I've got a pdf file with all the Conkie details in it but I can't send it through the ancestry site as it only takes GEDCOM files. If you send me your direct email address I'll send it there and that should work OK. Isobel Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. While on the subject of McLELLANs, I have some who are 'missing'. Robert McLELLAN m Janet McLACHLAN (McGlaughan & var) in 1853 in Kilbirnie. Robert died in 1863. Janet died 1886. Issue: John 1854, James abt 1856, Isabella 1857-1885, Dugald Robert (Robert) 1860-1887, Margaret 1861, Jean 1863. John was a woollen mill worker at Beith in 1871. Was he a ships steward living at Hope Terrace, West Ham in 1881?James was at Calder St, Lochwinnoch with his mother in 1871. Where after that? Possibly a traveller draper at Wigan in Lancashire.Margaret after 1871?Jean is probably the Janet McLELLAN with the family of Alex REID & family in Devon in 1881. I cannot find her after that. I would be grateful for any information re links to these family members. Anne Maye

    3. I have McLELLANs in Ayrshire. They do not seem to be related in any way and were from around Lochwinnoch (RFW)  & Kilbirnie (AYR). In searching the spelling can be the bugbear. Try McLELLAND, McCLELLAND, McHELLON, McLELLON, and even one with a McCLLELAND, and I would suggest any possible variation of these. Anne Maye

    3. I am seeking assistance with tracing my 3xgreat grandfather William MCLELLAN. I believe him to be the William McLELLAN born 21 Jul 1796 Beith, Ayrshire and baptised 24 Jul 1796 Beith, Ayrshire; a son of John MCLELLAN and Margaret CRAIG. William died on 12 May 1883 at Geilston, Cardross, Dunbarton; his death certificate recording that he was formerly a gamekeeper, married first to Margaret COCHRAN, second to Margaret PAUL, and third to Ann ALLAN; and that his father was John McLELLAN, horse dealer, deceased, and mother Elizabeth (sic - not Margaret) McLELLAN maiden surname CRAIG, deceased. The informant was Martha, one of his daughters. I believe that he married Margaret COCHRANE 4 Jul 1823 Dunlop, Ayrshire; and that they had Agnes MCLELLAN (17 Jul 1824 Dunlop), John MCLELLAN (6 Apr 1826 Dunlop), Elisabeth MCLELLAN (13 Mar 1828 Dunlop), and John MCLELLAN (19 Jul 1830 Dunlop). He married Margaret PAUL 13 Sep 1833 Fintry, Stirling. My 2xgreat grandfather - also William McLELLAN, was born about 1832 in Fenwick Ayrshire (according to the 1881 census which is the only one that I have found him listed in where there is a parish of birth shown). I don't know whether his mother was Margaret COCHRAN or Margaret PAUL, as I have not yet found a baptism entry around 1832/1833; but on both his marriage (1857) and on his death (1888) his mother is shown as Margaret McLELLAN maiden surname COCHRAN. However, there is a baptism recorded in the parish register of Cardross Dumbartonshire which records "William the lawful son of William McLELLAN and Margaret PAULl was born at Drumfork 12 Jan and baptised 13 Feb 1837". William McLELLAN and Margaret PAUL also had Helen MCLELLAN (1835), Martha MCLELLAN (1836 Fintry), Marion Campbell MCLELLAN (23 Nov 1838 Cardross), Mary Campbell MCLELLAN (24 Jan 1841 Cardross). I have located William in the 1841 census at Camis Eskan High, Cardross; and in 1881 at Main Road, Cardoss. I have been unable to trace him in 1851, 1861, or 1871 census records, and have been unable to find the deaths of Margaret COCHRAN or Margaret PAUL, or his marriage to Ann ALLAN. Any assistance and/or ideas for further research will be most welcome. Kind regards, Ed

She was probably born about 1765 and I have no idea how to discover more about her. Alexander was already 63 and I believe, a widower so she may well have been married before too. They had two children - John Dunbar born 1804 aand Margaret in 1809. I don't suppose this is any help unless we manage to draw more Grays in. Was Gray one of the names that had been taken on when highland names were dangersous after the '45 - and if so - what was the precursor of Gray? Does anyone know? She had written to the local paper here trying to connect with some school friends and mentioned the Conkies so I got in touch with her then. I've had a look at your tree and ther's been additions to it since she sent it to me. I remember she had a terrible time trying to copy it as it was on paper (computers make it much easier). I've got a lot more going backwards and out the way. I got back to a Robert Conkie whose son John was born about 1813 so ther is quite a lot. I've got it all on computer so I just have to sort it out and work out how to send it and I'll send it on to you. My great grandparents were Robert Conkie and Agnes Jardine and I've got quite a lot of information about the Conkie family. Are you by any chance in Australia? A few years ago I got in contact with a distant cousin in Australia and she gave me details of the Conkies who had emigrated to Australia and their families and I wondered if you were connected to them. I'm based in Dumbarton Scotland all of my Conkie family are either from the Dumbarton area or Rutherglen Lanarkshire.
