    3. No Mike most of Ayrshire is fine. Ayr has had a few snow flurries but none of it has stayed on the ground. It's been very cold though. Arran has been very bad. It's pretty to look at through my window but not so nice for the folk living there without any power. I looked up my great-great uncles will Andrew Murphy and he left a small amount to Martha Curlett and called her his cousin. That would fit OK with your Caroline born about 1844. Did not download it as there were NO other Caroline WHITES to be found. Then tried to find the Death of William WHITE born about 1842. There are TWO possibilities of all the 25 William WHITEs who died between 1881 and 1955. William WHITE aged 53 died Paisley 1896 and the other William WHITE was aged 61, he died 1904 Paisley. I suspect when Caroline died in 1884, the family was split up. Younger ones maybe put in an orphanage, or ALL of them put there. Older boys could have found work and maybe lived with the dad. There was a daughter Margaret born born 8 July, 1881 who might have been the 'twin' sister he came with if this was indeed a girl that was remembered. There was an infant [aged 0-1] who died 1878. In 1882, there were 2 deaths for Robert WHITEs, both under the age of 2, so they are doubtful. Checked each single year of deaths from 1881 thru 1900 and found no other candidates even being lenient with ages, we know he was born 1878. I'm thinking its more likely the twin, Robert died 1878 and if Alexander came to the US possibly with Margaret, she could have been presented as his twin ? Still seems she could have been presented as his sister, not his twin. However....if HE said he was born 1885, that would make HER born 1885 and that would have knocked 4 years off her real age. I'm seeing! more possibility for the AGE angle if she was wrongly said to be his TWIN. Am wondering about a census for William WHITE and maybe some older sons in the 1891 Census ? That family tree posted said Archibald and John were oldest. Jeanie was born 1868 and Agnes in 1872. 1. [AYR] Robert Bridges Born Ayrshire, Scotland; Died December 1921 Auburn, Washington
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: sgs14 Surnames: Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/14361/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Seattle Daily Times Friday, December 2, 1921 Robert Bridges Dead Once Active In Work Of Port Board Former President of Seattle Commission and Former State Land Official Dies Came To King County As Coal Miner In 1887 Could Neither Read Nor Write When He First Settled Here, but Became Close Student of Affairs Robert Bridges, 60 years old, former State Land Commissioner, former President of the Seattle Port Commission and nominee of the Farmer-Labor Party for Governor in the last state election died at 8:55 o'clock this morning at the Taylor-Lacey Hospital in Auburn. Mr. Bridges was taken to the hospital November 25 suffering from stomach trouble and a few days ago underwent a surgical operation. He is survived by a widow, six sons and a daughter - John, Robert, Thomas, James, Charles and Walter Bridges and Mrs. John Crumm. The body was removed to the Chittenden Undertaking Company's establishment at Kent, where funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. H.E. Woodley officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows' Cemetery in Kent. Mr. Bridges was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, his father being a coal miner. When 8 years old, Mr. Bridges entered the coal mines as a worker. In his reminiscences, he often told of how the coal miners strongly opposed legislation by the British Parliament to prohibit the employment of children and to reduce the hours of the men. The miners feared that Parliament was infringing on their private rights. Came to County in 1887 Mr. Bridges married early, coming to the United States with his bride when he was about 20 years old. He worked first in the coal mines of Iowa and Illinois and then came to King County, in 1887, obtaining employment in the Black Diamond mine of the Pacific Coast Coal Company. While in Iowa, he was thrown out of employment for a long time by a strike. When he settled in Black Diamond he could neither read nor write, but he set himself the task of mastering both with a determination that was characteristic of his whole career. For the rest of his life, he was one of the most omnivorous students of standard books in the state. Beside the Black Diamond mine, he worked in the Newcastle mine. When the strike of 1890 closed the mines Mr. Bridges moved to Seattle and remained here ten years, when he removed to Orillia, where he had two farms of more than 200 acres. While living in Seattle Mr. Bridges' first work was foreman of street building crews. Two years later he opened a small general store at the foot of Main Street on the waterfront. Selected as a member of the Fusion Convention in Ellensburg, in 1896, Mr. Bridges walked the entire distance from Seattle. The convention nominated him State Land Commissioner and he was elected, serving from January 1897 to January 1901. On his return to his home in Orillia Mr. Bridges formed a copartnership with George McFarlane and conducted a real estate and insurance business in Seattle up to the time of his last illness, under the firm name of McFarlane & Bridges. After successfully completing a drainage district in Orillia, Mr. Bridges next turned his attention to the problem of making an asset of the lower Duwamish River. He was active in the organization of the Duwamish Waterway Project and for a time managed the operations of that enterprise. The Port Commission idea for Seattle and King County at once attracted him and Mr. Bridges was elected the South District member on the first Board of Commissioners in 1911. Four Times President Mr. Bridge served on the Port Commission until late in the summer of 1919, when he resigned and returned to his home in Orillia. He was President of the Commission four times, succeeding the late General H.M. Chittenden in January 1915 and being reelected in 1916 and 1917 and again in 1919. From his retirement in 1919 until the summer of 1920 he lived quietly in Orillia and then he was nominated for Governor of the state by the Farmer-Labor Party. Following his defeat for Governor he again retired to his home in Orillia. All of Mr. Bridges seven children are married with the exception of Walter, who is a pupil in the Kent High School. Mrs. Maggie Crumm, the married daughter, is the only child living outside of King County. She is a resident of Auburn. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Some old Scottish estates became villages owing to the fact that estate owners hired people to live on and care for the property. Here's an article about the estate - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annick_Lodge_and_Greenville. Being that it's a Wikipedia article, you should try to verify the information by the references listed at the end of the article. However, there are also references to the estate of Annick Lodge at the website of the National Archives of Scotland. Go here - http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/ - and search for Annick Lodge. You may want to limit the search to exclude the period after your relatives would have lived there. A couple of the Archives extracts confirm that the estate was owned by the Montgomeries at least as early as 1801. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Twins, Robert and Alexander born 13 April, 1878 to William WHITE and Caroline WALLACE. I'd say the father did not remember the correct date for their marriage. Why he would report that it was Halloween [31 Oct] instead of in November, I'm not sure. Possibly the family tree posted earlier today is from a non-confirmed source. If ages were guessed from census data, actual birth years can be way off. if ALEXANDER is the one who lived and ended up in Canada, he could not have died as the tree shows. And it also doesn't show these 21878 births. 1878 is clearly written along the top of this document and 3 different places down the side of the page.
