    1. [AYR] Fenwick Area Colonies?
    2. Following up on my recent posting, I'm wondering what places folks on the list know of with concentrations of families from around Fenwick/Kilmarnock/Stewarton? I know there were bunches of folks at several sites in the U.S. and New Zealand, and some to Australia... but would like to know more. My list: Orleans County, VT (Towns: Craftsbury, Glover, Greensboro / Families include: Sheilds, Calderwood, Mitchell, Borland) Saratoga & Fulton Counties, NY (Towns: Saratoga Springs, West Galway, Perth / Families include: Calderwood, Wylie, Borland, etc.) Randolph County, IL (Towns: Sparta, Tilden, etc. / Families include: Cuthbertson, Anderson, Gemmell, Watt, Wylie, Andrew, Faulds, Bicket, Calderwood, Wright, Dunlop, Nairn, Fulton.) Crawford County, KS (Towns: Girard, Pittsburg, Beulah -- most, but not all, of these were second generation families from Randolph County, IL) Others around the world??? 1. [AYR] Fenwick & Kilmarnock Folks to Orleans County Vermont?
    2. Hi, I understand from a contact in Vermont that there were seven families from around Fenwick and Kilmarnock that settled in the area of Craftsbury, Glover, and Greensboro, VT in the 1820s, with more coming later. The names I know are Sheilds, Calderwood, and Mitchell. I'm curious what others may know? Ken Cuthbertson Albuquerque

    3. Jenny, I don't know if you've ever searched the online database of the National Archives of Scotland, but here's a link that will take you to their welcome page, where you can follow a link to their search page. (I don't know why, but the same url appears for both pages while using the url always takes you to the welcome page.): http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/ Once there, unfortunately, you can only search for one spelling at a time. I did a couple of quick searches and found the following number of results for various spellings of the name between the years 1650 and 1750. However, I did not read the extracts to see whether they are persons or places or what kinds of information are included in the extracts. Hilhous - 1 Hilhouse - 4 Hillhous - 1 Hillhouse - 38 There were no results searching for the name spelled with a "w" instead of "u". 1. Re: [AYR] "Buried in the Lair of"
    2. Loretta Layman
    3. Hi Chris. Here is one definition of "lair" from the online Dictionary of the Scots Language at http://www.dsl.ac.uk/dsl/index.html: 4. A burial-place or -site. a. A grave or tomb. b. Chiefly, a space or plot reserved as burial-space by a person or family in a church or graveyard. I've cited this database several times in the past and should have included the sources from which it is taken. They are: (1) The 12-volume "Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue" compiled over the period 1931-2002, which contains information about Scots words in use from the twelfth to the end of the seventeenth centuries (Older Scots). The first editor of this series was Sir William Craigie, who was also the third Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary. (2) The 10-volume "Scottish National Dictionary" compiled over the period 1931-1976, which contains information about Scots words in use from 1700 to the 1970s (modern Scots). The first editor was William Grant. The digitization of these volumes into the Dictionary of the Scots Language was done at the University of Dundee between the years 2001 and 2004. This database undoubtedly, in my view, is the most extensive and reliable source for authentic definitions from both Old Scots and the "modern" Scots language. 3. Aye - not too many monarchs around in Ayrshire at that time! Not sure when it stopped being called that (or when the old 'cure' of the scrophulous person being touched by the king stopped being regarded.. it's likely the name hung on a bit longer than the belief, and that the belief hung on among the unenlightened, even through the 'enlightenment'...) 1. [AYR] Fwd: ARNOT marriage entry
    2. Lois Copping
    3. Hello Chris, I went to FamilySearch and sought the marriage of Isobel Wallace and found this event which is an extracted event and you therefore might learn something from the parish entry. > >ISOBEL WALLACE > >Marriages: > Spouse: ARNOT > Marriage: 1777 Kirknewton And East Calder, Midlothian, Scotland > > > Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type: > > M116905 1773 - 1792 1067763 I have note of 7 children to your Thomas Arnot and Isobel Wallace from 1777 - 1797. The first two males were named Joseph and William. I would consider the possibility that Joseph was named after Isobel's father: >ISABEL WALLACE >Event(s): > >Christening: >05 JUN 1757 Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland > >Parents: > Father: JOSEPH WALLACE > Mother: MARGARET GILLONE FYI there is also a Poor Law entry dated 4 Mar 1861 for Joseph Mackie Arnot which I found somewhere at one time on the internet. Poor Law can give you a lot of information and there could be more than one application. Kilbirnie Parish Council Record of Applications, 1859-1862 CO3/41/25 Surname Forename(s) Age County of Birth Occupation Residence Year of Application Dependents: Arnot Joseph Mackie 81 Beith Farm Servant, Labourer, Vagrant Montgomerystone 1861 None There may have been more than one application as I also have this information claiming his was disabled. #429 widower/aged 81/farm servant & labr/wholly disabled b. Beith I have always been interested in this Beith family of ARNOT. My Esther Arnot b. 1761 Polmont/Stirling married Matthew MACKIE in 1782 at Dalry/Ayrshire. This Mackie family were at Dalry for generations. Esther's father Archibald was born in West Lothian and her mother was born in Mid Lothian and they married in Stirling. Esther's father worked for the Earl of Glasgow at Kelburne and latterly Blair of C. Worth considering is the fact that your Thomas Arnot was likely born 1757 or earlier and my Archibald had a younger brother named Thomas born 1749/50 Bathgate/West Lothian. I hope this data assists you in your search. If you find any connection to my Arnot I would be happy to hear, Lois

    1. Re: [AYR] BEITH death records - correction
    2. Chris I bought my copy of the SAFHS publication on-line from the SAFHS website. I suggest you try NZSG library if you are a member, or your local genealogy branch, or local LDS family history centre. You will get the same information free from Scotland's People and the National Archives of Scotland websites. But here are the available registers for Beith as listed in the SAFHS publication... and the actual records from these registers should be available on Scotland's People. But you will find the registers are far from being a complete record of BDM's for the period. Either people didn't bother registering or the records have been lost. Births 1661-1694, 1701-1854: Marriages 1659-1854, 1820-1854: Deaths 1783-1787: Re your Arnot family. Pigots directory 1825/26... A James Argot (poss Arnot) was a bookseller and stationer in Main Street. Pigots directory 1837... Agnes Arnot, Catherine Arnot were booksellers and stationers in Main Street. Catherine Arnot was a milliner and dressmaker in Main Street. Jane Arnot was a straw hat maker in Main Street. The post mistress was Catherine Arnott but in the 1825-26 Pigots the post mistress was Catherine Alexander. Perhaps the same Catherine but married to ? Arnot/t by 1837. Not sure if they will help you, but best I can think of at the moment. The Arnots do not appear on the Beith 1691 Hearth tax record so were not a long established family in Beith and the best you can hope for is they came very late to Beith from an area with far better record coverage. Nyle
