If Robert was in his early-to-mid 20s in 1910, then in 1901 (the latest available census) he would still have been a minor and possibly living somewhere else. There are just too many Robert McIlwraith of an appropriate age. Due to their strict adherence to the 100-year rule, Scotland will be releasing the 1911 census data after 27 March 2011. ---- Jo-Ann Croft Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi all, Is the 1861, 1871 census online? I am still trying to find my George Campbell born 1838 in Mauchline to George and Marion (nee Murray) CAMPBELL. Many thanks Chris
Hi Chris, All the census 1841-1901 are available online at scotlandspeople or transcriptions at ancestry. Unlike England & Wales we need to wait another year for the 1911 in Scotland. Could the death in 1732 be of his father? Entirely possible his wife had a similar name to his son's wife. Sometimes need to think outside the box especially with the older information. Good advice Louise. I have a family in which three different generations all married women by the same first name and two other generations married women by the same last name. -----Original Message----- From: ayrshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ayrshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of park louise Sent: Thursday, July 08, 2010 11:11 AM To: AYRSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AYR] Howie of Lochgoin Question Could the death in 1732 be of his father? Hello listers, I've come up with a REAL Howie wrinkle. The understanding I have had is that John Howie who wrote THE SCOTS WORTHIES was the only son of the first marriage of John Howie of Lochgoin to Martha Thomson, and that after her death his father married Janet Meikle, and then Mary Borland. BUT, I noticed in the Fenwick burial list that "Jannet Muckle" wife of John Howie of Lochgoin died in 1732, and Martha Thomson died in 1742! So there's something not right it seems. I'm wondering if John Howie was born in 1732 instead of 1735? And then the names of the 2 wives got muddled? Has anybody else noted this and sorted it out? Ken Cuthbertson Albuquerque, NM

No Minnigaff remains in Kirkcudbrightshire. It has Ayrshire's Straiton, Barr and Colmonell on its northern border and Wigtownshire's Penninghame on the western border. Cecilia asked about a Thomas McCANDLISH who emigrated to USA.I have a Thomas McCANDLISH who married Peggy McLACHLAN in 1882 at Lochwinnoch in RFW. His parents were William McCANDLISH & Jane HAMILTON who were both deceased by 1882.In 1881 census he was stated to have been born Minagaff (sic) KKD.In 1901 Census Thomas' place of birth was stated to be Newton Stewart KKD (Kirkcudbright). At that time the County was KKD but I think it then became part of South Ayrshire.I know very little about this Thomas but thought his place of birth may be of interest to you if you are looking for earlier information. He lived and worked around Skelmorlie & Largs in AYR where he died in 1919. Anne Maye
