    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: joblom99 Surnames: McHOUL,McHAUL, McCOOL,McCOLL,McCALL,McCAUL,McCUMHAIL,BARRISKILL,BARRISKELL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/13968.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Mary, I am picking up on your McHOUL. My GGG-GM was Helen (Ellen?) McHOUL, married to William BARRISKILL. He was from Ballyworkan, Co Armagh, N.Ireland, but I'm not 100% sure about her. I cannot find their marriage and the earliest Scottish birth I could find for Helen McHOUL was 1822 in Mauchline. In the hope that she was mine, I traced quite a large tree for her (which I'd be happy to share....she might not be mine, but she might be yours). But based on the births of my Helen's children (starting in 1829), she had to have been older. The 1851 census for Glasgow, Lanark lists her as widowed and 43 years of age, so that would put her birth more like 1808. Her death in 1867 in the District of High Church in Glasgow lists her age as 51 (making her birth to be 1816). My other dilemma is the actual spelling of her surname. I know that most often names were recorded as they sounded so this one has manifested in many different ways. On the various documents I have found where she is named the spelling has been McHOUL, McHAUL, McCOOL, McCOLL, McCALL, McCAUL. Somewhere I even read that it could be COULSON or McCUMHAIL. I have spent years looking for pre-1798 GIBSONs but with no luck. I have maternal lines though. My most fascinating family history discovery involved the illegitimate birth of Margaret GIBSON's father. His mother was a farmer's daughter. The putative father vigourously denied paternity and I have eight pages of witness statements from Kirkoswald Kirksessions. They are delightful glimpses into the minutiae of Kirkoswald life 200 yrs ago. I live in Lincolnshire, England, but lived near Glasgow as a child. I visited Ayrshire a year ago and sought out villages and dwellings of these forebears, including the St Quivox of Margaret and Robert McKELVIE. I have a photo or two which I will also send you. 3. Hi Natalie have you looked in the census 1841 - 1901 for the family ? they are available on Scotlands People andsome on the Free census website, just put free census in Google and that should take you there. Scotlands People is a pay site but its quite reasonable, 6pd for 30 credits, it takes 6 credits for 1 image. 3. Hi J H McDonnell I know I am not descended from John Brown of Priesthill but we may share an ancestor prior to 1570. My Brown ancestors lived for over 400 years in the parishes of Galston and Sorn (then known as Dalgain) in east Ayrshire. My ancestor James Brown married a Janet Waussoun in Dalgain in 1570. These areas were close to Priesthill. I would like to see if my 36 point Y-DNA result matches any Brown surnamed descendent who can prove their descent from John Brown of Priesthill. Do you know of anyone that matches that description. Still surnamed Brown and have a Y-DNA result? Regards Ken Brown Gold Coast Australia.
