new mines were opened in an area near western Will and eastern Grundy counties (mine owners were keen for the influx of foreign labor to keep wages low). The man who sent me this info's Great Grandfather William "B" Stewart initially stayed behind and lived in the Loggie household in Muirkirk rather than with the Stewart's in Auchinleck. He was born out of wedlock prior to Jean's marriage to Hugh, that's not too unusual but his biological father, James Begg, signed his birth cert and gave him his name. He shows up in the 1871 British census as a 1 month old in the Loggie house and 1881 as a 10 year old with Elizabeth Blythe Loggie as the only other occupant. He came to Illinois and rejoined the Ste! warts using that name after Elizabeth's death." I am having much trouble trying to find out what Jean is mine, and have come across a lot of your replies over the years to other people. Seems its a very difficult task. So many of the same names. You could be right with the James. When you say James is that the James that married Agnes Fulton (his grandfater was a hugh and great grandfater was a called James) Or their first born James?
