    1. [AYR] Nanaimo mine disaster 1887 May 3rd

    3. The 1887 Nanaimo Mine Disaster Mining Victims from Many Nations _____ This article is reproduced in it's entirety from Volume 13, Issue 4, Winter 1996 of AncesTree, and cross indexed over to Volume 11, Issue 3, Fall 1994 for the level numbers, published by the Nanaimo Family Historical Society. Another excellent reference resource about the lives of miners on Vancouver Island is the soft cover book "Three Dollar Dream" by Lynne Bowen, (ISBN0889820651, Published in 1987 by Ooolichan Books, Lantzville, British Columbia, $19.95). Using photos, maps, testimony from the inquest, and vivid descriptions from the families of lost miners, Bowen paints a clear picture of the 1887 tragedy and documents the underground working conditions at that time. This well-researched book also chronicles the tales of immigrants from many nations who came to dig the coal, and the tragic accidents that befell them. _____ On May 3, 1887, a massive explosion erupted deep underground in the Number One Coal Mine in Nanaimo, British Columbia, taking the lives of 148 souls, many of whom had immigrated to Vancouver Island from countries all over the world. By the end of that week, the Nanaimo Free Press had published the names of most of those confirmed dead in the disaster. Because newspaper accounts on the tragic accident were incomplete (and the surviving clippings have deteriorated to the point where some names are almost illegible), the following transcription may contain errors and omissions. The upper floor archival holdings include mining company payroll books, accidents reports, maps and photos of coal mines and mining towns in the region. <http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Ebcvancou> back to the Vancouver Island GenWeb Project

    2. Linda Nordby
    3. Hi John, Thanks so much for this post. Lynn Bowen in her books regarding the earlier miners has made mention of this mutiny by the miners on board. I will find the book and send further info. Also I have this article from an earlier research: http://bcgenesis.uvic.ca/getDoc.htm?id=V55104.scx The images are clear and easily read penmanship. According to this dispatch,( Despatch to London Douglas to Grey, Sir George 6876, CO 305/6, p. 47; received 23 July) the barque Colinda, owned by Mr. Tomlin of London, was chartered by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1853 to carry supplies and new emigrants to Victoria from London. Off the coast of Chile, the passengers of Colinda incited a mutiny and forced Captain John Powell Mills to anchor at the Port of Valdivia. The passengers were tried at Valparaiso and acquitted based on lack of evidence. They remained in Chile and refused to continue on under the command of Mills. Mills, who was also part owner of Colinda, sold much of the cargo owned by the Hudson’s Bay Company. He refused to pay the HBC in full for the undelivered goods and was arrested upon landing at Victoria. Colinda eventually returned to London under the command of James M Reid. Mills’ account of the incident can be found in this dispatch. He claims that Governor Douglas “seized the ‘Colinda’ in the Queens Name” and “converted [the ship] into a brothel for prostitutes and drunkards.” Douglas’ response to Mills’ complaints can be found in this dispatch. The Hudson's Bay Company sought to develop coal deposits on the island. Native people seemed lacking in the skills and attitudes required to mine coal so experienced miners from Ayrshire became the solution. The 43 miners, contracted in Kilmarnock, never arrived to Fort Victoria, as they abandoned ship in Valparaiso, Chile. Following four months at sea, a hard passage through the Straits of Magellan, deaths of children, and hunger, the passengers mutinied. The miners disembarked after their wives refused to sail any further, and promised to stay in Chile, with or without their husbands. These miners went on to contribute to the local Chilean coal industry. I am interested in finding out if any list member had heard of this voyage, and perhaps can add some more family detail to this unfortunate journey during which ten babies died. I do not have any more details other than what is listed here. An article at Wikipedia cites this book for a statement, which I would like to confirm, to the effect that "the lairds of Lyne had a townhouse in Irvine as did many of the other lairds in Cunninghame". 3. Elaine Dunlop is about 3 or 4 kms from Stewarton. Do you know which Church they were married in Dunlop in 1824? I am THINKING that they may have been part/Sect of the Presbyterian Church which did not have a Church in Stewarton. Or lived between the two towns and for some reason - like liking the Minister at Dunlop compared to Stewarton - got married in Dunlop instead of their home town. Have you looked at those aspect? I have a copy of the "The Graves in Fenwich Church" but there are no Shields listed in the Index. So it would appear that these are unmarked graves of which there are plenty in this Churchyard. There are Wyllie's in the list but the Index only goes to the T's. Although there is an farm called Wyllieland which seems to have ahd a Gemmell family living there form the 1800's. Does anyone know if the Church has a list of "who owns what plot"?. 3. Elaine Funny thing is that FamilySearch.org also has an Agnes Wylie (one L) born either 10/7/1766 at Riccarton OR 10/7/1776 at Riccarton with the parents listed as William Wylie and Elizabeth Raeburn. Entry was submitted by a member of the LDS Church and sometimes these entries are not very accurate - but many times they are. The problem with Scotland's people as I have found through my own research is that if you don't put in the exact spelling for the record you don't get a return. For example when I was researching my BROWN ancestors in the parish of Sorn - yeah I did find some of them with the spelling BROWN must missed out on the earlier ones that were spelled BROUN, BROWNE, BROUNE!! Until that is somebody told me about using wildcards. For example if you were to input WYL* (don't forget the asterisk) Then again your Elizabeth Ryburn may have been spelled Raeburn. One of my ancestors had a few kids in the parish of Galston and then they went to Kilmarnock and I expect a similar thing happened to your Wyllies/Wylies. Often back then people couldn't read or write and so the spelling of the name was left up to how the Church Officer of the Kirk spelled it. In two different parishes the name could be spelled differently. In fact in the SAME recording of one of my Brown ancestors the name was spelled BROUN and then BROUNE! Here's a trick for young players on Scotland's People. Try this: In surname put WYL* First name Leave blank Parent: William Wyl* Parent: Elizabeth R If that doesn't work then do the same but substitute Elizabeth R for Elisabeth R Don't choose a parish On the occasions I've got right it then brings up ALL the children of the parents that fit the input. Good Luck! Ken Brown

    2. Mary Paton
    3. Yes, Jean - a good idea as Kay suggests to do the IGI before scotlandspeople. IGI takes and offers several spellings whereas with scotlandspeople you need to use * for alternatives or you only get exactly what you ask for. But once you find what you want on the IGI you can check scotlandspeople and also see the original documents if you want to - which can tell you things not shown on IGI. eg. on scotlandspeople for MacDonald use M*cDonald or even M*cDon* which would pick up MacDonald, McDonald and McDonnell. Good luck - 1706 is a long time ago! Mary

    2. Elaine Sharp
    3. Thank you, Ken. I did find that the Ryburn surname was spelled a few different ways including Raeburn. I also have sometimes seen the Shields surnames spelled Sheilds and a few other odd ones. All I know about our William Shields is that he is listed as a orphaned nephew in family letters to the children of John Wyllie/Janet Raeburn (1) John Wyllie/Marion Barclay (2) (I am not sure from which grandmother he was descended). Unfortunately, these letters do not give the names of William Shields parents and his US death, obit, marriage record do not give this info. In fact, it did not give where he was born in Scotland and thanks to a Wyllie family member I was given this information. So far, I have not found a daughter Elisabeth for this John Wyllie with either of his wives. The parents of John Wyllie are Matthew Wyllie and Janet Wyllie (same last name). Our William Shields came to the US ca 1849 following 2 of his Wyllie cousins here. Later the rest of this Wyllie family came to the US and lived in the same area as our William Shields. Using Scotlandspeople, the closest William Shields I can find to ours , and I believe it is him, was William Shields born Feb. 27, 1826, Stewarton, the son of William Shields and Elisabeth Wyllie. I have found a marriage record, 1824, for a William Shields, teacher, and Elisabeth Wyllie, who were living in Stewarton but looks like married in Dunlop (there is "Do" so I assume the same place couple above were married). I have spent the 10 pounds and ordered this record hoping it might show who Elisabeth's parents are as well as Williams parents and am awaiting this record. I have also spent the rest of my monthly genealogy budget obtaining other records from Scotlandspeople. Another interesting fact I found is a Margaret Shields dau. of Wm Shields was buried in Fenwick 12/28/1826, at age 15 months-- could she have been a sister of our William? Also found a Wm. Shields death in Upper Fenwick in 1835. Could this have been the father of our William. In the 1825-26 Pigot & Co's Directory? of Stewarton, there is listed under Schools - William Shields. I have checked the 1841 census, but I believe his both his parents were deceased at this time. I found a couple William Shields living with different families but I have no way of knowing which one is him. I have also checked FHC records. Elaine

    3. Hi Loretta, The short answer is The National Library of Scotland now houses that collection. See the details below... I suggest you contact them. If you google National Library of Scotland then click on Contact them link and enter your query. Just a point you may want to consider. There was no right way or wrong way of spelling names back then. It really depended on the writer so you may not achieve much even if you access the information you want Regards Judith ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The National Library of Scotland is a relatively recent body, only formally established by Act of Parliament in 1925. Previously, Scotland's national deposit library was the Advocates Library belonging to the Faculty of Advocates. This was opened in 1689 and gained national library status in the 1710 Copyright Act, giving it the legal right to claim a copy of every book published in Great Britain. In the following centuries, the library added books and manuscripts to the collections by purchase as well as legal deposit, creating a national library in all but name. By the 1920s, the upkeep of such a major collection was too much for a private body, and, with an endowment of £100,000 provided by Sir Alexander Grant of Forres, the library's contents were presented to the nation. The National Library of Scotland was formally constituted by an Act of Parliament in 1925. Sir Alexander Grant gave a further £100,000 - making his combined donations the equivalent of around £6 million today - for a new library building to be constructed on George IV Bridge. Government funding was secured which matched Sir Alexander's donation." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Date: Tue, 18 May 2010 10:11:10 -0400 > From: "Loretta Layman" <lynneage@h-o-l.com> > Subject: [AYR] Advocates' Library > To: <AYRSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> > Message-ID: <004501caf693$f8363d10$e8a2b730$@com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" > > Does anyone know anything about the Advocates' Library in Edinburgh and > how > one can obtain either copies or transcripts of 13th century documents > supposedly on reposit there? In 1851, Agnes was a widow, and living in Monkton. She rode the post between Monkton and Troon. I think David was a grocer, but that is not totally confirmed. Their son John was first a banker for the coal mine, and then a railroad engineer. I can't find death records for either one, or a marriage record. Their children were: William, John, Elizabeth and Jane. Anything sound familiar? Thanks for writing! Suzie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
