He suffered from brain disease which today we call Dementia. scary place when I went to see where it was. Now building a new estate on the site. Dont fancy living there. His wife Ann died in a house fire the same year. His Mother Rose is as far back as I can get and have her on the 1861 census age 71 working on a farm in west Kilbride. My mothers grandmother Susan McGreish was the daughter of Patrick and Mary McLiesh.Susan McGreish(daughter of Mary and My Great Grandmother) Married John Wilson who had My Grandmother Catherine Wilson Who Married Edward O'Rourke who had my Mother Susan McGreish O'Rourke. My mother also put McGreish in my name and know within my very extended family! 1. Re: [AYR] Fwd: Barns of Ayr
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. Bob I will copy this to the Ayrshire List. I can’t recall getting any replies to this question. However, I understand that Ayr was a main garrison town during this period, so MY GUESS is that there would most likely be all the Heads of the various Lands in Ayrshire and you may even have had Heads of Families from Renfrewshire, Lanarkshire and Wigtonshire at this gathering. I am sure that I have not found that information while I have been going through the Libraries in Ayrshire. Nor does it seem to be written in any of the Ayrshire Histories that I have seen. It may be a question that WOULD HAVE TO BE ASKED of Medivial History Department of one of the Universities. (I am not sure if anyone on the Ayrshire List might have such a contact whom they could ask?) The date of death for the 3rd Sir Robert Boyd is not certain, as “one Sir Robert Boyd” was Wallace’s said to be second in command at a Battle in the High Street to take – I think the Bishops castle. Hope that this answers theirs and your question Mike Boyd PS I am in the middle of a project at present, so I hope early next week I can write to about Boyd and Wallace family of Craigie Mike From: Bob Wallace , I I Sent: Friday, March 01, 2013 4:27 AM To: Mike Boyd Subject: Fwd: Barns of Ayr Mike, this message was sent on Tuesday to an email address that may no longer be viable? I've had several messages indicating the attempt is going forward to get that earlier message to you, but just checked the Clan Boyd web site to get this address for you. Best regards, Bob Wallace Dayton, Nevada, wintering in Phoenix, AZ ------ -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Barns of Ayr Date: Tue, 26 Feb 2013 10:47:59 -0700 From: Bob Wallace mailto:[email protected] To: Mike Boyd mailto:[email protected] Good Tuesday to you, Mike. Going through some Internet searching for Barns of Ayr, an event that appears to have taken place about 1296 in or near the town of Ayr. One of the results of that search includes an email message from you dating to 10 December 2010, the text copied in here to serve as a reminder for you. ------ "Robert Boyd occurs in the Ragman Roll as taking the oath of the allegiance to Edward I. at Berwick-on-Tweed 28 August 1296. (Cal. Doc. Scot, ii. 202.) He is said to have afterwards joined Sir William Wallace in his gallant attempt to assert the independence of his country. *3(Douglas.)" D1 Sir Robert Boyd, first Feudal Baron of Kilmarnock, bc / /1270 ( ), d not long after July 1333 ( ), bu , m / /129x (church, town, county, etc), wife unknown, dau of and (nee ) ????, b / /127x ( ), d / /13xx ( ), bu , and had issue:- However, the chart The Boyd Family 1205-1748 by Dick Institute, Kilmarnock, said the first of these tow Sir Robert Boyd was hanged at Ayr in 1296. While the History of the Boyd from East Ayrshire Council says:- - "The Boyds first came to importance during the Wars of independence against Edward I and Edward II, forming part of the hard core of resistance to the occupation by the English King. Sir Robert's father was hanged at Ayr in 1296 along with many lords from the West of Scotland. Sir Robert himself is said to have taken a leading part in the Burning of the Barns of Ayr when the English force in Ayr was destroyed in revenge by Wallace. In fact Boyd generally acted as Wallace's second in command." This above information may explain by the younger Sir Robert Boyd took such an active part with Wallace and Bruce. However, the question to both lists is "What other Chiefs of Families where hung at 'Ayr' "? And where might his hanging have taken place. Might this have been at Ayr Castle or the Citadel on the south side of the River Ayr? ------ Might you have received any response to the question you posed about other Chiefs being hung in the Barns, or where exactly those Barns may have been located at that time? An Ayrshire sign near the Wallace Tower on High Street at Mill Vennel suggests that that location is, according to tradition, where Wallace made his escape from town as the Barns were burning. My wife, Lois, and I were there in August of 2011 as part of our Ayrshire visit of that year. Best regards, Bob Wallace Clan Wallace Society - Worldwide Dayton, Nevada

Yes I'm still using the same email address [email protected] I haven't done much on the Thom side recently mainly because I still can't get back with definitive evidence before 1762 and the identification of Archibald's father is debatable. There is some accepted data which goes back earlier via John Thom and Mary Reid and even earlier James Thom and Jean (or even an Agnes) Fergusson but I had may contacts in the 1990's ref Candlish and Thom. Most of my info is on Excel (97 version) or Word (97)but I have downloaded a few other individual's Candlish and also a Sue(?) in Queensland. I have three cousins now in Canada and until I did the research they had no idea Archibald and Margaret came over. My late father's brother Bob's two children - Mike Thom (lives in Calgary)and Vicky(Ash) his sister (Surrey,Vancouver) and my father's youngest brother Douglas has a son Douglas Thom living in Prince Rupert. All like me are either close to or already pensioners!!!! I could send you some of what I have or are there any specific questions to start with perhaps? Cheers for now, Derek Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. As was Robert who was killed in WW1. I found his information on the Commonwealth Graves Commission site a few years ago. Tried to find someone to take a photo of his grave, as people do htat, but there was nobody in that particular area who did that. We also had a photo of Robert on the living room wall in Allans Hill, wearing his uniform. My Grampa died in 1959 and my Granny (Jessie Anderson) died in 1961. The picture was removed by someone and I have tried to find it since but nobody will own up to owning it.
