My last reference is the 1901 Census which shows only 2 Braney families in Ayr. The previously mentioned David Braney & Margaret Mc Kinlay's young family & David's mother & brother the other family. Obviously there were probably descendants from the sons of the family in Ayr. I would be interested to know where the Braney family you know are now living & if you could give me some idea of their age group. If interested I can share some of what I know about the Braneys with you. Regards Kath Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In regards to Stair, Ayrshire, I found an interesting site that mentions the church that was built in 1706. It appears to have had two 'lofts' one named Drongan and the other Barskimming. Could anyone clarify the loft designation? I think that the baptismal record for my ancestor mentions being 'baptized at Drongan' Any help appreciated Arlene Hetchler Arizona, .

This makes tracing them very difficult. Were there any male births? To start with and for a long time, I thought it was just something in the water producing lots of girl babies. But now I think there may have been a reason why the male babies went relatively unrecorded. Perhaps they were being protected. Has anyone else been feeling this? Perhaps their 1st or 2nd daughter would be named after the maternal grandmother, so I suggest you look for a Sarah McHutcheon born between 1835 and 1840. I know its just guesswork, but hey. You have been in contact with Irene Kennedy. it is from Irene that 'Joseph changed his name from Boyce to Dickson (his mother's maiden name) to avoid the Boer War" Not sure how a change in name would have avoided the Boer war. It is the only information I have re the name change. I do have a newspaper article about Joseph's youngest son William- Marshall of the RAF Sir William Dickson, b.1898 and.1987 Apparently the great-great grandson of Lord Nelson - would like to know the connection!
