    3. Anyone who is loathe to pay, can go the tedious route. I began 30 years ago, sitting at a table in the George Peabody Library in Baltimore, Maryland, with pencil and paper, reading through nearly 100 volumes of extracts of marriages, baptisms, and testaments published by the Scottish Record Society. Today, at least you can sit in the comfort of your home and find many of those volumes in .pdf form at Google Books and perhaps elsewhere online. Like many of my fellow Scottish genealogists, I tremendously appreciate scotlandspeople.gov.uk, and I do not see that there would be any justice in having taxpayer dollars fund my genealogical pursuits. It's only right that the people using the service pay for them. Loretta (Lynn) Layman

Quite by accident this past week I happened across a web page for the South Ayrshire History Fair scheduled for June 1 at Troon. As their page describes, Professor Dauvit Brown of Glasgow University is going to speak on new information regarding William Wallace, and provide details of an unknown letter by Robert the Bruce he found in the British Library just before Christmas. I have just sent a message to a Jean Inness at South Ayrshire government asking if any details will be provided after the conference for those of us unable to attend might be allowed access to. 3. How soon we forget! Genealogy research has never been free. Before Scotlandspeoples site, the only way to get your data, without being in Scotland, was to go to an LDS Family History Library and sit at a microfiche or microfilm reader for hours looking at photocopied records. It cost three dollars to have a microfilm brought in, and three hours to read it. Ayrshire records required three films for each years births, three for deaths, and three for marriages. I read all the years from 1855 - 1875, plus a few others as available. You do the math, that is $540.00 dollars, plus 540 hours of reading, plus your driving time to get there. And let us not forget the hours spent reading microfiche copies of the OPR's. I for one was thrilled when Scotlandspeoples website was made available. I was able to search my names of interest from the comfort of my own home at much less expenditure of time, and considerably less money. I have baulked at the cost of Amazon.com, but have found records there I would never have uncovered on my own. My parents emigrated to Canada in 1923 when they were still single, and I had all that data. I knew they had gone back to Scotland for a visit before their marriage, but had no dates. Imagine my pleasure, and surprise, to find the records of not only that trip, but of an earlier one my father made of which I was not aware. So the point is, family history research is a great hobby with much pleasure derived for not only you, but all your extended family. But it is not, and has never been free of cost. George M. 3. Hi I know it must be disappointing to see details of local history conferences which one would love to attend but it's not realistic to hope for details from such meetings. Some of the speakers attend other conferences and meetings where they give more or less the same talk ...possibly slanting it for that particular audience. To make a recording or a transcription would render that talk unusable in the future. Having said that, some talks on family history topics have been recorded. The National Archives at Kew have a lot of recordings on their website http://media.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php/category/audio/ Irene South Ayrshire History Fair scheduled for June 1 at Troon. I think that the Earl of Argyllshire was involved with the Covenanter, so I would expect that many of the families that did migrate in the 1600’s to Kintyre could have been covenanters. There was further colonization of Southend in 1669. For some reason The Earl of Argyll in 1685 rebelled against James II of England which led to the Atholl raids. So if any of your “families” have disappeared from Ayrshire in any of these dates, you may need to look at southern Argyllshire for your family before they may have moved to Ireland in about 1685. From 1646, some of these lands was taken up by big Lowland tacksmen or lessees, so the records might be under their names or the Earl of Argyll’s. 3. I am researching Gilbert McHutcheon, I think born in Ayrshire, in 1700s. The following is the information I have on him, so I desperately need some advice or help: 1. Came to the Isle of Man from the Luce Bay area. He sailed from there or he was originally from there. 2. He married Catherine Dawson in 1779 in the parish of Patrick, Isle of Man. 3. They had four children: George in 1782, Catherine in 1784, John in 1792, and Margaret in 1794. These are baptism dates. 4. He died in 1796 in Peel, Isle of Man. 5. I have a copy of his will where he only mentions and names his widow and his children. No mention of family elsewhere. There are a number of Gilbert McHutcheons born around the same time in Barr by Girvan, Kirkoswald, Dalmellington, and Dailly. Can anybody claim any of them so I can thin down my list and maybe find out where my Gilbert McHutcheon came from. Another possibility is Wigtown in Dumfries and Galloway. Marny

    1. [AYR] Tarbolton Ramsay Relatives (Tarbolton, Ayershire)

John Ramsay was a joiner by trade originally from Tarbolton, Ayershire while his wife Agnes came from East Kilbride. I believe John had a brother Hugh who came to Canada but returned to Scotland. John and Agnes settled in southwestern Manitoba, naming the district Tarbolton though the nearest post office was Bradwardine. I`m interested in corresponding with anyone who may be a relative in Scotland and Australia as well. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
