Hello listers; I have NIMMO in my tree as well - mostly from Maybole but my earliest (marrying in) NIMMO is Robert born c 1791 Dailly AYR,. In my EDGAR branch, Annaple EDGAR marries Matthew CARNOCHAN. Their daughter, Janet, b. 14 Oct 1794, m. Robert NIMMO, c. 1791, on 14 Apr 1822 in Maybole. Robert and Janet continue living in Maybole and I've found seven children born to them: Annaple 1823, Thomas 1825, Mathew 1826, Mathew 1828, Robert 1830, Janet 1832 and Annaple Edgar 1835. I assume that Annaple 1823 and Mathew 1826 died. It looks like Robert and Janet followed the Scots naming pattern leading me to think that Robert Nimmo's father is probably named Thomas Nimmo. Thomas NIMMO 1825 m. Annie MCCLYMONT; sons Robert 1858 and James 1855. Mathew NIMMO 1828 m. Sarah MAXWELL; dtr Sarah 1858 and son Mathew Carnochan 1862. Robert NIMMO 1830 m. Jane MCCLYMONT; dtr Janet Carnochan 1861. Nimmo is found in "Black's Surnames of Scotland" on page 629: "NIMMO. This surname is sometimes spelled Nemmock (Nisbet, I, p. 244). The attempt (Narrative of Mr. James Nimmo, 1654-1709, p. xxix) to provide a French origin, from Ne Mot is too fanciful. The Nimmos are also traditionally said to be descended from French Protestants who fled from the massacre of St. Bartholomew in 1572, but the name is found in Scotland much earlier. An early form of the name is found in that of Johannes Newmoch, juror on assize at Liston, 1459 (Edmonstone,80). Agnes Newmoch was married in 1490 (Sc. Ant., III, p. 108), and Alexander Nemok was witness in Glasgow, 1587 (Protocols, x). Alexander Nemo was retoured heir of John Nemo de Mydilmount in the bailiary of Kylestewart,1616 (Retours, Ayr, 136,139). Marion Nimoke was married in Edinburgh, 1618 (Edinb.Marr.). James Nimmo, the Covenanter, fought at Bothwell Bridge, 1679, and Rev. William Nimmo was historian of Stirlingshire. Nemoche 1598. Nimo 1623." regards, Judy in BC Can -----Original Message----- From: ayrshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ayrshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: April-22-10 5:27 AM To: AYRSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AYR] nimmo This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. When you log on to the site, there is you will see a mention at the bottom of the page Contact Us, press that it then takes you to another page, which says Continue here to fill out the contact us form, that in turn takes you to another page where a email box appears for you to fill in what you put in the email is Illegible Image, also the Gross Data, from Roberts, death certificate, you get that from the index of his death. Also tell them in a nice tone that you cannot read the Certificate. Then press button to send to them. They will send you a notification that they received your email, and if they are not to busy you should receive a email within two days containing a attachment of a improved image. I have always found Scotlandspeople very helpful in this way. Let me know how you get on. Regards, Jonn. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. For this Helen(Ellen) McHOUL I have siblings Jean, William, Janet, John, Mary, Hugh, Marion, Margaret and David with births starting in 1801. I have marriages and descendants for some of them. I have their parents as John McHOUL (1783-1845) and Jean WEIR (1783-?) married in 1801 in Mauchline. There are so many Johns that to keep them straight I had to number them. So, the John married to Jean WEIR is number 3. I have 2 siblings for him and his parents as John (#2) McHOUL and Jean REID married in 1781. Jean must have died as John #2 was married in 1783 to Ann MUIR and they had 6 children (one being named John). John #2 had 10 siblings and his father was named John (#1), born sometime before 1730. I don't have a name for his mother but his parents were married in 1758. This is just the tip of the iceberg on what I found for this line. When I first started my research someone told me that this was our family, but the age of "my" Helen just didn't seem right. Then I found her death record and her father was named as Paul McHOUL, not John. Then I found census records for a Helen living past the date of death that I had. This other Helen seemed to remain unmarried and her age on the censuses matched with the Helen born in 1822. So, then I was convinced that I was tracing the wrong woman. If you'd like to see all that I have on this I can give you a link to my online tree. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are five births on Family Search, for Robert Nimmo, and Elizabeth Gordon. Mary Nimmo, born 10/Aug/1845. Girvan, Ayr, Mary Nimmo, born 02/April/1855. Girvan, Ayr, Robert Nimmo, born 11/April/1857. Girvan,Ayr, David Nimmo, born 2/March/1860. Girvan, Ayr, Elizabeth Nimmo, born 31/July/1863. Calton/Glasgow. There is also a facility on Scotlandspeople, where you can ask them to supply you with a improved scan of the image of Robert Nimmo's, death certificate which should enable you to hopefully read that certificate.
