Another melancholy suicide occurred Oct 30, 1867 at Victoria, Vancouver Island. Charles Young, native of Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland, lately from Australia, strangled himself at a house on Government St. by buckling one end of a leathern strap about his neck, tying the other end to his bedstead post. The deed was deliberate, from the fact that the strap proved too short to effect the purpose and deceased tore a piece from his Baltic shirt and tying it to one end of the strap gave it the required length....Deceased once occupied a prominent position in Australia, where he married; but after a few years his wife left him and came to California, whither he followed, and after a long search discovered her one evening singing upon the stage in a Melodeon. The discovery so exasperated Young that he sprang upon the stage and attempted to kill her. The woman escaped badly injured, and Young subsequently came to Victoria, and remained for some time in employ of Wilson & Murray. Latterly he drank very freely, and only 3 days ago appeared in Court to prosecute a man who he charged with having stolen a case of brandy and a sack of flour from his cabin. [Colonist, 1867-10-30*]

Yes indeed! Thank you for all of this Linda! I have been reading all of these recent postings with great interest. In May, 1851, he took up land in Sooke, where he resided up to the time of his death, being engaged in farming and in the manufacture of lumber in connection with his elder brothers. Hi Ken I had reason to contact the East Ayrshire Council a few weeks ago regarding a grave of my gg grandparents Robert Mackie and Agnes Dickie in the St Andrews churchyard Kilmarnock, which now has flats that were developed in the old church buildings, not sure I would want to live there. Mar 30 - letter to editor by E G Prior - May I, as one who has known late John Bryden intimately for very many years, be allowed space to say a few words in regard to him. It is now a little over 41 years since I 1st saw John Bryden, when he met me early one winter morning as I landed in Nanaimo, a young man straight out from England, to take up my position of mining engineer and surveyor under him, he then being joint manager of Nanaimo Collieries with Mark Bate. Well do I remember my 1st impressions of him as he cordially welcomed me. Standing well over 6', straight as an arrow, with magnificent chest and shoulders, hair and closely cropped beard as black as a raven, and with eyes of piercing brightness but kindly withal, I thought here indeed is, and he was, a born leader of strong men. For 5 years and more I was with him every day underground in the mines and around the works, and the longer I knew him the more I came to see what a splendid character he was. Utterly fearless where duty called, he never asked a man to go where he would not himself lead, and no one who has not lived underground in a colliery can have an conception of the daily risks to life and limb that such a life entails. He was an efficient, just and kind manager and held the respect and esteem of every man working under him... From the day I left Nanaimo, and he went to manage the Wellington Collieries for his f-i-l, Hon Robert Dunsmuir, to the day of his death it was my privilege to be counted as one of his friends, and I always found that advancing years only mellowed his good qualitites... Hello again John, I am able to confirm with you in regard to David Shaw of Muirkirk, Ayrshire and wife Janet McIntosh of Irvine, yes, they did indeed sail to Valparaiso, Chile. The information that I have from my data base is as follows: David Shaw was born Jan 11 1820 at Muirkirk and the son of John Shaw and Janet Thomson. No further information of David's father John Shaw, but his mother was the daughter of John Thomas Thomson and Jane Frew of Stevenston. I am unsure of the time frame, but they did return to Ayrshire before 1858 as son Charles was born 1858, and Thomas 1860 in Stevenston. It was in 1864 that the decision to immigrate to New Zealand was made. DAVID SHAW: Baptism: January 16, 1820, Parish of Muirkirk, Ayshire, Scotland. Burial: June 06, 1887, Hautapu Cemetery, Cambridge, New Zealand. Immigration: December 04, 1864, From Glasgow, Scotland, aboard the ship VIOLA. Occupation: Miner in Scotland. Farmer, New Zealand. JANET MACINTOSH: Burial: March 08, 1916, Hautapu Cemetery, Cambridge, New Zealand. Immigration: December 04, 1864, From Glasgow, Scotland, aboard the ship VIOLA. Occupation: Muslin Sewer in Scotland. Manufacturer of cheese and butter in New Zealand. The Hudson's Bay Company sought to develop coal deposits on the island. Native people seemed lacking in the skills and attitudes required to mine coal so experienced miners from Ayrshire became the solution. The 43 miners, contracted in Kilmarnock, never arrived to Fort Victoria, as they abandoned ship in Valparaiso, Chile. Following four months at sea, a hard passage through the Straits of Magellan, deaths of children, and hunger, the passengers mutinied. The miners disembarked after their wives refused to sail any further, and promised to stay in Chile, with or without their husbands. These miners went on to contribute to the local Chilean coal industry. I am interested in finding out if any list member had heard of this voyage, and perhaps can add some more family detail to this unfortunate journey during which ten babies died. Hi all, I am trying to find a chap with surname IMRIE who went to Chile. I guess during the Coal Mining era. The family came from Failford, Ayrshire. I have very little information but wondered if anyone researching this family might have known who he was. Many thanks Cheers Chris
