Hello List, I am rather puzzled as I was sure that the freecen site had the 1851 Census for Auchinleck but now I come to check just for one entry I can't find it. I know the Auchinleck 1841 is missing and I was doing some voluntary transcribing myself (for another area) when the 1851 appeared. Please does anyone know where it has gone? I haven't really been following the debate about free versus paid for genealogy but there is certainly information available which has been produced by volunteers, including, as far as I knew, Auchinleck 1851. Thanks for any clues. Best regards, Mary
Mary - I am sure you will find that Auchinleck for 1851 is in the database, although for some reason you cannot select Auchinleck 1851. You can, however, search for the individual (putting in the age or occupation helps). I just tried it for one of mine in Dundonald (which also isn't listed for 1851). I put in his name and age and merely selected Ayrshire as the County. It found him all right! The FreeCen website says that 100% of Ayrshire is on line for 1841 and for 1851. It is just the Search feature that is at fault. Irene, Canada
Mary, Auchinleck isn't listed on the "census place", but Auchinleck is in there. I just put Templeton for 1851, and it listed all the T. in Ayrshire, including the ones in Auchinleck. Sticking with genealogy: for example, I'm partly of Danish descent and the Danish government has had a project to provide scans of all available church books and censuses online and freely available. I'm Australian born and the National Library of Australia has a massive digitization project of a vast array of publicly held documents and artefacts on the freely available Trove site; of particular use to family or social historians are scans of newspapers for example. The Australian War Museum is making freely available military records - at the moment those for most soldiers of the Great War and earlier are available, although even the indexes for later periods give very helpful summaries (for example dates and places of birth and next of kin). And so it goes - even for the UK there are many freely available public resources, although these can often only be accessed at local libraries (and why should libraries be free? Not everyone uses them!); for example: the Times and many local newspapers, census indexes and scans, the library edition of Ancestry and many others. These are the publicly owned and publicly funded resources. This is before you get onto the growing number of volunteer projects. The best known are of course FreeBDM and Freecen[sus], but there are also cemetery records and monument transcriptions. Transcriptions of all Lancashire church books are online and searchable (and this must be true for many other counties). I could go on! The fact that I oppose my tax dollars being used for certain things I find repugnant is exactly why I would not then ask that other people's tax dollars pay for an interest of mine which they may find foolish. Putting a message on any message board and hoping to find someone who has already researched your particular family tree is a real shot in the dark, but it can work. And there are still lots of free message boards. The reason a message about Scottish records will get a reply saying you need to use the pay to view website ScotlandsPeople is because that is how you access Scottish records. It actually works much cheaper than getting an English certificate. I can see my own family tree free of charge at any time, because I keep it on my own computer. What I put online is a copy. Deborah How far back to these records go for? Mike Boyd From: Deborah Rea Sent: Tuesday, March 19, 2013 10:34 AM To: Mike Boyd Subject: Re: [AYR] OSBORNE family from Kilmarnock Hi Mike, You/Nancy could email Heather Dunlop at the Burns Centre - [email protected] She is really helpful. I would like to let people know that they and other centres hold what is known as the Valuation Rolls. These came out every year and showed who the Proprietor/Tenant were on what farm. Also tells you the size of the farm. These are kept in a separate room at the Burns and so you will have to ask someone at the desk to get them out for you. You will not be able to copy them; the spines would break the copier. If you have an i-pad or i-phone you can take very quick photos of them. You will have to pay the photo fee per day - £5?? If one gets to Carnegie they might still make copies of the Val Rolls - their copier must be more heavy duty! Regards Debbie Rea
Nancy I assume that you plan to Fly form Boston to Edinburgh? How are you planning to go from Edinburgh to Kilmarnock? While in Kilmarnock, you will need to go to the Burns Memorial Centre. This is the Local Studied Library for East Ayrshire and "should" be able to tell you if they have records for the Churches, including maps of the graves, you want to visit in East Ayrshire. It is across the river from the Bus centre. I do not have their Email address but you should get it by goggling the East Ayrshire Council website. Irvine is in North Ayrshire and you will need to contact their Local Studies Centre, which I understand is now located in Stevenston (not sure what the parking is like there). I know they have records of graveyards but I can't recall if it is only up to the mid 1800's or not. So you will need to go to the North Ayrshire Council website to find their Email address to get their location. Ayr (town) is in South Ayrshire. Their Local Studies centre is in the Carniege (?) Library in the middle of Ayr and parking is a problem. Again you will have to look at the South Ayrshire Council website. Good hunting and have a good trip. Also we are lucky to be researching Scottish records - I've started researching my OH's family who are almost all in England, and for every stage you need to order the relevant certificate, at considerable cost (especially if you've come across the wrong person -and there's a high chance as all you can see online is the index).
