Mary died 5 days after childbirth 1891 aged 28. her fathers name Francis Tagerty was born in Ireland. The year you are looking for is different so I don't think there is a connection but you should be able to view my tree and check all of the records that I have on Tagerty. I might add that there is several different spellings of the name in a lot of the records I am putting this down to the heavy Irish accent that Francis would have had arriving from Ireland to Scotland, and the register recieving the information at the time events were recorded. I hope that this helps Cheers Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Perhaps one lead to follow is through the maternal grandparents of Lizzie Dorans in the 1911 Census. What are their names and ages at that date? I have discovered that the children of David Dorans in the Kilmarnock Census of 1881 apparently emigrated to America, and he may have gone with them, as I have found no death record for him. Their names were Agnes b 1852, Patrick b 1856, and twin brothers John and Thomas b 1863 and at least 3 of them can be found on the FamilySearch.org website to be in the USA (I am not sure about Thomas who may have remained in Scotland). 3. Those members of this list that saw the film Braveheart will remember at the start about this incident. So do any members of the “old” families of Ayrshire and “western” Scotland know if their “Head of clan” changed in this year or not? With the Boyd family, there is some dispute on the date when third Sir Robert Boyd died. So if your family tree had a member died in this year, it may mean that they were killed in this incident by Edward I of England. Thank you Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust

If the date on the sign beside Mill Vennel, just off the High Street in Ayr, is accurate, this treachery happened on 18 June 1297. The event itself is described as the English killing somewhere between a dozen and 360 Scots. The larger the number here, the more likely it is that Scots going to the meeting called by the English came from well beyond Ayrshire. If it was the intent of the English to catch William Wallace, they failed miserably. He was late to their party! Given the number of clans connected with Ayrshire, there may well have been a number of Scots removed by the English on that fateful day. 1. [AYR] Capt Robert Boyd of Irvine, cargo to Charleston in 1733
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. >From the book Scottish Trade with Colonial Charleston, 1683 to 1783, David Dobson, 2009, page 179-180 there is this information:- “Marketing in South Carolina The South Carolina Gazette, started in 1732, was the only newspaper published in Charleston, and its columns provide an insight into how the Scottish merchants there promoted and distributed their imported wares and also give an indication how they obtained the raw materials they exported to Europe. Established shopkeepers would advertise a wide range of commodities imported from the British Isles and ports visited by vessels en route, such as Madeira. Issue Number Seventy-nine of this newspaper announced that the brigantine Betty, master Robert Boyd had arrived from Glasgow on 14 July 1733: ‘To be sold at Captain R Austin’s on the Bay, choice claret imported on the Betty from Glasgow, Scotch coal at 4 pound per chaldron on board the said brigantine lying at the wharf, and good Madeira wine, by Alexander Nisbet.’ “ This “master Robert Boyd”, I believe is the same person as Captain Robert Boyd of Irvine, Ayrshire whose son Alexander came to Boydton, Mecklenburg County, Virginia, USA in the early 1760’s and married in May 1766 Ann Dandridge Swepson. Alexander and Ann have a large number of descendants and they run the Tavern at Boydton in which they lived. Captain Robert Boyd married on 14 February 1724, Elizabeth Anderson, the daughter of James Anderson and Elizabeth Galt. This Robert died in 1766 and is buried in the Old Parish Church at Irvine. His tombstone is still there and has his wife and daughter Mary Wood is buried with him. However there is debate as to his date of birth. The gravestone says he was born in 1688, but some members of this family think he was actually born in 1699. So this debate will go on until further information is found to prove his birth. I have been told that Robert was Ship Master of Bettie of Irvine, while the above source calls the ship “Betty”, so I am not sure if this will make any difference in trying to search for the history of this ship in either the USA or the United Kingdom. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society PS This description of the route via Madeira, would suggest that Scots and Irish ship masters went south down the Irish Sea rather than going west from Ulster to meet the the Gulf Stream. So this may help to find “a migration route” from Scotland to America, where other ports in Europe may be import – such as Lisbon or some of the NW Ports in Spain.

Author: jkwilliams186 Surnames: Eccles Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/6250.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: First of all I would take a look at all the Eccles in Ayrshire in the 1841 Census using FreeCEN and get an idea of who is in what household (there are only about 50 Eccles). The main groupings are at farms and smallholdings near Ayr (Content, Corton, Burnton and Masonhill). There were three Eccles brothers: John, Alexander and Gilbert. From baptism records, Gilbert was born 28 January 1762 to Alexander Eccles and Marion McIlmorrow [OPR Colmonell]. They also had a daughter baptised Margaret in 1764. You need to look at wills and testaments to get the real detail. Neither John nor Alexander seems to have had surviving children and it appears they feued portions of property. John Eccles of Content died 6th Jan 1824 [SC6/44/1 Ayr Sheriff Court]. Alexander Eccles died in September 1842; he drew up a settlement on 3rd July 1833 and added a codicil on 27th October 1837 [1846 SC6/44/14 Ayr Sheriff Court]. These documents mention many Eccles nephews and nieces (and helpfully spouses of nieces). I will leave you to unravel these. Gilbert Eccles did not leave a will as far as I can see, but his youngest son Robert did [1867 SC6/46/5 Ayr Sheriff Court]. Happy hunting, Kay (Edinburgh). There was a West Ferry (also an East Ferry) in the Parish of Erskine, Renfrewshire. So I'm wondering if James (snr) the father of James (b.1841) just had a wee memory lapse? Perhaps it's James (snr) that was born in Ayrshire (his 1891 census says so). And there is this 1841 census that may be of interest. If James (jun) had been born 10 Feby 1841 you'd expect him to been on it (census date 6/7 June). So maybe February wrong and his birth month was later? Or even just missed off it for some reason. The wife of James (snr) is as Margaret though, not Maria - but she is as born England. The 1841 census has Mary (2) and the 1851 census of James & Maria has a Mary (11). James, as a railway worker, could've travelled all over the country (platelayer in 1871). Daur Mary as born Scotland in the English censuses. --- 1841 Census. 563. ED 4. p 4. Erskine, Renfrewshire.
