It is helping me to piece together this family. We only know what Alexander told his sons. I just found David's second wife in the 1901 census. She is still living in Kilmarnock but David has died and she is listed as Maggie. The only children living with her were her children, Maggie (Margaret), Agnes, Minnie and Jeanie. Alexander left home and joined the army in 1892. Still working on locating his brother John. Thanks for all the tips which I have found helpful since I do not live in Scotland. I was in a bit of a rush at the time of making that first posting, and apologise. To Eileen, Mary and others... I have the Hearth Tax records for Ayrshire 1691... if you know where your families might have been living at that time I can search the county/parish for you. Mary Ayrshire death records are very gappy. My CD shows only one Morrison listed for Old/New Cumnock ... John Morrison died 8 February 1789. Mortcloth and funeral expenses paid 2/6d. One Morrison listed for Muirkirk... Catherine Morrison, formerly residing in Tarworks, died 13 October 1792, buried 14 October 1792. Child. No listings for spelling... Morrisson. The Ayrshire Roots website might be worth a try. Best wishes Nyle Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hi Lorraine, Thank you so much for taking time to find this for me as well as the death at SP. I have downloaded the details and will post to the list in hopes it will help someone else. I must have been stuck in Ayrshire! This will give other Frew and Jeffrey researchers some new information. Thanks so much for your kindness and the search Lorraine, I know that George has been noted as "Dunn" so this is a new twist on the surname. 3. Hi Heather, This is a response to an old message of yours (2006). I have Anne Brown married James Morrison in March 1778 Muirkirk. Their first two children were James and Thomas so I suspect Anne's parents of being Thomas Brown and Margaret White shown below but no proof. ANNE BROWN Christening: 07 MAR 1760 New Cumnock, Ayr, Scotland Father: THOMAS BROWN Mother: MARGARET WHITE Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type: C116082 1706 - 1820 1041400 Film 6900534 Film I haven't got anywhere with these Browns but believe James Morrison's father to have also been James so unless Anne's was another James, Thomas is a likely candidate. This would have her born 1760 and married at 18 (she went on having babies for 23 years). Hope you can shed some light? To look for John you could try http://www.findmypast.co.uk which is another pay-to-view site that has passport applications up to 1903 (if he went to USA) and passenger lists beginning in 1890. As the family is not found in the 1901 census, it is possible they emigrated also. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Alexander Johnston Morrison, death, 1876. age 14 years, Kilmarnock, Ayr. The same year there is a birth for a Alexander Johnston Morrison, in Kilmarnock, Ayr. There is also a death in Kilmarnock, Ayr, 1877, for a Agnes Johnston Morrison, aged 36 years. It looks to me that the first Alexander, died 1876, and his mother was pregnant at this time and the couple named the child in honour of his sibling who died the same year. To prove this you would however have to take the chance and purchase these three documents for a modest sum from Scotlandspeople online. Regards, Jonn. James Thomas Anne Katherine Margaret Janet John Young Shaw Ronald (my gg-grandfather) DAVID, born 1801 New Cumnock. His family included a son, also David, born about 1841. 3. Dear Fellow Listers I have recently found the 1851 Census for George Dove and wife Janet Frew, they are living in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire and are noted to have living with them a stepson Joseph Howie aged 16yrs b Kilwinning. Janet Frew is the daughter of Robert Frew and Janet Jeffrey and born in Stevenston 1812 and died in 1867. Is there anyone on the Ayrshire list that may have information in regards to Joseph HOWIE that may be of help to me in this research of my family? Also is it possible for SKS with access to the 1861 and 1871 check for George Dove AKA Dunn and wife Janet as well as Joseph Howie. I would appreciate it very much. I too will do a search next time I visit the website. My CD of Ayrshire deaths is pre 1855 so not helpful, and I tried to find marriages for the children without luck. Here are the day/month of the births I posted for you... these ALL are birth records (not christening)... Jane 26 August 1864, Alexander J. 28 March 1863, Mary 30 June 1866, and Mary 3 July 1867, Ellen June 1869, Marion J. 25 May 1871 and John 8 February 1874. No... I didn't find the birth of the second Alexander Johnston Morrison but it would seem there is evidence the one above died, and his name re-used. Google for cemetery/burials USA there are plenty of free sites to search, also obituaries from newspapers in USA. I found a relative of mine that way... left Lanarkshire - died New Orleans. And google search for free census records in the States. Hope I am not telling you what others have already covered... if I can think of anything else I will post it on the list. Good luck, Eileen. I couldn't find them beyond 1881 and I never thought to check for Morrison spelled with two s'. According to family members, Alexander related that his brother John left home at an early age and may have located in the United States. They lost touch with him and never heard from him again. Looking through the 1891 census, I found a Marion(born 1871 in Kilmarnock)married to a James Adam but I am not sure if it is Alexander's older sister as no maiden name was given. I could not find them again in the 1901 census. Alexander left home early to join the army and fight in the Boer War in South Africa so we didn't hear anything about his father's second family. I am wondering if the first Alexander Johnston Morrison died young and his parents named one of their younger sons the same name? I am assuming that Agnes, his mother died sometime between 1876 and 1879 as his father remarried by the time of the 1881 census. Thanks for offering to do some further research.
